Chaplin's asset is the large outdoor patio space, particularly under the current circumstances. We had not been to Chaplin for quite some time and intended to revisit. While the happy hour is generous, and may be sufficient in itself for another visit of drinks only, the food is simply not worth ordering. Neither of us finished our entrees, and it is hard to imagine that the "chef" or proprietors would assume that such level of quality would pass even in a fast casual restaurant model let alone a restaurant attempting to capture a more chic niche and crowd. Also, the property is showing some significant wear and tear, which needs to be addressed.
This place had good reviews so I wanted to see it for myself. We came for lunch and had made reservations on Open Table but it wasn't really necessary as there were a good amount of tables available. Most people stay outside but we chose to sit inside. The theme is kind of weird and didn't make any sense but so does many restaurants.
We ordered shrimp dumplings, vegetarian ramen, miso ramen with pork, mojito and Kirin Ichiban beer. Our food and drinks were delicious. The size of my mojito and the deliciousness was worth the $14 for the drink.
Our sever disappeared on us and then the owner's brother took care of us at the end but overall service was good as well.
The bathroom was disgusting but I think it was under construction and looked to be the only single restroom for all customers. If you zoom in the wall paper is peeling on the Chaplin mural.
I'm giving this place a 4 star because it didn't really wow me.
I was not impressed with the food or the drinks. It is not a place that I would visit again.
Great ramen!! Enjoyed the food and drinks. Late hours are a plus as well.
Menu was not as advertised— also, duck and lamb roast orders require a one week notice… no where was that stated on the reservations.
Food was good! Loved that we could pick outdoor seating for our reservation
Loved the patio and drinks. Service was meh.
Best ramen in the city and an awesome happy hour.
Great food fun casual place with and old school meets new school vibe.
I have been to Chaplin’s several times and loved it, but they were off their game this night. Our reservation was at 8:30pm, so the restaurant was starting to clear out by then, but it still took us almost an hour just to get our drinks. We ordered two appetizers that never showed, and when we asked for an ETA, the waiter told us the kitchen was still working on them. Our ramen made it out about an hour after we ordered, and they were delicious, although missing the spicy sauce we ordered. We asked again about the appetizers, at which point the waiter confessed that they had not yet been started. Luckily, the new GM stopped by our table and apologized for the poor service and comped part of our meal. Giving 3 stars for the food that we did receive and for the manager that stepped in to help improve the service - otherwise, we likely would not be coming back.
It was amazing! The food was really great, unique and really rasty!
Appetizers were good. The ribs fantastic. Appetizers came quick but server forgot to place ramen order so we were waiting for probably an extra 50 min. Ramen was ok.
The food is delicious here. I had shrimp and chicken shumai. I tried some of my friend’s Japanese fried chicken. They were both great. I also had a good Manhattan. Drinks are half off if you can make it before 6 pm!
Excellent food and service! Great outdoor seating!
Please fix the AC.
The food was decent for the price, but the restaurant itself was loud and humid on the interior. When we brought it up with the server, he was indifferent and told us we just had to deal with it. The drinks were super sweet, but we didn’t want to deal with the server again. No one really checked up on us until we had to flag down a busboy for our check. I would consider getting take out from here - because again, the food was decent for the price. However, I likely would never dine in again.
Excellent food and drink. Just a bit too loud.
One of my favorite restaurants in DC for years and it never disappoints. Excellent food, drinks, service, and ambiance. It’s the first place I bring friends from out of town!! Try the tori karaage, thank me later.
Shoyu with Tori Karaage added--really good. Savory, rich broth, and the karate was perfect.
Less impressed with the drink menu, which is overwhelmingly bitter in its palette--be nice to have some sweeter alternatives.
Dark, and deafening loud.
Amazing service, as always.
The outdoor patio seating was perfect - shaded, not too crowded, not exposed to too much traffic. The food was good - particularly the drunken master dumplings! The drinks were interesting and delicious.
The server was polite, if over-worked. However, the wait for after dinner drinks and dessert was unacceptable. The waitress was very apologetic and comp'd us the dessert - after a 30 minute wait that overstayed our parking meter.
That colored our otherwise fine experience. We loved the ambience and will likely return, and hopefully the strain of service Covid will have settled.
They didn’t have what I wanted to order. Unfortunate.
Love Chaplins..haven’t been since Covid began but the food is just as delicious. Unfortunately the service wasn’t the same. Usually Chaplins is a prompt experience..but for some reason it took us 1 hour just to get appetizers and by the time it arrived we were eating it with our ramen. I heard another table nearby cancel their order because of the wait. Maybe it was just a one off night..I’ll try again. Hopefully it’ll be better because I really love this place.
We enjoy the ambiance and offerings at this restaurant. Tan Tan men with Chicken is very good, but the quality of the chicken itself could be better. The vegetarian ramen could be more flavorful as well. Customer service is good.
Food was great! Music was waaaayyyyy to loud upstairs- other than that- it’s great!
Great food and portions, cocktails were great. Would highly suggest making a reservation. Also their happy hour is a plus. Half off most beverages
My friends and I love this place for the awesome menu and the amazing drinks. The service and bartenders are fantastic and the kitchen is usually very quick with the orders. This place has been a staple for birthdays, special occasions and everything in between since they opened. We love Chaplin and will come back often.
Reservations are recommended on the weekends for sure, but you can still snag a table on a random weeknight with no problem.
Great food, with a special twist. Nothing boring there.
The food was delicious. However, we are still in a pandemic and I'm sure everyone in the building without a mask on was not vaccinated. We were all sitting a little too close for my comfort. I would recommend getting your food to go, if Covid is still a concern for you.
Always love Chaplin! It is my go-to place for Ramen!
I really like this place. Creative drinks, good food and great service ensure you are going to have a great time.
The food was phenomenal, but the restaurant was very loud, hot, and crowded.
It’s a great place always consisten
I’ve been coming here for years they’re the best place in the city. The staff & management is always nice & pleasant when I come with my family. If you looking for noodles Chaplin’s is the number #1 place to go to.
Great ramen, a little loud
Great Tonkotsu ramen, good drinks, but service was mediocre. Asked the hostess who was cleaning our table for another one with the umbrella since it was raining a little bit and she said she can't since it was a little windy. 15-20 minutes later she seats another couple at the table and opens an umbrella for them. Hmmm. Server didn't seem enthusiastic one bit but understandably we heard the GM yelling at her and another server about coverage.
My mom was in town so I took her out to dinner and to try ramen for the first time.
The food amd drinks are always great. This is one of my favorite places. So happy things are open again.
Overall, we had a great experience at Chaplans. The wait staff were great, the food was delicious, and the drinks were good.
There was a table of super loud drunk young people. They ruined the ambience for the rest of us. Too bad they can’t hold their liquor!
