A16 is a Michelin rated and James Beard Award Winning restaurant bringing the delicious and hospitable traditions of lively Campania to San Francisco. The chic, rustic/modernist venue is named after the motorway that transverses the South of Italy. Executive Chef Yosuke Machida carefully selects local, organic produce and meats to prepare a daily menu specializing in wood oven-fired Neapolitan pizza, braised meatballs, vibrant salads, pasta and local meats and seafood dishes. Owner Shelley Lindgren works closely with a well-versed, hospitable service team to bring one of the SF Bay Area's celebrated wine and food destinations.

    Had heard great things about this restaurant so was excited to be going. Ambience is great, as were the staff. The food was very disappointing however. We had pizza and a salad, which should not be a heavy lift! The little gem salad tasted mainly oily; couldn't taste vinegar or lemon in the dressing. Also the artichokes were had to detect. The pancetta were just fatty blobs, without much flavor. Even the pizza, funghi in our case, was not pleasing. The wild mushrooms themselves were good, but the cheese disks (caciocavallo, I think) tasted weird, and crust was a little undercooked.

    We were seated 20 minutes late for our 7:45 reservation. Additionally the table they sat us at was basically in the middle of the sidewalk. Everything we asked for from our waiter seemed to frustrate him. Overall not a great ambiance or experience.

    At the time my reservations were made, only outdoor seating was available; however, I asked if indoor seating was available when I showed up, and the hostess found indoor seating for my party. Wait staff was very friendly and helpful.

    Hubby and I shared the Little Gems salad, which included artichokes, asparagus, peas, and pancetta. It was delicious! Then we shared an Arabiatta pizza, but we asked for the spicy chile oil on the side. It was also delicious, and we even liked it with a tiny amount of the oil. We each had a different glass of Italian red wine -- hubby had the Montepulciano, and loved it, and I had one the waiter recommended, which I tasted first, ordered, and loved. Highly recommended.

    Wanted to go for yrs but never seemed to make it. After trying A16, it will be on our restaurant location for quality food, fun and energetic atmosphere. No full bar but didn’t miss as wine list was great.

    There were three of us on a Monday night 6 pm. We ordered a pizza, a pasta, and the strip steak. The pizza was great. The dough was perfect, the sauce was light, the flavors were full. We were divided on the pasta. To me it seemed slightly undercooked (and I understand al dente). I make my own pasta noodles weekly. To my taste these needed 30 seconds to one min longer. But my two guest liked them as is. The steak was pretty. However, it came out sliced and obviously south of medium rare. I then realized there had been no discussion of steak temp when I ordered. We sent it back to be cooked just a little more. It was fine when it came back. Our server was not super attentive. We joked that the service is just like you would find in Naples. We ordered a gelato and a strawberry rhubarb dessert. Both were very good.

    Food was excellent as always. Host/Manager, I believe his name is Stephen, was very attentive. Waiter was good but maybe had too many tables? It was very difficult to get his attention at times.

    Incredible dining experience! From the wine to the pizzas to the appetizers to the main courses, such delicious food and wonderful experience. Took my parents for early mother's and father's days and celebrated our daughter's high school graduation early. PERFECT place to do this! The burrata with crostini is the BEST! Pizzas are always great. The orechiette with lamb sausage was so good we ordered a second! The meatballs, the seasonal salads. All are worth raving about. Dessert -- one of our favorites EVER anywhere is the chocolate budino tart. Also tried the tiramisu this time -- also great. And the wines pairings with the different courses and flavors are always spot on with Shelley and team. THANK YOU!!

    Eat at the Bar inside. We sat outside on Friday night, clearly a busy time but we waited an excessive period of time for help with drinks, ordering and then having food served. Funny, the week before, on Friday evening we sat at the bar and had a phenomenal meal and wine with great attention.

    We loved everything about the meal. We sat at the chef’s counter and the guys making the pizza really made it a fun night. You can tell they enjoy what they do and working together. Food was delicious too!

    We had made reservations for two and our hostess gave us an option for a high top table near the bar or a seat at the chef counter. Neither option nice for an Anniversary Dinner. The host Stefan was amazing stepped in found us a table in the back and even added some flowers and candles and complimentary champagne to toast our 29th wedding anniversary! Stefan attention to details and customer service was amazing as we saw him greeting many guest making sure they were having a good experience. The food was very good and pizza is top notch!

    Great food and service. To start we shared the beet salad and burrata with prosciutto. Then we shared two pizzas which were very good: The fungi, and the vesuvio which had excellent soppressata. I arrived at the restaurant a few minutes early and I let the hostess know that my friends were stuck in traffic. I was hoping that they could push our reservation out by 15 minutes and I was willing to wait until my friends arrived before being seated - I was pleasantly surprised when the hostess said it wasn’t a problem and that she could seat me at our table while I waited for my two friends. I hadn’t dined at a16 for several years but hope to return sooner for my next visit.

    I use to dine frequently here. Brought some business partners. We ordered artichoke and meatball appetizer. It was mediocre. Then we decided to order the pizza to play it safe. That was much better. Waiter was in a rush to get us out. Quality has really deteriorated over time.

    Thanks to Shelley and her compassionate staff, there is no other restaurant which is more welcoming. The menu offerings and quality and deliciousness of the food are without doubt, the very best. We dined outdoors in the beautifully constructed parklet complete with thoughtful heaters., Generous portions send us home with food that holds up and makes for a great snack or meal. Kudos to keeping the standard so high; the I diminished caring.

    Outside parklet seating was not fun at all, especially with kids, floor and table were uneven. Wasn’t enough space on the table for our party of 6. The food as always is great but one of our pizzas came very burnt at the bottom, but the staff were more than happy to provide us with a new one.

    Enjoyed the evening and the food and drink. Comfortable seating. Good zone in the back of the place, past the kitchen. Our server, Davide from Italy (!), was fabulous, friendly and knowledgeable; the food met expectations (which were high to begin with) and the strawberry sorbet dessert (made on the premises) perhaps the greatest such creation we've ever eaten. The taste was sublime. I mean, it was as if we were eating perfectly ripe, sweet strawberries off of a plant, so fresh and evocative of real fruit. We'll go there again.
