What Insiders Are Saying
You might think Mexican food is best served sloppy and cheap. Downtown's Broken Spanish will prove you wrong.
The food wasn’t that good for the money and the cocktail was terrible
Food was way too expensive for those small portions.
Been here multiple times now. Might have loved it even more on the latest occasion.
Everything is delicious and everything is spicy (just how I like it).
1. Tostada = amazing. Shared this but would recommend getting one for each person, they're so good.
2. Quesadilla was very tasty, very satisfying.
3. Papas were amazing. 4. A broccoli special they offered on the night was great. Combined those two dishes in tortillas as taco filling.
5. Spinach tamale was great. Just delicious.
As always, the margaritas are among the best you'll ever have.
I've had the chile relleno before as well. also amazing and will have to remember to order next time since I didn't on this occasion (another one you need to order one per person for).
Also had the chicharron before, which was cool, but not my favorite. Happy enough to skip it this time.
I feel like there's this misguided notion that Mexican food can't be good enough to warrant these prices, that Mexican food shouldn't be expensive. I defy that. I've eaten at Michellin star restaurants in Paris and even in L.A. that aren't nearly this good, and paid 2 or 3 times the price for my trouble. Just because you can get the world's most amazing food (a carnitas taco at a hole in the wall in Mexico City) for the equivalent of 50 cents doesn't mean you can't pay good money for Mexican food made with real inventiveness and fine ingredients here.
There were multiple parties that were extremely loud. We were seated right next to them and had to ask to move elsewhere. After that, we were put at a table against the main wall, that was sideways instead of vertically with the rest of the tables. Essentially, we were behind another table. In order for our waiter to reach us, he needed to climb over the patrons at the table beside us, angering them. We couldn't even get up to use the restroom without crawling over their table. I'm from NYC and this was so stupidly close that they wouldn't even do this in NY!
The food was lovely, but way too high a price tag for it. For 3 sharing plates and no drinks, we spent $100.
Delicious food and great service!
The noise was atrocious. Some from hr acoustics but mostly from a loud business party. They should have been cut off because they could not handle their alcohol and were falling out of their seats and screaming. Basically ruined our meal.
Good food, great service and nice interiors. But very loud / poor acoustics
Great. We loved it
Unique menu offerings. Waiter was helpful in his suggestions. Food was tasty.
Very delicious and satisfying date night dinner.
Best restaurant in LA. We came from Aus for this place. Chef Ray if you want to move to Australia with your family buzz me! If you come to Australia come at at either ‘Tequila Mockingbird’ or soon ‘Esteban’
It was great. Our waitress was friendly , mentioned the anniversary ( she actually read the reservation) and she made off menu suggestions for my baby ( he’s 13 months old ). He loved the all cheese quesadilla ! The food was delicious and the vibe was great.
One of the best meals we’ve had in Los Angeles in a long time. Anyone who considers themselves an adventurous diner needs to be checking this place out. We as a city need to place higher value and therefore be willing to pay at a higher price point for the skillfully made cuisines of Mexico, Central and South America (and everywhere else that is not Western Europe, for that matter!) which are no less complex, labor intensive and nuanced than “classical” fine dining. Incredible cooking and flavors from start to finish.
Food is great - good place to share dishes with friends. Just think it's a bit expensive for the tiny portions.
Omg! This place is amazing! Love all the yummy food! So good!
I was so hopeful about this restaurant. It had a great menu and was close to my hotel. I wanted to like it but I can't. I had so many better meals for less money in LA during my trip. The queso was broken and tasted overly of tomatoes, the tortillas were underseasoned, the beats were literally just beets in a bowl with a sauce, the desert was so busy I had no idea what I was eating. The tamale was actually quite good and I would recommend it. Maybe you would have better luck ordering something else.
It was good. I wanted great! I went with high expectations which they did not reach. Service was outstanding. Portions were small. Masa dumplings could have been amazing, however were too salty as well as the broth, the chicken thigh...couldn't find the thighs, duck meatballs...sauce delicious, blue corn tortilla substantial, texture and flavor was fantastic, margaritas were perfect. I'll go back again and try for great.
Great food and lovely staff
very good food and ambiance but waitress was sub optimal
The food here is absolutely phenomenal. The only issue is how far the dollar gets you. We spent about $300 for 4 people and no one was full. However, every bite of all five items we ordered was perfect.
Great first time with a great server... Wait time was a little long but the food was worth the wait. My girlfriend had the special of the day, the short rib tostada (she actually had two) and it was amazing!!! I had the oxtail quesadilla and it was small, filling and very delicious... Hats off to the chef!!!
Everything was really good, but way too expensive for what the food is. A small bowl of broccoli for $20 doesn't make sense. Our bill was $230.00 for two people before tip. We eat out a lot and that's expensive. We had two cocktails each, shared one tamale, one salad and pork belly. I think for most people the price might be too much.
Small plates of non traditional recipes served family style. A wonderful food adventure.
Really good food! The lamb was amazing!!
New Mexican cuisine. To discover!
We had such an amazing meal at Broken Spanish, we are already planning our next visit. The tostada was delicious and put together like a piece of art. The chicken with green mole was juicy, tender and the sauce was divine. The dumplings were a big hit for our son and the margaritas were perfection. Ambience and setting are warm and beautiful. We loved everything about our experience. The food is not cheap but the quality is extraordinary and it was worth every penny.
It’s loud. Portions are small. Server wasn’t that helpful. It ain’t cheap.
Our experience started out great, but ended poorly. The octopus was over cooked and the sauce was too vinegary. Except for that, the rest of the food and drinks were good. Somehow, our main order and beet salad seemed to have gotten dropped and there was a sizable gap before our chicharrónes came and we finally asked the waitress to 86 the beet salad. We went from having lots of time to having to race to our movie afterwards.
After an unfortunate situation where they gave our table to another party by mistake we had a wonderful evening.
Awesome. Food was phenomenal. New favorite date place
Stop in LA, in transit to Beijing just for try the chicharrón. Definitely worthy. Great service, good selection of spirits and beer. We will stop next Saturday again, going back to Rochester NY. The whole menu is well constructed, excellent for sharing with your friends.
For the food yes, everything else not so much. We had reservations at 6:30 & were out by 7:15. Our appetizers came before our drinks. The food was great but it felt like they were rushing us out from the moment we walked in. We had the queso fundido, the retried lentils and the barabacoa & it was all great & tasty! Our favorite was the barbacoa. Downside is that they charge you $7 dollars for 5 tortillas & there were 4 of us so we ended up paying $14 for additional tortillas 😑. Not very happy about that. Personally it felt like it was too pricey for the amount of food you get.
Food was tasty. Service was super friendly and attentive all around. Place is pricey. $18 a shot for a $35 bottle of casa noble tequila is pretty steep. Short rib was $40??? You won’t see that anywhere else.
Loved the lamb tamale!
Ok experience. Wait staff could have been better that night
The cocktails were great and the food was tasty. I would certainly visit again.
Quality did not come with the cost. Slaw was so salty it was totally inedible, and left the table untouched. Birria was $39 for a small portion of meat with beans...definitely not worth the cost. Drinks were the highlight of the night.
The prices are extremely high for some of the dishes oh, such as the tamales. The chicken dish I can't remember the name of it with the red sauce was mediocre. The potatoes we're outstanding. Overall the service was fantastic staff friendly and that would draw me back, but the prices are entirely too high. I found myself not getting a drink because that pretty much would have priced me out.
The experience was great overall but the food option was limited. There were no sides to accompany the main dishes.
