Excellent!
The food is fabulous! Everyone from the busboy to the owner is very attentive to your needs and friendly as well. The atmosphere is probably the best we have ever experienced. It is attractive and comfortable, warm and inviting all at the same time. You must experience this restaurant for yourself. There is a large bank parking lot right across the street making parking a breeze.
What a great little French Bistro. Everything was just wonderful. We both had the three course Prix Fixe which consisted of 2 appetizers and a main course. I had the Paella and my wife had the Lamb Chops and the were both perfect. Service was excellent and the Covid seating was proper. Can't wait go go back again
Dined here on sat for the first time and can’t wait to go back! Everything from the service to the quality of food was absolutely amazing, perfect for a date night or celebration. It’s BYOB but they have a wine list so you can buy per bottle if preferred, all the wines on their list was affordable.
Not a large menu but ample enough. The food was fresh and delicious. The wait staff pleasant and ambience very serene. I will definitely return.
Pleasantly surprised to see a good French restaurant in the NJ side of the Hudson. Their restaurant had good ambience, good music, good service. They offer a good selection of choices with relatively large American-sized portions. However, their prix fixe prices are more expensive than Manhattan prices. I would rather go to NYC next time we want French cuisine.
Creative and tasty courses in an attractive and inviting atmosphere. Staff is attentive and always helpful and engaging.
My group of friends and I very much enjoyed our dining experience. The food, service and ambience were all wonderful and created a lovely experience for us, it was especially a nice treat for folks who had not had indoor dining for a long time. Will have to visit again soon!
Returned to sample their delicious offerings and will return again!
Wonderful food, attentive service, great ambiance with comfortable spacing between tables and other COVID precautions. Will definitely be going again.
Lovely space with amazing food. Went for Valentine's Day and had 4 course meal. Everything was delicious. The owners are a very friendly couple who strive to make everything wonderful. Every bite was outstanding. The music selection was also lovely. There was a bit of a wait for our second course but not lengthy.
My only suggestion for improvement would be to knock the service up a notch. We had an overly chatty waiter who was nice but we were there for Valentine's day so wanted time alone. Young busboy seemed very hesitant and could use a bit more training.
All in all a lovely place, delicious food and I'm glad COVID didn't cause them to close. They opened right at the start of it and were able to hang in there.
Thanks so much for your kind words. We really appreciate it. And thank you for the valuable feedback on our service. We are indeed in the process of training some new staff and we are grateful for your patience and understanding. We look forward to welcoming you back! Thanks again!
I have to say that this was the tastiest food I have eaten in New Jersey!
My wife and I visited for Valentine's Day, had the three-course meal special, and bought a bottle of wine. The facade is not that impressive and there is no parking but MAN, the food was awesome! The food was far and away better than any I have had in the Ironbound, Millburn, Montclair, West Orange, or any restaurants in either Essex or Hudson County with comparable pricing.
I had the lobster crepe, mushroom risotto, and lambchops and I do not remember when I have eaten tastier food. I hope this restaurant succeeds because the food really is spectacular. I have eaten at three different Michelin Star restaurants: two in NYC and one in Tokyo and this food was tastier than what I ate in either of the NY restaurants.
Dinner for two was a bit pricey at $350 but it was my first anniversary and Valentine's Day so prices may have been higher. My wife liked the ambience. I don't much care about ambience so long as the food is good as anyone who lives in North Jersey has visited restaurants with beautiful views of the City and mediocre food.
All in all 9.5 out of 10! If there were parking and this place had a liquor license I would give it an unabashed 10 out of 10! As I said, I hope this restaurant succeeds because its success will force the area's other restaurants to improve the taste of their food.
Wow! Thank you so much for your wonderful review. Sorry about the current parking situation. Due to the blizzard the snow plows blocked the street spots with huge piles of snow. In warm weather there is ample street parking. Needless to say, we are looking forward to the Spring thaw. You are correct that the Valentine's day menu was a very special prix fixe and not reflective of our "everyday" pricing which is $65 per person for two courses or $79 for three. Hope to see you soon! Thanks again!
Discovered this place on a lark. Food was incredible, and service was great too.
First time at restaurant for perfect Valentines night.
We will definitely be back soon.
First time at this restaurant and it will not be the last. Beautiful space, wondering seating at a cozy booth for two, great food and good service add up to a winner. Looking forward to trying the restaurant on a regular night and experiment further with the menu.
The beautiful colors, decoration, and ambiance of this restaurant makes it an ideal spot for a small group of friends, or even a date night with your love! I came on a "Galentine's" date with my best friend. The food was delicious and everything was plated beautifully. From start to finish, I had such an enjoyable evening! The owners were lovely people and also came around to see that everyone was enjoying their dinner.
I would highly recommend this restaurant! 5/5 stars!
Valentine’s Day dinner was nice. The prix-fixe menu included lobster crepes and foie-gras, with a duck 3-ways entree. Everything was delicious but the duck ordered medium came out medium-rare. I ate it anyway - didn’t want to offend the chef, as the medium rare cook was also perfect - just not my preferences.
This is my second time visiting le Bistro. I appreciate the French classics so close to home, cooked very well, and at half New York prices. This is a Jersey foodie’s dream. The atmosphere is quaint, the lighting tasteful, the music sexy, and the decor exotic in its French homeliness.
Le Midi has come to roost right here in South Orange. This place is not just a French restaurant in New Jersey. It actually looks like a restaurant in France, transplanted right here to the Garden state.
Mary and Adam are both delightful, fully vested and present for the big show. Chef Krug is hard at work, agonizing over every detail at the pass, applying the final seal of authentic quality. And lest we forget, that’s what it takes to properly run a restaurant.
There’s no doubt in my mind that I will return a third time or beyond. And I’d like to be selfish and say don’t come (more for me) but if I did, I’d be doing you a disservice, as you must experience this delectable feast. Dollars be damned.
Thank you SO much for this amazing review! You "GET" us and we really appreciate it. But Oh NO!...Your duck? Please know that we would have been happy to correct the temperature for you. We will always make it right. Please don't be afraid to speak up and hold us accountable for the standard we strive for. Our goal is to give you the best experience possible. Thank you for the valuable feedback. PS- For the record...you could NEVER insult Chef Krug...(he really is the nicest guy). ;)
Fabulous food, fit for foodies! Atmosphere was lovely, felt transported to a southern France/Greek island escape for early Valentines Dinner💕 Duck dish outstanding, halibut superb. Will be back soon!! Thank you Owner Mary!!!
Delicious!
Sunday evening dinner for 2. Appetizer octopus and bouillabaisse were generous and delicious. Entrees pan-seared skate and salmon Provençal were prepared perfectly. Service very friendly and attentive. Room beautiful. Wonderful dining experience.
Fantastic food and service. Three generations and variety of diets - everyone was amazed by each course both price fixe and Tapas choices.
Excellent !! Food was outstanding and the ambience is delightful.
Amazing food. Great service and ambiance. Would highly recommend!
It’s true that we didn’t have to leave the state other than our county for a taste of Mediterranean cuisine located in South Orange combining French and Mediterranean flavors. Reservation was easily made through their website for 630pm indoor dining. They offer outdoor dining weather permitting and takeout. Parking was available on the street and after 530pm one doesn’t have to feed the meter. When we arrived, there were some patrons enjoying their meal. Social distancing was enforced as the capacity was only 24 patrons inside and table were nicely separated. The indoor decor was spectacular with the eye popping azur at the table, the walls and ceiling taking one to the French Riviera with French music playing throughout the establishment. Our server was Caroline and Marshall who read out the special. Complimentary homemade bread was brought out with the dipping sauces. These came out warm and smelled delicious. They were so good we had asked for seconds. The menu consists of prix fixe meals. We ordered the beet salad, fruit de mer salad, lobster crêpes, scallop dish. These were delicious with no complaints. Our entree were lamb chops, steaks, and Shakshuka. The food came out hot. At least 2 liked their meal, but the ones with the steak were disappointed. The meat didn’t taste like steak as advertised. It seems that their dish was flavor piled on top of another to hide the taste. The sautéed spinach came with garlic but also with mushroom. Plain fries would have been sufficient but added cheese and then a mayonnaise type dipping sauce. We were hoping to meet up with the chef after he came to the table next to us but never came out to the floor while we were there. In summary, the warm bread- two thumbs up, the appetizers were delicious and the decor was awesome. It’s unlikely we’ll be back.
It’s very nice place for special occasion, everything in balance between food, ambiance, service.
Great restaurant. Nice area. Excellent food and staff. I will return.
Bistro d'Azur is my new favorite restaurant in NJ. This is by far the best meal I've had in a long time and the quality of food and service rivals the fine dining restaurants in NYC.
Book ahead on OpenTable for a comfortable seat in the Bistro's cozy dining room. The atmosphere transports you to Southern France, with French music, fresh flowers and an overall Mediterranean feel with the decor. The room is both formal and casual at the same time: when you sit down, you know you're in for a special treat, but it's not at all stuffy.
The food is simply sublime. The $69 two-course price fixe includes an appetizer and entree. There are about 7 selections available for each, including the daily specials. I opted for the lobster crepe and the lamb rib chops. The lobster crepe lives up to its stellar reviews: the savory pancake is filled with a healthy amount of lobster and is covered in an indulgent creamy mushroom sauce. Paired with the crusty and warm mini baguettes, it could be a meal in itself.
The lamb rib chops are equally as spectacular: the pistachio-crusted lamb is cooked to a perfect medium rare and is served with pearl couscous and veggies. Chermoula (a garlic/cumin relish) is served on the side, as a nod to the dish's Moroccan influences.
The service is friendly and efficient; the chef even stopped by to say hello and inquire about our dishes.
Overall, a truly 5 star meal and I cannot wait to come back. Highly recommend Bistro d'Azur for date nights or a special occasion!
Fantastic restaurant. Every dish was delicious, from the starters to the main course to the deserts. Our server was great and was quite attentive and took care of us well. We will definitely come back soon!
Great . Loved it
I took my mom there for her 66th birthday and I am completely in-love with this place! Service was phenomenal and the food was amazing! Can’t wait to go back!
Loved everything about Bistro D’Azur. I personally had the Duck Breast and I was so happy with this dish. Also, the trio gelato for dessert was amazing! Thanks for a wonderfuk night. The service was amazing, great people.
Bistro d'Azur is fantastic. Interior of restaurant is beautiful. Layout of tables is great.
Perfect for small or large group. Service is great. And the food is wonderful. Menu has several dishes that I would eat again and again, though Daily Special offering never makes this a reality. Restaurant is the best addition to Maplewood and South Orange restaurant in years.
Bistro is a gem in South Orange. The service and food are outstanding!! Their COVID precautions are above and beyond. 100% recommend it.
It's a beautiful restaurant and we enjoyed the low-key ambience and tasteful decor. The food was disappointing, meriting an ordinary rating when it is priced to be exceptional.
Beautiful BYOB restaurant with an artistic European ambiance. The food was delicious and portioned well.
Wow this was the best meal we've had in years! We loved everything from food to ambience to service!
Absolutely phenomenal
Would definitely come back and dine again. It was excellent!
Wonderful food and service, lovely and safe outdoor dining.
The indoor is spacious, clean, quiet, and made me feel safe (we were there in the middle of COVID). The food was excellent, and so was the service.
