Philip Montano always dreamed of owning his own delicatessen. In 1969, he opened Chef’s International Gourmet in the Roanoke Valley. His place was the first gourmet specialty shop in the area and it was a tough sell. Montano won customers with quality specialty ingredients on his shelves, a bright smile and a warm nature.

In 1988, the permanent location for Montano’s opened at Townside Festival Mall with 150 seats and a small but well stocked gourmet shop, complete with delicatessen, wine selection and imported beer area.

The restaurant now seats 252 and includes a private banquet room and our newest upscale venue Anellos, an outdoor cafe and a 40 foot carved wood and mirrored cocktail bar. Marty Montano continues to lead the restaurant in creative cuisine, innovative specials and a great environment.

The food was excellent. Our server was very helpful. Helped me decide which main course and also dessert. Was Saturday night at 6pm so started out quiet but noise increased. But it was about what you would expect for night and time. Going again.

Friendly staff, host greeted us and recognized that I had put “date night” under our reservation and asked about our preferred seating. Service was great and timely. Food was delicious and we ate every bite. Drinks from the bar were good. If we had not been so full from the appetizers and food I’m sure desert would have been great too!

We love to eat at Montano’s while spending the night in Roanoke. The service is prompt and the staff is friendly. I had their salmon special with Mediterranean roasted veggies. It was delicious! I only wish it would have had more of the special sauce they had on top because it was so good. I always get a slice of cake to go. The lemon or the coconut are my favorites. Make a reservation as they can get busy.

It'd been too long since we'd been to Montano's. Made a reservation and was able to walk in at the appointed time - they even seated my friend who arrived just before me. We shared a bottle of the house dry Rose and my husband had beer. We had appetizers - fried green tomatoes for the women and fried oysters for my husband. My friend always gets fried shrimp - so I decided to try it. Excellent! Brought food home. My husband enjoyed his chicken cacciatore.

Service was lousy. Appetizer ordered in advance of food order arrived with the food order. Drinks were painfully slow. Refills ordered before food arrived did not appear until meal was actually over. Disengaged waitress. I tried to order the pork chop medium, and the waitress said they would only cook it well done. Food was unremarkable. The restaurant was not at all busy when we were there, so there was no excuse for the poor service.

They were very busy and everything was not relaxing bc we were very near the hostess stand. Of our 2 drinks one was very much lower and lighter than the other and had to be sent back for another shot but we question the liquor used. The oil for the bread is tasty but the bread was refrigerator cold. I was glad to see they were busy but they seemed to be having a lot of trouble with reservations ( which we had) and walkups. The servers were working very hard but atmosphere was scrambling. We have not eaten there in the evenings in quite some time bc we live in Fl now and we were disappointed in all but the food. Last time we were there they had tablecloths and candles. Formica type tables were nothing special. I would not recommend anyone go on weekends. Maybe lunch is better.

A local favorite of ours for dinners out! We chose Montano's for a delayed Valentines dinner. Also Thursday is $25 wine night! We chose a Malbec from France. Just right. Appetizer was a Mezze Platter with Goat Cheese, olives, hummus & pitas, all in ample quantity. My dinner was Chicken Piccatta w/ angel hair. Just right, nice & light. My wife had crab cakes w/asparagus. Together with always good service, it made for a great evening out!

On our most recent trip we went for Valentine's and the reservation was chaos. However, at the end of the night, the overall experience was very nice. One of our meals was on the cool side, but was immediately rectified. The togarashi tuna appetizer was phenomenal. Our side salad served with an avocado vinaigrette was very tasty as was the fresh bread with seasoned oil. My husband had the stuffed flounder. His dish was exceptional, but a bit small for the price. My dish is not on the current online menu; ahi tuna topped with crab, served with a baked potato and asparagus. The food was awesome, however it came out cool and once rectified the tuna was overcooked. The online menu is not up to date. The actual menu is much smaller. The desserts were the highlight of the night, very tasty. Overall, our server Zack, was very good. Since it was a very busy night, he did great. I would recommend this restaurant if the menu suits you.

Our server, Joe, was courteous, friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. He answered questions and, although became very busy, continued to be attentive to our needs. My wife had salmon which she enjoyed. I had a steak that I ordered medium rare but was came well done.

My wife and I were celebrating 23rd Anniversary. We had a reservation. When we arrived we were seated right away but nearly 15 minutes elapsed before our waiter arrived. We were poured some water, mine was brown, evidently poured from a previously used tea urn. Another several minutes passed before we were offered drinks and had to ask for a wine list. We got a bottle of wine, then another because our food didn’t arrive until we had been seated for over 60 minutes. Oh, and the wine glasses looked dirty. Our food was okay or maybe our perception was compromised by then (2 bottles of wine). Our waiter was entertaining in a slightly odd manner. We thought he might have been “high” but not sure. We had been to Montano’s previously for a lunch date. I’d have to say we were a little disappointed this time.
