Originally from Mexico City, Chef Fernando Olea, formerly Chef of Epazote, has been enthralling diners in Santa Fe since 1991. Chef Olea creates sophisticated flavors using Old Mexico’s indigenous and culinary traditions alongside ingredients from around the world. His menu is deliberately small, featuring fresh and locally sourced produce and meats when possible.Nothing evokes the mystery of Mexican cuisine more than mole, a sauce of complex flavors that usually includes toasted and ground spices, seeds, nuts, chocolate and chile. Many mole recipes contain more than thirty ingredients and some recipes have five varieties of chile alone. Chef Olea is delighted to share his moles that include his "New Mexican Mole" that he created to commemorate Santa Fe’s 400 year anniversary in 2009. The large mural in the main dining room, was painted and presented to Chef Olea by Federico Leon De La Vega, a well- known artist from Mexico City.

Small restaurant in downtown Santa Fe showcasing Mexican style Mole, which are various sauces and marinades endemic to the states of Puebla and Oaxaca (among others) in old Mexico. The diner is treated to a sampler of no fewer than five mole to try as an appetizer with tortillas. You then can choose your favorite mole to go over an entree. And the soup… can’t forget the soup. Sopa de Amor was the crowning touch of the meal, and apparently key to the notoriety achieved by this restaurant. The service was great, the drinks (especially the Michelada) on point and the cost reasonable for a James Beard awarded chef. Don’t miss this one.

Staff at Santacfe did everything possible to see that our hours of 6 were comfortable at our patio table. One seat was in the sun so they brought an extra umbrella for shade. We wanted to have a conversation with our friends and they turned the speaker down low so we could hear one another. As is usual with a group paying different amounts the server did everything she could to divide the payment among a couple of cards and a bunch of cash. Her advice about what to order for lunch was spot on when I was trying to decide between a tuna melt and dumplings. Another in our party ordered the sandwich which she liked but could only eat half of. The dumplings had a delicious sesame sauce and were just enough for a lighter lunch. They make their own lemonade and have pretty decent espresso. This is one of my favorite places on Santa Fe.

La Boca is always so good. From simple but effective starters like Manchego & Quince, to complexly satisfying dishes like the Bruscetta (not at all like a traditional idea of bruscetta & one of the most drool-worthy dishes in Santa Fe) to traditional staples like sliced flat iron steak (with a salt caramel sauce that is a big YES), you know you're in for an affordable & delicious treat here. Wildly expanded cocktail menu--including a Sherry flight--are great additions. THAT SAID, if they put real art on the walls instead of the walmart-level posters of pieces of bread, it would elevate everything. In a city with more artists per capita than any other city in the United States, this should be an easy adjustment and in greater alignment with the character of the city. Otherwise, all-in on La Boca!

My mom and I had a wonderful dinner celebrating our birthdays at La Plazuela last night. Efrain was our server, and he made the evening 5 stars! He was kind, friendly, gave us great recommendations, and brought us champagne and a brownie to celebrate our birthdays! The food and atmosphere was amazing too.

Wonderful classic Santa Fe restaurant with outstanding food and service. Great fusion of New Mexico tastes with gourmet dining. My partner's mussels for a unique appetizer mixed as they were with posole; my elk tenderloin main dish was superb. My only suggestion would be a lighter dessert -- a sorbet or something like that. The desserts on offer looked great, but we'd had too much. However our server brought us lovely little nibbly to round off the meal. Excellent wine list.
