Food was wonderful, as always! Gary did a great job orchestrating the dinner. The steak and lobster was of the highest quality. The escargot was probably the best I've ever had - not over seasoned and cooked perfectly.

What a classic! Al's is a great place for the special occasion especially if you like the old school approach. Table side service for the Caesar salad, mains and bananas Foster. It's not perfect, and it really should be for the price, but it's awfully darn good. I assume the post-COVID world has hit them with staffing so the numbers of servers is just enough to take care of things, but not as it was in the past when someone was there before you looked up to find someone, but it is adequate. The servers themselves - busser, server, head waiter (and husband of the owner) were all spectacular! Friendly, knowledgeable and appropriately chatty. They even brought out their Emmy Award to show us. We really enjoyed the food but I do have some comments: (Don't take these as negatives, but as critique. Overall we'll be back) The Caesar salad - presentation 5 stars. The salad itself was slightly overdressed - 4 stars. Our steaks - Perfect prime beef strip steaks. Mine was cooked to a perfect Med Rare, my wife's was maybe 1 minute too long. The tableside heat and presentation was 5 stars. I had it with lobster -cooked perfectly - and Oscar sauce - which could have been warmer. 4 stars on temp but 5 for taste. The bananas Foster - created tableside - was perfect. Best I've had since Brennan's in New Orleans. 5++ stars. In a better economic climate I'm sure Al's will be back up to perfection all around. For now, it's great, but not perfect - for the price. Definitely a place everyone should try.

We planned a girls trip to St. Louis months ago and we had researched steakhouses to celebrate all our November birthdays. Al’s was our choice and it was really an experience type restaurant. We did show up early and were a bit worried because it was hard to find and was definitely in a strange location. We were lucky to be seated 5 minutes after we arrived, but after hearing that they limit number of tables, we know that when we return we would just stick with our time on the reservation. There is not really a bar to sit and enjoy a drink, so don’t expect that. We were told the history of the restaurant and that was really neat and helped us to understand the ambience of the place. There is no physical menu… they bring out the cuts if meat and you choose that way. One of us had the lobster bisque and it was phenomenal. Steaks were unbelievable and we really enjoyed our meal. No prices on the menu, but it was not unlike nice steakhouse prices! We would return! Gary and James were so helpful and certainly enjoyed their service. They have a cute documentary you can Google about the restaurant. Note: it was hard to get an Uber as it’s off the beaten path, so expect a bit of a wait.

Al's RestaurantResponded on November 9, 2022Thank you for the outstanding rating and commentary. We very much appreciate your business and for choosing Al's for your birthday celebrations - we are honored. We hope to see you again on a future trip to St. Louis. Cheers & Happy Birthday!!!

Al's is past its prime. They need to adjust to St. Louis in 2022.

Al's RestaurantResponded on October 19, 2022Thanks for the outstanding 5 star food & service rating! As a restaurant that is a City of St. Louis Historical Landmark, we honor our past with classics like Filet or NY Strip Oscar, Lobster Thermidor, Tableside Caesars & Bananas Foster. True, not seen at many restaurants any more due to the prep & time needed for tableside, but it makes us unique from the many other fine, locally-owned restaurants in St. Louis. Good classics never go out of style. We appreciate your business & comments.

We arrived with such excitment, only to be greeted by an angry, rude waiter. The food is excellent, drinks just ok. We ordered a good bottle of wine. The waiter's assistant made the service tollerable, he at least tried to be pleasant. We have eaten at fine restaurants all over the world and have dealt with stuffy wait staff, but this was really awful. Maybe we caught him on a bad night.

Our favorite restaurant and it never disappoints. Steak Romano and Al’s pasta are to kill for. The escargot is to die for. Portions are large so the prices seem high but they aren’t really. New diners beware, there are no menus. You do not know how much anything costs. If you have to ask you shouldn’t go. I’ve been going to Al’s since 1976 and there’s a reason for that. Al’s is the best!

As someone who has never dined in a restaurant of this prestige before, I felt a little out of place at first. Then our server came over and we were immediately like “phew”, she made us feel so comfortable and answered all our silly questions. The whole experience was incredible but my favorite part was when the manager (??) came to our table after our main course and told us the story about Al’s and it’s history. We were mesmerized; the whole atmosphere has this vibe (I don’t know any way other to describe it) that is so infatuating. The food was… there are no words that are appropriate for a review to describe how good it was. But the service??? The service was absolutely out of this world and we will never be able to thank Al’s for serving us and staying open past closing time just so we could still get dessert and hang out. 10000000/10 stars. If you’re in STL, you HAVE to go.

Hands Down the best historical dining experience you will have in St Louis and very possibly your life! This gem will take you back in time with its old school style service, rustic dining setting and some of the best table side service once could ever ask for. And the food…well it will leave you with out words! Escargot, Filet Oscar, Al’s Pasta, Twice Baked Potato are my personal faves but the lobster Thermidor was remarkable as well! Enjoy!!

Terrible service and experience, the restaurant operates with a skeleton crew of 2 people and looks/feels like it is closed due to no cars, no people, and not many lights on. Showed up 45 min before reservation thinking we would sit at the bar and have a drink, bar was closed. The host/waiter seemed annoyed we had showed up early, did not make us feel welcome, and should have trusted our gut and left, but the place has clearly fallen on hard times, so wanted to follow through with our patronage. He said he could seat us but we would have to wait till he could get to us. Surveying the dining room of a 4 top and a 2 top we said sure as we were not in a hurry. Our drink order and drinks were timely, but we nearly finished the bottle of wine we ordered "with dinner" before the waiter told us the apps (no menus, no pricing) MORE THAN AN HR after we sat down. I mentioned to him wanting to order apps as we have almost finished the bottle of wine and had no food, and his response was a bit rude "you were early so that is what you get". We both ordered cocktail shrimp. Picked up first shrimp and it was warm, like it had just been cooked. Plate was chilled, checked out other shrimp which were less warm, but not cold, def not chilled. Even though the shrimps were warm on the outside, they were not fully cooked on the inside. We immediately put down the food and asked for the check. After spending close to 2 hours in the restaurant and spending over $300 on wine and shrimp we didn't eat, we left without eating dinner so that we could find a restaurant that was capable of serving us within the next hours as it was 9pm and we were hungry. The restaurant also marked our reservation likely to deter from leaving a bad review. I am sure this place was "the place" back in the day, but it has not kept with current times in terms of service level and quality of food. Strongly do not recommend.

In helping a friend celebrate her 70th birthday, Al's proved to be the perfect gift. I could have made a meal on the special appetizer -- consisting of a bit of barbecue, shrimp and toasted ravioli -- but room had to be left for the cold, crisp salad, perfectly done and savory filet, zesty Al's potatoes and asparagus with a rich, creamy hollandaise sauce to die for. Cream cheese butter was an added treat for the fresh bread and all topped by a most pleasant margaux and French vanilla ice cream for dessert. The waiter was, for the most part, excellent. The only negative was that a promised sorbet before the main course failed to appear because of a flop in the kitchen. My friend, who had an equally wonderful steak/lobster combo over asparagus, said it made for a truly memorable birthday. Of course, this had better be a special occasion. With wine and 20 percent tip, the bill came out to just north of $500. (The only questionable practice is that menus are given orally at the table and prices are never mentioned -- unless you ask. I suppose it's like the old maxim -- if you have to ask, you can't afford it.) But it was a truly pleasant and memorable experience. We were told it was a favorite place of Sinatra and we sat at Michael Landon's table although they don't do anything so gauche as hang pictures of the countless celebs who have eaten there.

Al’s still delivers a fine dining experience. Our meal was perfection. From the escargot, to the perfectly cooked fillet and the amazing twice baked potato like you haven’t experienced in years. My husband and I both ordered the filet Oscar for our entrees- the obvious choice!! Gary and James offered truly top notch service and made the entire experience a fantastic one. My husband and I have both traveled extensively and eaten at many fine dining establishments around the world and Al’s rates at the top of the list. We love this St. Louis institution. Our dinner at Al’s was star-studded from start to finish. We sat at the sweetest corner table - The Sinatra Table. Frank actually ate at this table and there are autographed photos of Ole Blue Eyes on the wall. During COVID-19 the place was a bit empty, but the owners husband waited on us and mixed our cocktails. He gave us the history of the restaurant. Memorabile evening in St. Louis!

The ambiance and history of Al's is amazing and is the main attraction making it worth the trip into an otherwise abandoned area of St Louis City. Instead of menus, the server describes the meats with preparation options and ala carte sides. No prices are mentioned although they do ask up front who is paying the bill which is odd. Expect $100+ per person for a full meal. Servers are very attentive refilling water and wine, but not iced tea, and very slow to bring additional bread we requested. Plates are assembled tableside for presentation. Unfortunately, when serving much difficulty was had serving dishes to the correct person. We ordered filets of various sizes and temperatures. The first gentleman served cut right in and shared bites with others waiting for their meals. Only after other dishes were finally served was it obvious the wrong steak had been served to him initially. This resulting in leaving only half a filet for the person it should have gone to originally (offer was made to share however was too raw for his tastes). The $19 side of asparagus consisted of 6 bland stalks, the carrots were a better value but were still raw, the potatoes were okay, one side dish was missing. The next day, it was discovered a lobster (which we had not ordered nor received) had been added to our bill. My initial call went unreturned however they called my husband back immediately. While they did eventually credit us, it was only after they argued a need to review security footage to be sure it wasn't delivered to our table.
