The food was very good even though they did mess up my order, the waiter was apologetic and provided good service through out the night. The crowd here I would say is 50 plus. If you’re looking for great food and good service, food lighting this is the place to go. If you want to be around a younger crowd let’s say late 20’s to 40’s then this isn’t it. It wasn’t outrageously expensive either. Oh almost forgot. Make sure you tell them if it’s someone’s birthday and who’s birthday it is at time of reservation. They did something nice for my girlfriend.
Food was outstanding. Excellent tasting menu paired with wines. Food courses were generous as well as the wine pours---almost too generous! Service was unobtrusive if not a bit stiff. Unfortunately, we were seated in the first room to the left of the entrance. While it was certainly cozy and secluded, i felt as though i were in cave with the door shut---not my idea of romantic or intimate.
Absolute perfection. The room, the service, the food everything was beyond expectation and flawless in execution. The space was intimate for my dads 65th birthday celebration, the staff went above and beyond in the conduct of the dinner. I would easily visit with this staff and restaurant many times in the future.
First time in many years. Treated me as a regular. I have no idea what people expressing negative reviews were smoking. It was spectacular as always.
Chef Tracy has brought a new dimension to one of Washington's already great restaurants.
Thanks so much
Overall, quite happy, but the evening was spoiled from the get-go by the entrance hostess, who blatantly and openly lied in front of us regarding table seating and accommodations. Very weird! Why lie to customers when we see evidence of the truth right in front of us?!?! Not a class act by her part, and set a very bad tone for the evening. It’s a shame, because it’s a great restaurant, with exceptional food. But blatantly lying is not cool.
I have eaten at the '89 twice in the last month, good food and excellent service both times.
I recommend 1789 on EVERY level. The food, the staff, the ambiance made this the example of FINE DINING!
We’ve been here before with happy memories so when I wanted to make a small party for my husband on his 80th birthday it was my first choice of venue. I invited our two best couple friends and the 6 of us had a splendid time. Excellent wine choices, everything perfectly prepared, and the wait staff was always there but never intrusive. It was an evening we didn’t want to end. We’ll return for the next Celebration.
Went to 1789 with my girlfriend to celebrate a special event. I had heard good things and was excited about going. When we got there we were immediately seated in a very small room upstairs. There were only 3 parties seated in the room and you could clearly hear everyone’s conversation. We were seated right by the door to the stairs and were constantly interrupted by staff passing through the door. It was not a good experience. The food was good and the service was excellent but that could not overcome the poor setting.
First time in Bar and Club Room. Nothing outstanding outside check.
As usual, a fabulous and special experience. Food and service was impeccable.
We had a wonderful experience at 1789 last night, celebrating my wife's birthday. We were greeted with complementary valet parking and the host met us at the front door, holding it open to let us in. The dining room was busy, but the noise level was low. Everything we ordered was outstanding. My wife had the squash flower as a starter and I had the superb lamb sausage ratatouille, which was big enough for two. For entrees, she had the signature rack of lamb, while I enjoyed the salmon. Both were a delight. The service was equal to the quality of the food. Our server was delightful, always available to answer a question, but never hovering. If this wasn't enough, there were little extras: the spoonful of peach/almond gazpacho to whet out appetite, the truffle at the end, and the happy birthday menu rolled up for my wife to take home. All of this in a beautiful, romantic setting. We'll be back.
Best dining experience in years. Service (Tiffany) was attentive and professional without being intrusive. Food was perfectly prepared.
Great food and service! We went there before going to the Kennedy Center for a show. We both had the summer 3 course meal. Lovely place!
Wonderful food, amazing service! Will definitely come again.
We were in for our 10th Anniversary and they pulled out al the stops. The food was great, service impeccable and atmosphere perfect for an event like this. They even made special menus for us saying happy 100th anniversary which is above and beyond. Great place for out of towners to experience Georgetown and the DC dining scene.
A lovely restaurant set in a charming historic inn. The intimate setting of antique furniture and drawings transports the diner to another era. The menu is varied and boasts farm to table ingredients. The dishes are inventive and extremely tasty. A "must not miss" dining experience when visiting Georgetown and the surrounding areas.
Amazing experience here for a friend's birthday! Menu changes everyday and they customized the menu to say Happy Birthday
It is always outstanding. I always come here when I am in DC.
Had not been there in many years, but went because of their new chef. Tracy runs a great kitchen and the new menu had a lot of items to choose from. The review in the Post said the starters were nothing special, but I would argue that there were some updated choices with special interest. Our squash blossoms were tasty and beautifully plated. There was a surprise small bowl of fresh corn soup before our entrees. The breads were wonderful with the fresh butter. Our entrees of swordfish, tuna, and salmon were perfectly cooked and beautifully plated with sauces and creative vegetables. This is not an everyday restaurant choice, but for a special occasion I would put it back on the list. The prices are a bit too dear for regular dining.
Fantastic service and amazing food.
The tasting menu was excellent with the beef course as the star. Perfectly prepared foie gras on top of beef tenderloin with mushrooms and creamy smooth potatoes plus a truffle sauce..outstanding!
Superb food and service. Club room is intimate and quiet! A neighborhood gem.
Had a lovely time celebrating my birthday. Food was exquisite and the service was adequate. Received a personalized menu acknowledging the occasion, which was a unique gesture. Will definitely be returning.
Overall, dinner was fine, food was OK. No wow factor....nothing to write home about. Service was OUTSTANDING. Summary, enjoyed the evening, would I go back again? Probably not.
We very much enjoyed our anniversary dinner: extraordinary service, delicious food (the tuna, the swordfish, and the beef tenderloin were outstanding), and we weren't at all rushed despite someone arriving late (we were there 2.5 hours). Also some nice special touches such as the menu wishing us happy anniversary across the top and a hand-written congratulatory card. The complimentary valet parking was also much appreciated. 1789 is expensive, but we felt it was well worth it for a special occasion, and look forward to returning.
Celebrated an anniversary at 1789 last Friday night. The staff had “happy anniversary” printed on top of our menus and also gave us copies to keep. Such a special touch! The food was spectacular. Definitely a night to remember.
Restaurant week’s menu was delicious. Get the scallops.
Excellent food and atmosphere is wonderful.
Wine offerings were very good too.
Love to come back soon, but won't be in Washington for several months.
Fabulous evening. Food, cocktails, service, wine list absolutely outstanding!
It was our first time. 1789 struck just the right balance between friendly fun service and sophisticated fine dinning. We felt like we were in someone's really nice home who also was a great chief. Not inexpensive, but amazing food and service.
My favorite restaurant in DC. Impeccable staff and phenomenal food!
The service was incredibly good, our waiter checked on us as often as he could. The experience here felt as if we were important guests, which is nice comparatively to other places. 1789 restaurant also has incredible meals. Next time my girlfriend and I go to 1789 restaurant we'll be ordering the tasting menu for sure. Great place to dine!
Outstanding cuisine and service, as always. The pork tenderloin wrapped in bacon was incredibly tender and delicious! We always come here for special occasions and celebrations. Ask to be seated in the main dining room, near the fireplace. The people-watching is fabulous there.
Great service! Thanks for the experience!
A group of us enjoyed a couples date for restaurant week. Excellent menu, drink selection, and service. We were seated and served quickly. Our waiter was nice and patient. The only con was the portion size, which was small. Overall, I would highly recommend for a nice, bougie night on the town!
I gave the 4 star only for waiting too long. We had reservation but still had to have waited for more than 15 minutes for our already very late time reservation. Everyone of us starved.
Went for summer restaurant week. Wine options and dessert were excellent but appetizers and entree left something to be desired.
1789 was an awesome experience for Restaurant Week in DC. The food was delicious with top notch presentation. The tasting menu also has the option on wine pairings. The craft cocktails are very good as well. The staff is very friendly, attentive and familiar with the history of the establishment, to include presidents and other famous patrons. Definitely recommend everyone in DC dine here atleast once.
