Engawa was extremely expensive and also an absolute bargain. The sashimi was a showpiece. It came in a wooden tray with fifteen compartments, and in each compartment was a unique and beautiful pottery dish containing an exquisite morsel of something utterly delicious. It was one of the most wonderful things I've ever seen (and tasted) in a restaurant.. until the Kobe beef turned up. Once again, this was gorgeously presented, and the meat was off-the-charts sensational. I'd never tasted Kobe beef before, and all I can say is: believe the hype. I've never, ever encountered such tender, succulent, juicy and deeply flavoured beef. It was quite simply the steak of a lifetime.

Service was unfailingly friendly and nicely paced but, be warned, Engawa's dining area is narrow and properly tiny, so you may struggle to get a table (or even a stool at the bar) where you are not jostled by other diners. But any minor discomfort is utterly outweighed by the gastonomic delight on offer. It's certainly some of the best - possibly THE best - Japanese food in London. Very warmly recommended indeed.

The foods were good but would expect that for the price I paid. Hot sake and miso soup were serviced just about warm .. I had to ask the sake to be warmed again.
they use huge bowls and plates to look nice but the table is tiny and cheap. The bench and chairs were cheap and uncomfortable. We were squeezed at the corner. Between the each table is so tight. The ambiance was poor and don’t expect that in expensive restaurants.
We were also right by the sliding door which leads to bins where waiters go in and out constantly to get rid of leftover foods.
I booked a table for a very special occasion but unfortunately I will not do that again.
We were only ok because the foods were quite good.
Please improve customers comfort and atmosphere rather than just jam pack as many customers as possible in a small space to optimise the profit.

Service was off, I asked which cut the wagyu beef was she said “it’s waygu” I said yes but is it a rib eye, sirloin, etc, she said let me check then returned to tell me it was “waygu”!

Waygu is the Japanese cow, I want to know which cut of the cow I’m paying for. Training is needed!

Overall service was not attentive, food was average.

Great restaurant that captures the traditional Japanese food culture brilliantly. The food was beyond excellent, my only hesitance was the price which doesn't quite justify itself.

Had our first omakase experience for my husband’s birthday and loved it! The sashimi was fresh and the wagyu beef is as we remembered in Japan. The service was good and the waiter had good humour, thank you! :))

(Mostly) pre-prepared "omakase" - nonsense in my view... Plastic cutting boards etc. Not good.

The ambience and service and decor were great. The food was good but WAY too sugary so not traditionally Japanese. Very expensive. A disappointment

The restaurant is serving good food but we were so cramped that we couldn’t enjoy it as everyone was clambering over us with foo, drinks etc. Very expensive for such a cramped space.

Service was okay, but the food quality was appalling. We had the 3 set omakase. When we had the sashimi and sushi, the seafood and rice were all dry, hard and stale with minimum flavour. Realistically, if I had known the taste was so poor, I would never have booked this place for a birthday date with my girlfriend. To put it bluntly, I have had better quality fish from sushimania and I only had to pay £20 per person. I will definitely not recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a japanese restaurant in soho london as it wasn’t good value for money.

It was very thoughtful of them to put us at a table. They made my mom’s birthday really special with a little dessert. The presentation of the food was spectacular. I would eat the gorgeous little dishes too if I could. Fish was superb and the appetiser was delicate. Pity about the wagyu sushi. The mayo and Parmesan robbed the shine of the wagyu. Wagyu fat is delicate and fragrant and that was masked by all the cheaper fats that was stacked on top. If you want to add so much extra stuff, you could make the same dish with rib-eye and be as appetising.

Was hoping for a much better sushi experience. Not very elaborated- nigiris were just pretty much the same as the sashimi - plus the sushi rice; lacking flavour and creativity. Have experienced a lot of omakase in London and abroad and disappointed overall. Staff was very friendly, attentive and professional and cocktails were very good. Unfortunately would probably not repeat.

Went for lunch as a birthday treat for my son and his girlfriend, who said it was the best meal she had ever had. Strongly recommend Omakase 3 course. Helpful waiter, and chefs evidently take pleasure in creating great looking and delicious food

Quite a safe fish selection, although something a bit more exotic would be also interesting.
Overall fish quality is as expected with price point.

I went to Engawa for anniversary with my boyfriend. We had omakase menu(3 courses) and it's absolutely overpriced. Although I understand that Japanese fine dining is expensive in London, it could be much better. Quality of fish for sushi and sashimi was poor. Also, customer service wasn't great. Staffs were kind, but a guy who served food even didn't know about food very well. It must be improved since it's a fine dining restaurant. Furthermore, they forgot to give my jacket back so we had to go back to get my jacket back. It's also my fault, but they should've asked us if we kept clothes before we left the place. It's too overrated and overpriced.

Had the most amazing experience at Engawa. Food and service were perfect! The only downfall was a couple sat behind us who were extremely rude to the staff at the restaurant. Although fairly expensive, it was worth every penny! Will definitely come back

A cozy restaurant with spendid service minded personnel. The expectations were high on the food and Engawa lived up to it! We also had the luck to try the kama toro which was amazing! The Hida meat is a must if they are out of Kobe. The drink pairing to the omakase 5 course were on point as well. We could not have asked for a better restaurant experiance!

I booked a table for two via OpenTable one month in advance to celebrate my boyfriend’s birthday. We chose the 5 course meal, and could not be happier. The service was incredible, punctual and with a perfect wait between one course and the other. Ionela was our waitress and she literally took care of us, explaining us every single plate in detail and precisely and giving us advice. We came for the Wagyu beef but little did we know about the outstanding experience we would have had, because the meal is specifically designed to be a proper journey through the flavours.
The whole staff is amazing and professional: they also lit up candles on the dessert to celebrate my boyfriend and it was very much appreciated. I would have paid 100£ more for the experience we had. I strongly recommend it to people who love food and are curios and willing to try new, surprising tastes.

The food here is truly spectacular and the service is impeccable. The seating is very small and quite cramped inside, but it doesn't really matter when what you're eating is so good! There could also be a few more vegetarian friendly options as part of the set menu. However, overall it's stunning. Definitely recommended!
