Bobby Van's Grill - New York Ave.
Atmosphere was good. The staff was professional and friendly and the service was great. Food was kinda overpriced for the quality. Don’t give me wrong the food was good, but not exceptional. Two stakes, two sides, two deserts and one drink was $200 with tip. Same meal with higher quality stakes at RuthChris is in the $150 range.
The filet mignon was tender and cooked to perfection. Desserts were all good, sorbet, key lime pie, peach cobbler. Very accomodating in making substitutions.
For context, I give passing grades to restaurants 9 times out of 10. Went to about 5 DC restaurants this week and my experience was awesome save this one. I am writing this because I have to believe management would genuinely like to improve.
Started out positively, table was ready and the gentleman greeter was engaging and impressive. Waiter took 10-15 minutes to acknowledge our existence and then I’d say he stopped by three more times at 30- 60 minute intervals. Had one glass of wine, when we probably would have had 3 if we could get our waiter to make eye contact.
Once food was ordered, it was promptly delivered by those assisting the waiter
Baked potato was cold. Rest of food was hot. Wasnt great (I know, that’s certainly a matter of opinion and not the reason I’m taking the time to provide some constructive feedback)
After finishing our meal, Sit there another 50-60 minutes and by then too tired and thirsty to take a chance on dessert.
We mentioned the long waits to the waiter but it was clear he wasn’t interested
The greeter was just as engaging on the way out. In retrospect, I should have kindly pointed out my disappointment to him.
At any rate, my 2 cents...
Great steak, but the shrimp accompaniment was phenomenal! Best service in town!
Split the $50 filet. Taste was okay but not special. Some of it over charred, some of it medium (as ordered). Brussel sprouts were cremated.
The prime rib was the star, seasoned ad cooked perfect. The sides were awful (do not pay the extra $2 for the brussels sprouts, there is a chance of getting them very over cooked) the mash potatoes were obvisouly instant and the sauce for the broccoli should not have been call hollandaise, it was tasteless and weak. Jason provided excellent service!
Bobby Van's Grill is one of my favorite restaurants in the U.S.. The wait staff is highly trained and skilled, and frequently have a good sense of humor as well. The food, both this time and the times I have eaten there in the past, was / has always been fabulous. I recommend the oysters on the half shell, and ALWAYS inquire about their nighty specials, as they usually have a couple of hidden gems in there as well. I highy recommend this nice restaurant!
the best waitress we have ever experienced. her name is Tupou, manger was Lee Meadows
Our first experience and it was great. Went to celebrate my husband's birthday. The service was superb and food was delicious.
Welcoming went above and beyond for our Anniversary.. Loved the chocolate mousse cake.
Had my mothers 83rd birthday dinner. Would ear here again very nice
It was quiet and relaxing, the waiter was very helpful. The table was great!
Kobe hotdogs are awesome. Service and atmosphere are excellent for a rlelaxed business lunch.
Wonderful service from the moment we walked in for our business lunch. Food and service was outstanding. I highly recommend Bobby Vans Grill.
Had a Groupon and we were not drinking but Gilber treated us with enthusiasm, helped us choose by answering all of our questions and took care of us with discreet, attentive care from starters to coffee and a shared warm apple tart. Onion soup, Harry’s salad and sweet chili calamari were great sides and the filet was delicious even a day later. Fun to sit outside and watch all of the tables fill with happy diners.
This wasn't the best date night dinner experience, however, the manager did his part to prevent it from being a horrible experience, so kudos to him. We didn't have appetizers, but waited 30 minutes for a medium well steak, grilled rockfish, loaded baked potato and sauteed spinach. We didn't mind the wait, as we were enjoying each other's conversation. Yet, the fish and spinach to come to the table cold. Our server, apologized and took the fish and spinach back. The manager was gracious enough to send out 2 additional sides as we waited for the fish and spinach. When the fish finally came back, it was the same piece of fish with more sauce. How did we know ? 1) I'm a chef and 2) how I initially cut the fish. The manager denied it being the same piece, but apologized again. By this time my date was annoyed and almost finished his meal. As I don't eat meat, I made a meal of the sides. The manager had the kitchen make another fish for us to take, bought us a round of drinks and gave us dessert. He turned a failed kitchen experience into a great customer service experience.
Our server, Sarah was great!
It was our 10th Anniversary and we were treated like royalty. The server was outstanding. We had a great time and enjoyed great food.
As usual, great food and amazing service!
I had a terrible experience. Bad coordination on their part. I arrived at the restaurant only to be told that my reservation was invalid because someone had reserved the entire dining room for an event. They offered me a sit in the bar area yet no one attended to me. The air conditioning was out of order so it was hot as an oven. I ended up leaving without placing an order. Almost ruined my evening. I wouldn’t visit again, definitely wouldn’t recommend it to anyone either.
The waiter was great. My son has special needs and doesn’t eat a variety of foods. I saw they served a dinner with spaghetti and I asked if he could just have some spaghetti with marinara and they were able to accommodate. The steaks my wife and daughter had were fantastic.
Building under construction - limited view / noise level high - not good for business lunch.
We had a large party but it took 45 mins to get our food.
The food was wonderful! The greetings by the staff is always encouraging. The waitress was not up to the organization’s standard, unfortunately.
This is becoming our restaurant to celebrate our anniversary. We just celebrated our 32 nd wedding anniversary and we think the dining experience at Bobby Van's Grill makes the evening special. Every meal has been perfect! For me, the best steak dinner in DC.

Staff and service was amazing
Bobby Van's Did their usual great job. Food was terrific and service was on the spot.
The service and food were excellent....filet mignon prepared perfectly, apple tart dessert was amazing!
Fantastic experience, food and staff!!
The service is a joke. Everybody is running around in ill suited outfit probably borrowed from the restaurant. There is no knowledge about the food or wine. I wouldn´t call the service rude but absolutely without respect for the customer.
Food is not bad. The steaks are big and done as requested. Unfortunately the sauce was broken and cold.
The ambiance and setting is quite poor, like a upscale fast food joint. Unfortunately I can´t recommend it and I don´t think I will go back.
But my Manhattan was huge and very very strong, that´s good!
Great value. Quiet. Spacious table. Service excellent. Tasty.
Last night of our Washington/Arlington trip included a wonderful meal at this restaurant. Our service was great, food was perfect, ambiance just right. We enjoyed it all -from our drinks in the tavern bar, to our appetizers, meal and dessert, service and food were fabulous. I would highly recommend!
Good place for a business lunch. They have improved on their lunch menu after some misses.
Celebrated an anniversary with another couple. Food (especially our Filet mignon & Ribeye) were cooked to perfection & melted in your mouth-excellent. We were seated at a corner booth/table which helped a bit with the NOISY guests around us, but unfortunately, the larger parties all came in at the same time & our service was slow as a result. We waited for about ten minutes just to get a greeting from the waiter, which, at these prices, there should be other staff checking on drinks, menus, cutlery, etc, albeit they did come after food was served & dining room was clearing out.
Felt a bit neglected--not the same experience we had at Scottsdale, AZ location, where service is over the top.
Great servers, great host. Will be back!
Exceptional service. Waiter could read our minds. Delicious food. First time there, but not the last.
Veal a la Bobby Van superb. Excellent creamed spinach side. Over the top Apple tart (for 2).
Slow start. Calamari was average. Salad and burger we excellent! Location as great service was slightly better the. Average!!
Best steak I have ever put in my mouth. Medium rare small filet was so tender and delicious. Great crime brûlée also.
