Brightly colored walls give this family-run restaurant both a cozy and upbeat feel; its owner/chef’s approachability and staff’s friendliness add the feeling of a neighborhood trattoria. Pizza here bakes in a brick oven and includes something for both the meat lovers and the vegetarians, and even fish lovers will have their day with the Al Salmone Affumicato: mozzarella, tomato, and smoked salmon. Save room for the desserts—a selection of Italian favorites that make choosing difficult. Ask about the chef’s gelato of the day.

New York-style pizza in the heart of Texas? Yes, sir! Zoli’s head chef is a New York native, and Zoli’s serves all the selections of a Big Apple pizza joint: rounds, squares, and even Grandma pies on Wednesdays only. (Those who have to ask what it is, need to try it.) The toppings, however—the toppings are pure Texas: jalapeno ranch, habanero honey, seasoned brisket, roasted chicken, bbq sauce. Never fear—Zoli’s lets diners customize their pies too, so every patron will find their perfect pizza at this laidback restaurant.

Set amid a wash of brown—floor, chairs, counters, and walls, customers can’t help but be drawn to the red oven sitting like an oversize apple on one side of Cane Rosso. This specially made oven is where the magic happens: It cooks Cane Rosso’s Neapolitan-style thin-crust pizzas at 900 degrees in under 90 seconds. Laid-back and often boisterous, Cane Rossa is good pie in a fun atmosphere. Diners can choose from 20 different variations on the menu, or create their own. With its fresh dough, hand-pulled mozzarella, and variety of toppings, this is some of the best pizza in Dallas.

Although the founders of Mio Nonno (which has multiple locations) were from Albania, not Italy, the menu here features traditional insalate, primi, and secondi offerings from Central and Southern Italy. And repeat customers rave about the food’s authenticity. Pizza comes on oven-baked, slightly charred, chewy crust. Those who like spice should dive into the Diavolo, with spicy Italian sausage and hot Calabrese peppers. Mio Nonno’s wine list features selections from all over the world, and the restaurant further caters to individuals by offering gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan dishes.

Pizza by way of Brazil, imbued with South American flavors? It may sound too good to be true, but it’s exactly what Delucca Gaucho serves. Called a “Rodizio de Pizza,” Delucca Gaucho is a “continuous style” pizza restaurant. This means patrons get unlimited pizza varieties for one set price. And that price includes more than pizza—meals start with charcuterie and antipasto and house-made lobster bisque, and then the savory and dessert (!!) pizza come around. There are typically around 15 different entrée pizzas, and dessert pizzas include tastes like banana, Nutella, and dulce de leche.

Floor-to-ceiling brick walls, and lights set amid draped ivy, set diners up for a cozy meal with farm-fresh ingredients. Antonio has a dedicated pizza menu with both specialty pies and make-your-own selections, but diners may have to ask for it. Wine lovers be sure to peruse the wine list: While there are a fair number of by-the-glass selections, Antonio really shines in its bottles of red, which are predominantly from Italy. Wine Spectatorrecognized Antonio for its selection, and this excellence extends to the restaurant’s use of decanters.

The atmosphere may be casual, but the food at PaneVino Osteria is pure art. Come for the pizza—which includes a meat lover’s, a margherita, a prosciutto with caramelized onions, portabella mushrooms, and fontina fig molasses glaze, and a white pie with truffle oil—but sample as many other dishes as possible. This extends to the shaved ribeye crostini, a crowd-favorite appetizer complete with gorgonzola and a balsamic glaze, and to the blueberry bread pudding for dessert. Service, from the wait staff to the bar, is attentive and quick.

While Saint Rocco’s upstairs bar area is modern, with a view of the Dallas skyline, the restaurant itself is old-school New York Italian—the red carpet, dark wood chairs, overabundance of framed photos on the wall, and carefully arranged liquor bottles in the bar at the back. Pizzas are basic, but well worth the price, and diners can ask for additional toppings. Saint Rocco’s offers some family-style meals, which can start with pizza, so it’s a great way to sate a pizza craving along with some sturdy Italian offerings (Caprese salad, chicken parmesan, Sicilian lasagna).

Taverna at Legacy West is one of several in a chain, specializing in Northern Italian food, especially risotto. Unique pizza offerings include a California chicken pie with rotisserie chicken, avocado, and feta, in addition to mozzarella and tomatoes. Customers recommend the Tartufo, with truffle bufala mozzarella, fontina truffle fondue, and speck. Taverna offers a wide array of gluten-free options, including pizza and pasta. While they serve some of the best pizza in Dallas, diners may opt for the house special risotto, whether mushroom, seafood, or green (peas, asparagus, and fried artichoke).

Diners will find pizza on Princi’s brunch, lunch, and dinner menus, with pies ranging from typical (pepperoni, margherita) to special (black fig and gorgonzola, roasted rosemary chicken with asparagus and cherry heirloom tomatoes). Wild boar gnocchi intrigues as a very Texan Italian combination, and it comes recommended, along with a variety of local Texas brews. Princi’s menu warns patrons to save room for dessert, and they should—sorbets, gelatos, and a tiramisu that will delight every tastebud. Coffees, dessert wines, and ports, too.

Colorful wall art and an open warehouse-style ceiling set the scene for a casual, delicious meal, whether dining on pizza or classics like spaghetti and meatballs. But let’s face it: People come here for the wood-fired pizza served in 14-inch pies with a plethora of toppings to choose from. Here, “reds” and “whites” refers to the pizza and not the wine, and chefs offer a special pie every month. Classics include the “Honey Bastard,” with housemade mozzarella, hot soppressata, bacon marmalade, and habanero honey. Diners can craft their own, with a choice of up to three toppings. And dessert pizzas are also available. Happy hour, which runs 3-6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, features select pizzas at a reduced price.

North Italia is a nationwide chain of open-concept, casual restaurants serving homemade pastas and familiar Italian fare (North, of course). Pizza features on both the lunch and dinner menus, with a bacon & egg (grilled asparagus, roasted potato, rosemary) and prosciutto with fig, goat cheese and arugula, catching the eye. Mainstays like meat and margherita are here, and the chef creation rotates daily, so be sure to ask a server for that. As an appetizer, the chef’s board is a crowd-pleaser, as are both the bombolini (Italian donuts) and affogato for dessert. North Italia serves local brews, too.
