Last minute Father’s Day dinner plans do not typically work out, so getting a table at Bistro D’Azur was a pleasant surprise. The meal was superb. The lobster crepe was rich, and deep with lobster and lobster flavor with just a hint of truffle oil. Mussels— the appetizer special— were a little over done and could have used a bit more acid note with some white wine and herb. The crusted lamb chop entree was to die for. Perfectly cooked, seasoned, and accompanied by seasonal vegetables and couscous. The duck breast entree was similarly prepared and was paired beautifully between the blueberry compote and the rich, crispy duck fat. The service was generally attentive, but came in bursts. 15 minutes after we sat down, we were Finally seen by a very polite, attentive, and knowledgeable waiter. After dessert was ordered, another 25 minutes before a smart and thoughtful waiter noticed something was amiss and asked us, to which we responded that our dessert never showed. 10 minutes later, and a senior staffer brought out our incredible warm, flourless chocolate torte, and said it was on the house. A welcome and generous way to make up for the long wait. The torte, by the way, was one of the best I’ve ever had— candied sliver of orange peel and just a tiny sprinkle of sea salt over the top made the cake come alive in wonderful and unexpected ways. Overall, the experience was marvelous. I’d definitely return.
Everyone was wonderful and friendly
Did not disappoint! Food and service was terrific!
It was a beautiful night to sit outside and enjoy the delicious food. We were a party of six and all were very happy with their food.
The restaurant is lovely. Beautiful environment. We booked an early table (6:30) and were one of only two parties eating inside at the time (there were other tables full outside). Initially the service was professional. We ordered an appetizer and main dish each, and the food was good, though not exceptional. As the restaurant filled up inside, the service became extremely slow. We were interested in dessert and our server told us the options. And then he ignored us for about the next 20 minutes. I had to waive my hand to re-engage his attention. When he finally asked us if we wanted dessert, one of us replied “not anymore.” The server did not acknowledge his delay and in fact would not make eye contact with us. This is the second time we have been to this restaurant, the first time being right after it opened (about 2 years ago I believe). We were disappointed in the service then, but chalked it up to opening pains. After this second experience, we will probably not return.
So sorry Lori. We know our service hasn't been 5 stars lately and we are working non stop to solve it. Since Covid re-openings the industry is suffering a serious labor shortage. Business is coming back faster than work force. We simply cannot find enough staff. At least we are not alone. Thanks for your patience and we hope you'll try again when the crisis has passed.
My new favorite restaurant!!
Very disappointed . When I made the reservation the website said tapas night Thurs and showed a delicious menu. When we arrived the waiter said you were no longer doing tapas night.
So sorry "Eats". We were forced to discontinue Tapas temporarily due to the pandemic labor shortage. We removed it from our website weeks ago, and we also sent emails making an announcement. I am the owner and I was there when you ate with us and you never mentioned you were upset about it. We always accommodate and if you had asked we would have gladly made you Tapas. Speak up next time. We aim to please.
Fabulous food— lobster crepe, duck breast, grilled octopus were outstanding. Wonderful ambience- tables far enough apart, beautiful soft music, and friendly but not intrusive servers. Only complaint was an unacceptable (more than an hour) wait for main courses - perhaps because of large party outside. Will definitely go again.
I was a last minute reservation, and we weren't thrilled with the table. The service was okay, not great. but they were accommodating to agree to switch around a dish to make it shellfish free. Unfortunately it came with a giant Shrimp and had to be returned to the kitchen and one of us had to wait 15 extra minutes to eat. I feel like that dish or even a coffee after dinner should of been comped, that did not happen.. Prices are steep and i was not thrilled with the whole experience. Maybe an off night because i had been there 2 x's before and was very happy. We were a party of 4 and it was a Wednesday night.
The bathroom was impeccable and nicely appointed w/ L'occitane products.
Very attentive staff. Good quiet place for dinner. Food is always excellent leave space for dessert
I am not easy to please, but the food that I had last night for dinner was, as stated in the previous set of questions, OUTSTANDING. The mussels sauté, the fresh seafood salad, the seared tuna were absolutely fresh and prepared to perfection. so was the dessert. Highly recommended .
Get the lobster crepe.
The menu is somewhat limited, and the prix-fixe dinner is somewhat expensive, but the food is outstanding and the service very attentive. Worth the trip and the cost!
Great experience - food and service! We love this local restaurant and are so happy to be able to dine again inside to enjoy the beautiful decor.
The Chef is innovative and always serving fresh ingredients ... don't miss this great restaurant~~
Outstanding! From the ambiance to the food and the local NJ wine option!
First time eating inside
The experience was so wonderful
The best food I’ve had in a long time
The atmosphere was relaxing and loved the music
Restaurant offers a two or three course Prix Fixe menu and the options and portions are perfect. The food was impeccable prepared, wonderfully presented and so delicious you're encouraged to eat slowly and savor every bite. The staff was professional, extremely polite and courteous. We recently moved to the area and this will be a new favorite for us!!
The food was good, atmosphere nice, but service a bit lacking. We ordered wine but had to ask for it twice. Same with coffee at dessert. If they get service right, it would be a great experience.
Innovative good food. Great service. Appetizer ( risotto) a little skimpy
This was my second visit to Bistro d'Azur and I can now confidently state that the food here is so exceptional that the best restaurant dining experience in New Jersey is served at this location. Not only did the food rival some of the very best I enjoyed in Paris, the service was also highly professional and the ambiance memorable. My third visit to the restaurant will not take 6 months, I will be back within a matter of weeks.
An oasis in Essex County NJ.
Thoroughly enjoyed the service, Marshall was engaging, informative, and knowledgeable.
A uniquely special place to enjoy fine food.
You have a choice of a two course or three course meal. The food is EXCELLENT as well as the service. Highly recommend!! Can’t wait to go back!!!
Excellent food and service. My new favorite local restaurant. Everything was wonderful!
Delicious, first time there and would definitely go back. Love when the chef pays a visit to the table as well. Shows he/she cares and makes it a more personable experience.
expensive but satisfying to the most culinary of tastes
The Bistro is a very attractive space with a blue ceiling, flowers and wood accents. The servers were very friendly and were attentive without being annoying. The food choices were limited but the presentation and taste of our meals was outstanding. I can recommend the lobster crepe appetizer and the sea bass and monk fish entrees.
Great food, great service. Would go back for sure.
The food was delicious. I can’t say enough about the staff - they were super-friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. So excited that South Orange has an amazing dining experience now!
We have wanted to try Bistro d’Azur for some time but COVID got in the way. The outdoor space is very comfortable for couples or a few small groups. Service was terrific and the food was delicious and creative with generous portions. We’ll be back!
At this location it is difficult to find parking since it is all on street they don't have a lot for their customers. Arriving for a mothers day celebration in the pouring rain made this a very unpleasant start to our celebration. They could either provide valet parking or some arrangement with the parking lot across the street. The food is good but overpriced for the portions and the service is spotty, the waiters need to be more consistent. I would recommend this only for those who enjoy the food and the rest of the experience is of secondary importance.
This restaurant is gorgeous and the food is terrific. Seems they hired some new wait staff that needs some training. They never knew what plates went where and never used cork screw to open wine.
Love this place but really want them to go back to ala carte. I will definitely go for special occasions but not for a regular Friday night dinner. I rarely order a starter so the prix fix just gets too expensive.
Thanks for your feedback. Apologies about the wine service, it's confusing during Covid where some don't want others to touch their bottle. You are right, we have a lot of new staff. Restaurants everywhere are struggling right now to find labor. It made News Hour last week so at least we are not alone! We love our new people though, and are working hard to get them trained to the polished service you expect and deserve. Please come back soon to check up on our progress with that.
We had a very good experience at Bistro d'Azur. We sat at the bar due to Covid seating limitations, which isn't ideal, but it worked fine. Food was outstanding. The Duck Confit Salad and Lobster Crepe were really memorable. We both shared the Venison special (with Spaetzle and Red Cabbage). The mains were great, though the cabbage was a little underwhelming (coming from a German household where red cabbage is elevated to a high art form, I'm a bit picky there). Both desserts were also very good. Overall, it was a great first visit. We'll be back.
Thanks so much Erik. And thanks for being a good sport about the bar seating. There are only so many tables we can fit inside six feet apart. #pivot I have German in-laws so I hear you loud and clear about the virtues of cabbage! Looking forward to seeing you again and next time we will do our best to get you an actual table. Thanks again for your feedback.
We had a terrific meal outside. We were 3 people and ordered different dishes. The risotto and octopus appetizers were stand out delicious. The lamb chops were the best main. We also felt very covid safe.
Thanks so much Mindy! Hope to see you again soon.
Excellent meal, chef’s attention to freshness and detail made it a special dinner to remember.
Very enjoyable meal. Options were limited but all very appealing. Excellent presentation.
Thanks so much Matthew. Although our menu isn't very long we do change it often to keep with our concept of seasonal and locally sourced. Please come back again soon and check out the changes.
Food was fantastic and service was great as always.
My husband and I dined outside here this weekend. The heat lamps kept us warm and there are blankets available too. The staff was so welcoming and helpful! As always, the food was delicious. Get the lobster crepe...it’s a favorite. Also try the local port, if you enjoy after dinner drinks. I look forward to returning soon!
First visit. We were very pleased and will be back.
