Northern Mexican
Bernal Heights
About the restaurant
Chicáno Nuevo is the culmination of years spent cooking, serving, dreaming, and building by Abraham Nuñez and Courtney Fujita. Abraham’s cooking is inspired by his Baja and Tijuana roots, fine dining experience, and love of seafood, while Courtney’s background in hospitality and beverage helps shape the warm, lively atmosphere of the dining room.

Our prix fixe menu (currently $95 plus tax and gratuity) features raw and cooked seafood, with dishes designed to be shared through conversation, music, and a relaxed evening together.

At this time, we are a two-person team preparing the entire experience ourselves and unfortunately cannot accommodate dietary restrictions, allergies, or substitutions.

We offer a small selection of non-alcoholic options and encourage guests to explore the wonderful bars and nightlife in our neighborhood before or after dinner.

Consuming raw or undercooked seafood, shellfish, eggs, or meat may increase your risk of foodborne illness.

The latest version of Chicano Nuevo is symphony of Mexican flavors delivered as sophisticated "street food". We had seven courses, all fantastic, which build on each other. It starts with chips and guacamole, a rich crunch and creamy combo. That was followed by kumamoto oysters from Baja with zingy mignonette. Then a rich and sweet corn cake balanced with butter and caviar. Next was a beautiful hamachi tostada, elegantly designed so it was almost as nice to look at as eat. It's a feast of tastes and textures, and surprisingly easy to eat with ones fingers. Then Abraham's main event, his fish taco. It's been years since we had one and it was worth the wait! Finally, a tamale with beef tongue and squid ink. We also enjoyed the flan, though by that time, were were happily stuffed!

We felt like we stumbled on a secret spot! Delicious food, beautiful setting, great service. Would highly recommend. The amaro flight is delightful, all our cocktails were also great. The gnocchi stood out! Definitely try the after dinner espresso drink.

Don't let the quiet, quasi-suburban neighborhood fool you; this place is a true gem! We had a delicious, reasonably-priced omakase and it was delightful. All of the fish was fresh with unique preparations. We loved that they gave us multiple options to add more food beyond the basic - which we did not need. Service is very friendly, and of course there's a very good menu of sake and wines. Ambience is placid but not chilly; a great place to actually talk to your date in a calm setting.

The food was absolutely delicious and fish was so fresh! The waiter was very friendly and attentive, making sure our water and tea were always filled. Glad we made a reservation because there’s limited seating and it can get full. Will definitely eat here again!

About the restaurant
We serve food that, more often than not, accesses that part of our deepest soul where genuine expression can flow forth. We have always tried to give our food and service our best selves, as honest and vulnerable as we can muster. We strive to be a place where you might actually have a real connection; maybe with your server, maybe with your food or maybe with your possibly gracious host who is ACTUALLY glad you’re there.

Oh, you wanted a restaurant description? Sorry. Can’t really help you there. We’re not so big on labels. Our food is hard to nail down as we are constantly evolving and entirely seasonal and personal. We’ve used “Food you eat” as a tag line on occasion and that remains accurate. We could also describe it as “Food we really want you to eat”. When you’re here, tell us what you would call it.

Our restaurant focuses on authentic alpine cuisine, thoughtfully sourced and lovingly served in a setting inspired by the mountain "Stüblis" of the Alps. The menu is anchored by the Swiss classics of Fondue and Raclette - but features other typical fare highlighting various alpine regions.

It is a fun and unique dining experience but than more than that, the food is really really good and the service is excellent. If you don’t think you’re into fondue, which would be crazy, there are other options.

Extraordinary! One of the finest meals we have had in years. What a find! Elegant food, unpretentious, surprising twists. The Sommelier really knew her stuff. The Head Waiter was so attentive and calm. Exquisite to look at and even more delicious to eat. Wish we lived on the West Coast!
