Host - the heavy set one - ruined entire experience (mix of stand-up comedian and self appointed army general). He lied about window tables being reserved as we noticed people being moved there from a different table by a waitress. He failed to check us in for Open Table - we asked 3 times - it took a call hours later for him to do so. The food was average. They were accommodating and changed the cheese sandwich to a Swiss sandwich, but it came out dry and without tomato slice as billed. Service was OK. We were staying at the Ritz across the street and decided to check this Hilton Cafe for lunch and wanted to be pleasantly surprised. We were surprised. Hilton can do better. Until then we do not recommend.
The service is terrible. The Maitre D' did not even care when we complained about it!
I will never go back.
Quick meal before attending Graduation at DAR. Very accommodating for a large group, easy to hear conversation and the staff was very good getting us out in time.
The taco was a bit stale, burger was great !!
Too many people not enough waitresses service was slow food was cold unacceptable
Catch up cousins lunch was a success. Service was good, food was nicely done (we all had a variety of salmon salad) and we weren't rushed. I'd read some reviews that were negative on the food but I thought the salads were well prepared, very fresh and portion size just right.
The service was dreadful. 10 minutes to get ketchup for a burger that ended up being cold by the time the ketchup arrived. 10 more minutes to get a check. One server for an entire room with 40 patrons. Babies screaming, another party of 20 people. Food was decent, but everything else was dreadful. None of this was the servers fault. No sign of a manager The entire evening. Wow!
Maybe not the most creative or trendy location - but that's ok! Prices were reasonable, food was tasty, lots natural light for our early dinner & a great location a for pre-NSO (at Kennedy Center) concert dinner. My only complaint would be the slow waiter. He was really nice but we had to wait a very long time to get our check. I'm sure we'll be back.
First time here on recommendation of concierge at the Fairmont! Service, food ambiance are great! Will be back in the fall when we move our son back to school.
The location suited our get together. The food and drink were fine.
Country sandwich good.
Wouldn’t recommended Croque Madame—too soggy.
Service less than desirable.
Orders taken and food delivered quickly.
Took 20 mins and me standing up from table and going to bar to initiate receipt of check. Had not seen waiter and was ignored by other wait staff in area.
The food was tasty but I have a food allergy that the tried to accommodate but kept goofing up. I would recommend highly as my friends loved their food,
Wednesdays are half price burgers, which are served with fries. They are pretty standard, but for $8 that's a bargain at a nice restaurant in DC. However I requested an outdoor table a week ago when I made a reservation online. Upon calling the restaurant today to confirm -- and to reiterate my request for an outdoor table -- I was told these are "first come first served". I don't think an elegant restaurant which takes reservations should exclude outdoor seating area from their reservations system. This was the only reason I booked here, so to be told at the last minute this was not guaranteed was an unpleasant surprise. The restaurant should change it's policy on this. Otherwise, overall it was a good experience.
My husband's pot pie tasted sour so he sent it back. They brought him brought him a beet salad as per his request.
Service was not good, took a long time to get water and the order taken. Waiter was spending a lot of time with 3 young women he knew who seemed to be regulars to the detriment of not only looking after us but also other customers were getting very frustrated with the lack of service.
Meal came out in a reasonable time but when will Restaurants serve decent meat with a steak frites? Mine was cooked as I like it but was as tough as old boots.
2 of our meals were either under cooked (chicken) or contained food that was obviously old (brown avocado spread, sliced turkey that was stiff and tangy). I won't go back to this location.
Simply the worst service imaginable falling squarely on poor management. Our actual server was a delight but a misfired order, wrong appetizer, and poorly timed entrees were a symphony of chaos broken up by four separate waitstaff or managerial staff asking if we ordered dish X or Y while holding hot plate in hand! What is going on? After numerous screw ups no apology or comp on the appetizer? A waiter combined two tables behind my guest, enlarging the seating area, then later asked that my guest move his seat to another part of the table (mid conversation) because he was “blocking the aisle access” that would have otherwise been open. Unacceptable.
A great location by the hotels a short walk away. The staff was friendly and were accommodating concerning my coming in with a handicapped scooter. The food was delicious and arrived hot. I had a pasta with chicken dish with some veg in an Alfredo sauce. My husband had a meatloaf dish. Price without an appetizer was good.
Really disappointing brunch. The place was very quiet and felt somewhat depressing. They stuck us at a table behind a wall, despite the whole restaurant being empty. Food was super bland and boring. Very strange that this large restaurant doesn't even have a bathroom -- you have to walk into the lobby of the attached hotel and then go down a level. I'd estimate this restaurant seats at least 100 people, so I don't understand why they can't have at least a single bathroom in the facility. Just a very odd place with a weird vibe, definitely would not recommend (at least for brunch). Maybe it's different at dinner, but brunch felt like a total bust.
I was there for a little three day stay and I stayed at the hotel. I have lunch one day and then my last night there I called to get a table but it was going to be a wait and there was a spot at the bar which I didn't mind sitting at. Had the best cheeseburger.
The day before I had the best roasted tomato soup
I've been to Cafe Deluxe many times. It's a great place for brunch. Comfort food. Not gourmet but we were pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed the tomato soup & grilled cheese and my husband really liked his steak sandwich. It is a larger space so easy to get last minute reservations.
Nice server but not a good one. Food was adequate.
A neighborhood choice. This time for a birthday celebration. Lovely atmosphere and excellent food-crab cakes were delish! Service was helpful, pleasant and non intrusive. And they remembered to add a candle. Have eaten here for breakfast, brunch also. Always a positive experience. Prices are reasonable.
Not enough staff to handle the lunch rush.
Comfortable, predictably good with quality food and responsive service...
Had a great experience the night before. This time we were apparently seated in no man's land between a full room and a newly opened room, and we were ignored for 30 minutes. Finally a passing server had mercy on us and took our order.
The quality of food is solid, they just didn't handle the crowd properly.
Casual spot good for the family. Sandwiches, salads, simple entrees, kids menu.
Seating was quick. Server was attentive and friendly. Food was delicious! My picky 3 year old actually ate everything we ordered for him! That’s a first! Great experience.
The starter, a delicious tomato soup, was perfect. The steak frites beautifully prepared and just right. The Malbec rounded it off. Service was excellent. The manager came by a couple of times to check on me.
Two days later I decided to go back to try their shrimp and grits and have another round of the tomato soup. I’m glad I did. The restaurant is open all day. I highly recommend it. Reservations are helpful.
So good - the chicken sandwich is my favorite!
We ate breakfast on Easter at Cafe Deluxe and were very happy with the food and service. I highly recommend the corn flake encrusted french toast! Their cappuccino was awesome as well!
The food is always solid, have never had a bad meal at any Cafe Deluxe. The service was slow, but the servers were friendly and professional.
I have had breakfast here many times and have eaten many a burger. I made the mistake of ordering steak frites. I asked for medium rare and it came back well done. Sent it back and waited and waited. The replacement steak was cooked about right, but was tough and pretty tasteless. My companion, who stuck with tuna tacos--also a reliable choice, observed that this is a comfort food place. Should have tried the meatloaf, but in future I will stick with burgers or breakfast.
Another excellent meal at Cafe Deluxe. Every time I eat here they never fail to impress. Food, service and value are all excellent
The Cobb salad was excellent and the ahi tacos were wonderful.
Excellent blueberry pancakes, bacon and eggs and wonderful coffee! Clean, bright, and just what you want for breakfast in the morning! Went three times in one week! Dont miss the beignets! As good as New Orleans! Los, bagel and capers a hit! Wonderful and friendly maitre'd! Great portions!
My family ate there every morning while visiting DC. Victor waited on us and he was fantastic and helpful. The brunch food was great. We ate there once for dinner and the food was wonderful. 5 stars!
Good food, always reliable at this location and in Cleveland Park. Cafe Deluxe is one of my family's "go to" places!
The host refused to change table when there were many tables available, claim that he had to be fair with servers and I had to be seated a table with traffic in front of server's station and kitchen door.
From there, unfortunately, I was not comfortable, didn't liked the sangria and my Salmon Burger was not satisfying. Sorry to give this bad review but HOST should know better.
Café Deluxe is a great value. The food is consistently good (my salmon burger was terrific) as is the service. The restaurant is what I call upscale casual, with comfortable ambiance and the ability to easily converse with tablemates.
