We had supper on a warm spring evening. We arrived early, just before 6; by the time we left, the tables and parking slots were all filled. The crowd seemed to be mostly locals, lots of families enjoying their favorite restaurant. We asked for a table in the far corner of the patio, one of the few which has a dynamite view of the adjacent valley and mesas. Perhaps in cold weather the interior patio is cozy, but most tables have only a view of the building. The food is typical mexican standard fare, generally well prepared, and served quickly and piping hot. The house specialty is guacamole prepared tableside, which was very good. Another house specialty is the soapapillas, also very good. Oddly, they only appear on the menu as “by request” with the combination plates. Portions were very generous, which perhaps justifies prices on the high side for NM. I knocked off a star because only bottle beer, mostly fizzy lagers, is available. NM has lots of good craft breweries to complement good mexican food.

The waiters are all doing their absolute best but unfortunately they need way more help. I never once had my water refilled, we couldn’t get our chips refilled and I wasn’t able to get another cocktail. I rarely saw any waiters near our table and when we did they were on the move constantly doing stuff for the customers. The waiters are excellent but very over stretched managing the whole restaurant inside and out.

By far my favorite restaurant- even with a change of ownership since my last opportunity to eat here, the food is amazing and the view outside incredible.

Let me start by saying this: Gabriel’s USED to be my Mom’s favorite restaurant and one I USED to thoroughly enjoy. This was supposed to be a Mother’s Day treat for my Mom. The horrendous service coupled with the THREE hour wait for food made it a nightmare. We had a reservation at 3:30. After a few minutes of perusing the menu, we ordered. We received our guacamole we ordered, then waited … and waited… and waitrd for our entrees. There was little sign of our waiter. And people that arrived well after us received their food and left. We sat uncomfortably trying to find out what was going on, only to be told food would be out shortly. We continued to wait…and waited…patiently, pleasantly. Nearly TWO HOURS AND 40 MINUTES later we were told by our waiter that food would be on the house. Another 20 MINUTES pass. Finally at 6:30, THREE HOURS after arriving food came to the table. The food was obviously rushed, messy plates, rubbery shrimp, subpar everything. We ordered dessert since, hey, food was on the house. We ordered tres leches cake. Who serves DRY tres leches cake?!? That is supposed to be served completely wet. Who serves it dry? Gabriel’s does. This was a huge disappointment. At the end, the waiter angrily threw a bill on the table. No apologies, no thank you for coming, no Happy Mother’s Day for my Mom, and no rose for my Mom, like every other Mom there received. As we started to get in the car in the parking lot, I see the waiter stalking toward us. He asked why we didn’t pay the bill. We told, him that he said the food was in the house. He claims, he meant that dessert was on the house. We reiterated that, that was not what he said. He walked away. We decided to walk back in to talk to the manager. As we tried to do so, the waiter walked back toward us and said everything was fine, everything was taken care of. We decided to get out of there. I reiterate, what a hugely sad and infuriating disappointment. We will NOT be back. Don’t waste your time

The food quality is inferior now, and the service is slow. We have eaten here many times, but this will be the last.

Great Guacamole and food. Quite noisy for a Thursday. A couple crying--screaming kiddos.
