Mother's Day Brunch
Ate at the Bar/Club and loved it. Sean took care of us; impeccable service. Portions are large so come hungry! We will return on our next visit to DC.
As usually, food is wonderful and the newly renovated Club Room is very nice as well as the service! Much better than in the main room where waiters are not that friendly!
This has to have been one of the most amazing food events we’ve ever had. From Sean the Bartender to Stelios, our amazingly attentive server, we could not ave asked for a better experience.
Our waiter was incredible. Provided a succinct yet thorough history of the restaurant and was completely attentive though without being intrusive. Perfect service...incredible meal. We sat at the same table where President Obama dined w/ Angela Merkel.
We went here for our anniversary dinner. The ambience was awesome. Really enjoyed the experience. The food was incredible. Our waiter was exemplary and we would highly recommend dinner here.
Joanna provided outstanding service! So friendly, helpful, attentive, and patient! The asparagus soup was a awesome start to the dinner, then the salmon and swordfish were both fabulous, and prepared perfectly. The s'mores dessert was as good as advertised.
Not as good as it used t be. Our appetizers were outstanding but main courses were lacking. My wife tenderloin came out at room temperature and her spinach tart was ice cold. All of it had to be redone. My duck breast was room temperature at best and other than the thin slices of duck hash sausage had very little taste. Not worth the nearly $400 for dinner and we expected to be wowed as we had been in the past. Our server, Amber was amazing and was the bright spot of the night.
Holiday gift certificate from parents
Everything about the restaurant was elevated. The service was impeccable, the food was delicious and their cocktails and wine list was impressive. My wife and I went here for our anniversary and it was the perfect evening.
Excellent service!!!! My swordfish was overcooked and they corrected the issue right away with a smile. They brought me a delish soup while i waited for my swordfish to be cooked just right. My husband loved his rack of pork. My scallops appetizer was very generous and fabulous. Could not have dessert because it would have been too much food. I was celebrating a birthday so I was given the menu rolled up with my name on it, a truffle and at the end of the meal everyone received very tasty petit fours.
We live in Old Town and it was nice to try 1789.
Service was horrendous. Waiter didn’t introduce himself, he just placed menus on the table and walked away. He never took the time to tell us about the menu. We saw him cater to other tables well, even going as far as telling the history about the place. We thought maybe since we were dressed a little casually and ordered beers as opposed to wine that he thought we would be a “cheap” table. He asked others about allergies and we still continued to be left to the side. At one point I tried engaging him and asking what his favorite desserts were. Once we had a chance to say what we wanted he left in the middle of us ordering so we only received one out of the two items we were trying to order. We’ve never had service as negligent as this and was surprised seeing as the ambiance is upscale and the prices were higher. When we are paying for good food we expect even better service. We wish we at least had mediocre service, but apparently that wasn’t available for us. Our other assistants / waitstaff for the evening was kind, but We will not be returning.
Marvelous dishes and lovely service. The noise level was such that we had a difficult time holding a conversation.
Once again the staff went out of their way to make the dinning experience wonderful.
We were seated in the annex (near the back bar), which was a huge disappointment. Lacks all of the charm of the main restaurant.
This is a hard review for me to write - it was a wonderful meal, but not up to their usual standards. In fact, it is one of the 3 best places I have even eaten, but not this time. My husband and I make a big effort to eat there on each trip to DC (we're from Texas) and normally each bite is an explosion of delight, so while it was good, perhaps very very good, it was not what we were expecting.
Food and service was excellent and there is great history in the restaurant. We enjoyed the tasting menu and it was delish...every course. Beef Tourenados and Anginote courses were our favorite. Bartender and service staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. Highly recommend.
Phenomenal experience- will be a regular stop whenever we are in town
The food, service, and atmosphere were phenomenal. Our waiter did a fantastic job helping decide what to order as well as keeping drinks refilled throughout the meal. For anyone in the area looking for a place to go for a special occasion, I would recommend that they come here. Despite a small hiccup that was handled very generously, I definitely will be returning to this wonderful restaurant.
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner and the opportunity for refined dining. Started with the scallop and himachi crudo and the swordfish salad, both excellent. Entrees were the pork rack, so moist and flavorful, and the grilled swordfish, also perfectly prepared and delicious. Service is outstanding and the foccaccia was perfect.
Because it is a very high-end opportunity for an extraordinary evening, the expectations are high. Three of our four meals were excellent and our appetizer was delicious. The service was very discreet and paced exactly right. Compared to some of the new restaurants at the wharf, I would say it did not have the wow a fact we were expecting. The quietness of the dining room however led to great conversation. We are not disappointed that we went. But we would not return. More lighting is needed in the stairwell going from upstairs to downstairs.
This is a 5 star exquisite restaurant whose service is incomparable. Tastes and preparation are outstanding. This restaurant is pricey although if you want a splurge for a special occasion this is the place to go. The lamb was exceptional as were the vegetables and desserts. This is fine dining at its best.
Superb ambiance and food. We enjoyed the 5-course tasting menu with wine accompaniment. Absolute perfection. Great, friendly, anticipatory service.
I have eaten at 1789 restaurant a few times over the years and it remains one of the best restaurants in Washington DC.. Good ambience. Excellent service. Varied and reasonable wine list. Main courses are almost always fantastic. The lamb never disappoints. Evolving culinary style without being too trendy.
It was our 1st anniversary and the waiter and hostess both welcomed us by saying "Happy Anniversary" - the food was amazing and the service was the best around. Will definitely be going back!
we enjoyed our dining expereince .gret friendly service.
The food was delicious, the rest was mediocre. We had to wait for 2.5 hrs for the main course. They did not bring us a wine list we had to ask for one. They did not inquire about refills for our drinks while waiting. We had to ask for bread. Although the setting is lovely and authentic, the service is very disappointing.
celebrating our college graduate - lovely intimate setting on the second floor. several small semi-private dining areas. delicious food, beautifully plated.
Went here for college graduation. Very pricey but well worth it for a rare special occasion. A must do if you spend any time in DC. The food is equisite, but not overly filling, and the service is top notch.
This is a lovely restaurant with delicious food and great service! Bob the bartender in the front bar is top notch and set the mood for a wonderful evening!! Thanks to all!
Graduated from Georgetown University and had dinner to celebrate with family. We had excellent service every step of the way. I loved our champagne, the gnocchi and clams, the duo of duck, and the Boston Cream dessert. The souvenir menu was a very nice touch. Thank you for the special experience!
One of the nicest restaurants and best service in the DC area. Waitstaff was fantastic.
Awesome! Wouldn’t change a thing!!
One of the best dining experiences EVER!
The ambiance at 1789 is more formal than most restaurants, which is a delightful respite from noise, people in casual clothes, and close tables. However, the service we received was less than attentive, and there was a drip from a vent that wasn't dealt with adequately. This is, too, a very expensive place, suitable for special occasions or business affairs.
Absolutely AMAZING! Loved this place. The only negative is that although our reservation specified "birthday" on our open table reservation, the restaurant failed to include an acknowledgment or birthday candle when we got dessert.
AMAZING! We came here last minute for mother's day and had passed it many times before. We had incredible FIVE Star service from our server Dane - he basically single-handedly made this one of the best dining experiences of our lives! The food was amazing and there were many options for all four of us who have different dietary restrictions. We were so happy and cannot wait to be back to request Dane again! Thank you for a great Mother's Day!
Over priced food with small portions.
Disappointed for Mother’s Day brunch.
Our appetizers were unique and wonderful.
Unfortunately our entrees (crab cake benedict’s) were
very mediocre (6 on a 10 scale) as the crab was very skimpy and soggy.
Ambiance was quiet and elegant as usual.
Haven’t been here for two years due to iffy menu before,
and it will be a few years before we return.
