A century ago, at the base of Camelback Mountain, Sylvia Evans Byrnes, daughter-in-law of artist Jessie Benton Evans, began welcoming friends to her home, Jokake, with afternoon tea. Known for her warmth, charm and gracious nature, Sylvia had a gift for making guests feel at home, and in 1926, her intimate gatherings soon grew into a beloved social tradition. In 1928, the property expanded and opened its doors as Jokake Inn. Tea became synonymous with the inn’s warm hospitality, bringing together conversation, artistry and the leisurely spirit of the Sonoran Desert. Guests savored tea fare alongside chicken sandwiches and Sylvia’s rich chocolate cake, affectionately named “Sure Death,” while taking in the beauty of the surroundings and creating memories that endured for generations. Today, 100 years later, The Phoenician continues this cherished tradition of Afternoon Tea, which has been part of its story since opening its doors in 1988, celebrating the timeless art of gathering over tea.

Excellent service….price point high…very surprised with no tiering of food for a full tea…excellent tea selection. View was lovely, and a corner nook for one was perfect.

The ambiance would have been better if it were in a side room, not open and near the bar or the lobby. The noise level was too loud for a nice afternoon tea. That was the main issue. The service was quick and gracious, and the women were friendly and upbeat. The second issue: The value for the money Too costly (at $110 each) for a plate of "tiny" finger sandwiches and a plate of tiny desserts. Granted, the gal came around to see if we wanted a few more little sandwiches. There were two scones, but they were not notable. I think it would be great to offer a wider variety of teas, and the ability to try more than one each. We each received one choice and one pot, but it would be nice to have the option to try more than one choice each. The total cost was $262 for the experience ($44 gratuity added on). I couldn't help but feel I could spend the money more wisely on a different experience. We DID scratch one off of our list of "to-dos." There are a handful of choices for afternoon tea that are more cost-friendly and offer just as good (or better) choices that are also more quiet.

A fun experience. All the staff seem genuinely excited to make your day wonderful. We were one of the last seatings and the end of the service there were some extra sandwiches they boxed up for us to take. We ate them for dinner! What a treat!

My mother and I thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon tea. We had the Full Tea -- vegetarian. The options were varied and delicious, our table was right by the piano, and we loved chatting with the pianist. She was very gracious, playing a number of our requests. The servers, especially Wanda, were attentive, knowledgeable, and fun to chat with. We did not feel rushed at all. We had a leisurely tea. The surroundings were lovely. I'd absolutely recommend a booking!

This is always a very special and sentimental experience as I have been coming for years for birthdays, holidays, baby showers and just because. Ask for Wanda for your table - she always makes you feel so warmly welcomed.
