Le Yaca began in 1964 in Courchevel, a tiny, country village in the French Alps. Daniele Bourderau & Gerard decided it would be fun to open a small restaurant. When friends learned of their plans, they told the hopeful restaurateurs they were crazy to think people would drive eight kilometers on a winding, icy road for dinner. Daniele and Gerard hesitated for three months and then decided, “yaca le faire,” a contraction of the French phrase “il n’y a qu’a le faire,” which basically means, “let’s do it.” They called the restaurant Le Yaca as a gag, but the name caught on with customers who were amused by the pun and contributed to the restaurant’s lore by inventing “yaca-isms” of their own: yaca y aller (let’s go). Daniele came to the United States and opened Le Yaca in Williamsburg. Daniel Abid bought Le Yaca in 2001. Daniel worked and trained in such prestigious places as “Le Pre Catelan” and “Lenotre” in Paris; “L’Amandier” and “Roger Verge," and to top it all off, “Alain Ducasse.”

This is where it all started – on the banks of the Rappahannock River overlooking where we grow our oysters. We like to call Merroir a “tasting room,” just so people know to expect something different. Everything is either served raw or cooked on an outdoor grill, small-plate-style, and beautifully paired with craft brews and world-famous wines. Each menu item is singularly-focused, seasonal, and ever-changing, so there’s always a surprise in store.

We dined at Berretts on Thursday night and were delighted from start to finish. Our waiter, Mark, ensured we had everything we needed and was incredibly personable, adding a warm touch to our dining experience. I ordered the "Red, White, and Blue," a delightful trio featuring salmon, crab cake, and scallops, accompanied by creamy rice and grits. My husband opted for the special, which included redfish and fried shrimp. To begin with, we were served bread while we waited, and it did not disappoint. The salmon was flavorful and paired perfectly with tartar sauce, creating an impeccable bite each time. The crab cake was fresh, lightly breaded, and truly delectable. The scallops were cooked to perfection, tender and bursting with flavor. The redfish from my husband’s plate was light and tasty, with just the right amount of bread crumbs to enhance its delicate flavor. The fried shrimp were tender and delicately breaded, offering a perfect crunch with each bite. We were seated promptly at our reservation time, and the entire dining experience at Berretts was flawless. From the attentive service to the exquisite food, our evening was truly memorable. We highly recommend Berretts for an exceptional dining experience.

Oysters on half shell were delicious, very clean tasting for both the “sweet” and the “salty” oysters. Beautiful view looking at the water.

From the moment we walked in the restaurant, every thing was top quality. Seated immediately, very nice ambiance, excellent service, great selection of wines, alcohol and menu selections. We started with a flight of bourbon. Had a caprese salad and Caesar salad. Both ordered the seafood trio. I was surprised how well the shrimp in the beurre blanc was prepared. Shrimp is pretty much shrimp. However, it was really good. Scallops were perfect. Crab cake was nice- next to no fillers. Loved the au gratin potatoes! The cheeses on the creamed spinach was very tasty. The high light of the evening was the banana foster cheesecake. Absolutely perfect. We were in Williamsburg on travel and made reservations as soon as we knew we would be in town.

Amazing food and atmosphere that took us back to the colonial period. The staff was quite knowledgeable on the history of the dishes, and the portions were plentiful and flavorful. We started with the Westphalia ham, which was a charcuterie board with smoked thin-sliced ham. I am not a huge pork fan, but it was PHENOMENAL! My husband is picky, and he said it was the best food he’s tasted. For entrees, I got the trout, and my husband got the pork shank. The trout was delicious, and the pork shank was so tender and juicy, it fell off the bone. We finished the meal with the chocolate tart, which was like a cosmic brownie without the sprinkle. It was rich and decadent. The musician was also a fun touch to the experience. Reservations are the way to go. The tavern is in a colonial building, so remember that the inside will not be super spacious, and the noise level won’t be cushioned. Overall a fantastic experience and a must-visit if you’re in Colonial Williamsburg.
