Michelin starred Boka Restaurant has been a fixture in Chicago dining since 2003. In January 2014, Chef Lee Wolen joined as Executive Chef/Partner after the restaurant underwent a major renovation. Since his time at Boka, critics have taken notice. Phil Vettel of Chicago Tribune and Eater Chicago both named Lee as “2014 Chef of the Year.” Most recently, Lee was named 2015 “Chef of the Year." Boka’s food features contemporary, American cuisine, focusing on seasonality and sourcing as many local ingredients as possible.
What Insiders Are Saying
Boka serves fancy contemporary American food, but it still manages to be cool and fun despite being nice and expensive.
Amazing food, the short ribs and appetizers and desserts were incredible. Perfect size portions but unbelievably flavorful. Top notch!
Amazing food and fantastic experience
Boka was a really fun dining experience for my birthday. Food was unique and delicious (slow roasted carrots with lentils for a main course yum!). They even printed a special happy birthday message on my menu.
My wife and I spent the evening at Boka enjoying their tasting menu with a bottle of pinot noir we brought from our cellar (their corkage fee is $35). As usual, the food was excellent and service attentive but not over the top. Maybe our favorite restaurant in Chicago, and we eat out here lots. Highly recommended.
Aaaaammmmmaaazing. Perfect. The duck and everything!
Dry age ducks is unbelievable perfect cooked. We had a great time there. Wonderful.
Just moved to Chicago and this was the best meal we have ever had!! Thanks, Boka. We are hooked and will me back—often!
Nice Restaurant with all very well done; high quality and attention very good!! 👋👋👋
1st class food and service.
Love it. The best dining experience in Chicago.
We hadn't been to Boka for a long time, and it was very nice to return. The food was excellent and interesting. The service was very good and friendly. It was prompt, in fact our server, who knew when our show at Steppenwolf started, apologized for the main course coming out too soon, not enough time after the appetizers, which might get us out too early for the show.
Our waiter was charming, gracious and knowledgeable...at first. Since the wine menu was a bit confusing, we asked him to come back in a couple of minutes. He then walked over to the other nearby table and chatted with them for at least ten minutes. (It was early, so we were the only two tables.) His back was to us the entire time, but I was finally able to catch his eye...and he seemed irritated that we had interrupted the chat with his friends. After that, his service was perfunctory at best, which definitely cast a gloomy atmosphere to out dining experience. He had recommended the chicken and the duck, and they were both delicious. Since the servings were plated with only a minimal accompaniment of fresh vegs or anything else, the overall meals were somewhat one-dimensional. We were impressed with the generous portion of morels that came with the chicken, but were disappointed that they lacked that rich morel flavor. (They almost certainly had been reconstituted from dried morels) and the mushroom heads hadn't been cleaned of grit or sand.
The person who brought our meals to the table dutifully described what was on the plates...which is always nice...however his accent was so thick that we couldn't understand a word he said. Not a big deal...it was actually kind of funny.
Our waiter was, at first, really great and when I asked if we could have a salad of fresh greens to brighten up the heavier duck and chicken, he said that the kitchen would be happy to do that for us. So, we each got a lovely and delicious salad and were only charged $10 for the two salads. Really nice !
Boka is consistently excellent. Terrific food. Friendly, knowledgeable service. A pleasant room. I wish the menu were a little more extensive, but that’s a minor quibble. Very convenient to Steppenwolf, with valet parking.
i enjoy a delicious dinner and my favorite part was "dessert"!!! the complete experience was increible. definetly i will come back for the 8 course menu. excellent service from the staff.
Food was very flavorful but I felt it was a little salty overall. The experience of the tasting menu was absolutely incredible. Would definitely recommend.
We had a good time. Went for a birthday celebration and they made it special.
Interesting menu; EXCELLENT food!!
Perfect night out. Great place to celebrate- amazing service and food.
I think the food was spectacular. My favorites were the ricotta dumplings and the duck. The duck is what they are known for and it is worth it for the price. They provide you with some eateries prior to your food coming so you dont remain starving. Definitely can see why this is a Michelin star restaurant
Boka has a relaxing feel. Drinks were good . I loved the finger appetizer they gave us. I could have eaten a plate full of the sweet potato fries amazing , put them on the Menu . The noise level was loud. Severs were very attentive .
Amazing food with top notch service! They made our dining experience one we will never forget!
Our most recent experience at Boka demonstrates why it is such a great restaurant. The food has always been superb. I have eaten at Boka many times in their long history. The meal we had the other night , aged duck for two was probably the best duck I have ever had. I have had roast duck prepared in many ways all over Chicago. What adds to the quality of the food are the extras. I had arranged for flowers and a birthday cake and spoke to a live person the day before. Although they found that request on the reservation it had fallen between the cracks. Mistakes happen. What occurred next is why I praise them. They belatedly brought a complementary vase full of tulips that were wrapped at the end of the meal and presented to my friend. Before a complementary desert they poured us two glasses of sparkling rose. What began as a disappointment turned into memorable meal. To me the manner in which the restaurant handled the oversight demonstrated why they deserve a five star rating.
Spectacular food and drink! The service was impeccable. The most unique beet salad I've ever had--and also the best!
Service was very attentive and professional, and the restaurant's reputation understandable. But we did not find the menu or the food quite as compelling as in our previous visit to this restaurant. And despite making reservations far in advance, we had arguably the worst table in the restaurant. With so many excellent choices available in Chicago, we will likely not be back soon. But we do wish the restaurant continued success.
Amazing culinary experience
There are a few fine dining options for vegans in Chicago. Boka is one of them. The Service: It was spotty at the beginning. We had to ask the busboy to get a waiter to take our cocktail order. We ordered the vegan tasting menu. Several times the servers told us that there were non vegan ingredients: chicken broth and honey. They willingly checked with the chef, when we asked, but it didn't inspire a lot of confidence in the absence of animal products. The Food: Delicious. The other diner is allergic to eggplant and mushrooms so many of the courses had similar textures and flavors. We were told that there were 2 desserts. They were 2 different sorbet flavors: a small scoop of coconut sorbet was the first, a small scoop of mango was the second. Not really 2 desserts. Our reservation was for 6:45. We were seated immediately but we did not leave until 10:30. A bit of a long dinner, in my book. I don't know if we will return, but we would recommend it for a special evening.
The food was good but the service could definitely have been better. We decided to go with the tasting menu and out of nowhere.no heads-up they started to bring food when we didn't even get a chance to order wine (still sipping aperitif) and then they kept doing this with other courses. The people who brought us food would not take due time to explain well what we are about to eat - would kind of murmur something and if we asked a question they were annoyed. For how expensive this place is I'd expect impeccable service and willingness of the staff to provide proper attention to their guest but it's far from it. Again, food was great but I don't think I'd come back due to the service which attributes significantly to the overall experience and value.
For a Michelin star restaurant, we had great expectations in regards to the food. However, we were disappointed in the quality. We did not feel that in ranked higher than a number of other restaurants that we have been to in Chicago. Service was excellent and the atmosphere very nice. But nothing that would suggest that we will be back soon over visits to other Michelin star locations in the future.
Get the duck. You won’t be disappointed. Also the octopus. Front of the house was extremely attentive with our waters refilled, drinks refreshed, etc. The kitchen did a fantastic job of timing each course perfectly. Will be returning again because everything was perfect.
Amazing place. Great foods and even better service.
I really thought it was going to be better. Service wasn’t great, but food was very high quality
Food was fantastic. Service was less than the usual stellar. We brought a guest who had never been to Boka before and told the waiter, but he did not explain the menu or offer any recommendations for him. He just walked away and left us (about 35 minutes after the reservation before our order was taken, when I flagged him down). However, he was very knowledgeable when asked specific questions.
We went to celebrate our anniversary, it was an excellent experience. The service was awesome. Food was amazing.
We did the tasting menu. It was unique and delicious.
The service was great and he food was amazing. Better than expected. Great for special occasions.
Boka for the second time - just as good as I remember. Beautiful ambiance, wonderful food, excellent drink menu and attentive, professional staff. This visit was particularly memorable as we were in the process of adopting our second daughter. We asked if they might consider providing us one of their keys with the number 27, as she was born that day 2/27, for a small fee. Not only did they agree to send us the key for free, the General Manager came over to talk to us personally, listen to our story and provide us with his card for any future visit reservations (we live out of town). We were so touched. Doesn't hurt that this is a place I actually choose to order the chicken (which I don't normally do - because, chicken) and it is outstanding, absolute perfection. Also very accommodating to food sensitivities/allergies. Thank you for a wonderful and memorable meal!
the food was the highlight. Great mix of tastes. Perhaps the best Steak tartare I have had. finished with the chicken for the entre. Chichen was breast meat with the thigh meat turned into a dressing stuffed under the breast skin. This kept the breast moist while the skid was done to a perfect crispness. Accompanying this as sun chokes, a sun choke puree and pickled mustard seed sprinkled around the edge of the plate. I was leary of the pickled mustard seeds but the waitress said it was her favorite dish not he menu. she was right the combination of sun choke sun choke puree and mustard seeds with he chicken in one bite was fabulous. My only reservation was that the wine list was very expensive. I did try a rioja from 2006 recommended by the waitress which was good at $88 but moved to a pintia at 186 to finish which was very good indeed. did not see much on the wine list at least for reds under $200 that I would drink. Other than the Pintia at $186
The food was very good - the tasting menu was definitely a steal. The staff was amazing & attentive, but the atmosphere is not stuffy or snobby. Lots of nice, personal touches. we even got a take-home treat - got chocolate & homemade marshmallows!!
Great food. Wonderful service. Well deserving of their 1 Michelin star, but I would personally give them 2 stars!
