Had a wonderful birthday celebration tonight at Cedar. Food was excellent. Favorite dishes included the lamb chops and the crab stuffed ravioli topped with lobster. The ravioli seemed to be stuffed with a whole crab cake, with no filler! Just delicious. Cocktails were lovely and not overpriced. Service was fantastic. Our server was friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Noise level did not require us to shout for 6 of us to hear each other. Overall we all agreed it was a terrific restaurant and we look forward to returning.
A hidden gem!
Wonderful selection of vegan and nonvegan dishes. Had pretheater menu with wine pairing. Was all quite excellent except for small size porings on the wines given the cost of the pairings.
This is the perfect place for a romantic dinner, special occasion, or a meal before or after a play. It's ideally situated near the Metro the Smithsonian Portrait Gallery, Verizon Center, and National Building Museum. The menu is pricey; this is not for budget diners. But if you're trying to impress someone, then this is a good choice.
Served the wrong entree — then forgot a side on the correct entree — forgot the steak knife — Bad server — coat check people kept coming so seating took awhile.
I really love Cedar because my husband is a vegan and I am not and they offer a full menu for both and the both menus are excellent! The service is excellent. The ambiance is very pleasant. The prices are good and it’s close to the theatres so a great pre-theatre dinner which is usually when we go!
The waitress, ambiance, presentation and dinner were fantastic! My co-workers and I were headed to a play at the Fords Theater and decided to try Cedars for the 1st time for dinner. Best decision ever!!
Cedar offered a lot of potential that was not realized. We were in the restaurant for 10 minutes before we were waited on. My wife ordered an ice tea which never arrived at the table. From there it took another 35 minutes for them to deliver a steak sandwich and a burger; but up our lunches arrival at the table, we were not visited by the waiter at all and he seemed to be avoiding eye contact, so we could not wave him over to understand the delay. When the food arrived, my salad was saturated in vinegarette, an item I specifically noted as an allergy item while ordering. The food was ok, but the steak was a bit fatty and gristly. As we were paying our check, the couple next to us stated that their order was incomplete as well; a side was not delivered. All in all, a very dissatisfying dining experience. We recommend going pretty much anywhere else.
Very nice to find a restaurant that appeals to meat eaters as well as vegans! Very aware of dietary sensitivities and the food was delicious to boot!
We had dinner here prior to seeing a show at a nearby theatre. While the waitress was attentive and friendly, she was also clearly a bit harried and didn't really have the time to give any personal attention. My girlfriend ordered the mussels and salad as her meal, and I ordered the scallops as an appetizer with the rack of lamb for my meal. The first mistake occurred when the runner brought out her mussels as an appetizer even before my scallops. We sent the mussels back but there clearly had been a miscommunication with the kitchen. The scallops were delivered next and were pretty good- the highlight for my part of the meal. The rack of lamb was lack-luster, and for some reason (maybe the knife?) was really hard to cut. It had a bit more fat/sinew than I would have liked and the pistachio crust didn't really add anything to it. The veggies with the lamb were good though uninspired, and the potatoes were a bit over-whipped. Finally, we ordered the chocolate mousse square for dessert, but it wasn't a mousse at all. It was sort of a dense cake or something, and not very good all around. They should rename this to something else, our expectation was for a mousse, not whatever it was they served - even the waitress agreed it was not as advertised (wish she would have said so when we ordered). Ironically, I originally chose this restaurant because of the vegetarian options as we eat meat only rarely, but that whole part of the menu was uninspiring. It was an interesting experience, but I would not go back- there are too many solid dining options these days to waste on a so-so meal.
Tremendous value for a WIDE Vegan oriented ( not not exclusive) menu of very tasty options. Lovely wait staff. Very nice low key vibe. Prices are as realistic as they are rare in the Pen Quarter area for a comfortable, non-rushed atmosphere. Would highly recommend without hesitation.
Great food and service.
Their happy hour prices are great and their dinner vegan entrees are delicious.
We went for a birthday dinner. It was the best decision. Besides delicious food, both for meat eaters and vegetarians, the waitress was friendly, engaging, and helpful. She suggested some delicious options and then brought a surprise gift with our dessert. I've already told multiple people to go after our experience and will continue to do so.
Amazing service, great food, nice staff. Went for my sisters birthday and they wrote Happy Birthday on dessert plate in coco powder and were extremely nice and accommodating.
Went here last night to celebrate an early birthday. Drinks were fine but our server wasn’t great. Our friend arrived late, but waited over 15 minutes for our server to come over (it wasn’t crowded) to ask if she would like a drink. When the server did so, so told my friend that we had been waiting “so long” for her, which upset my friend because she waited 15 minutes without any service. The food was ok, the Vegan dishes were not great. In the price fix option, they had a vegan app but no vegan 2nd or 3rd course, which made no sense. When I asked if there was a vegan price fix, the waitress seems annoyed by the request to only come back a few minutes later with a vegan price fix that she could have easily brought out early. The vegan dishes were not what I expected, but you also shouldn’t have to beg to see options for a dietary restriction. The waitress honestly ruined the experience as we had a few other “off” moments, so we won’t be dining here again. Dinner took close to 3 hours, and other diners got their dishes way before we did and we ordered first. It’s clear once she realized we didn’t appreciate the service she wasn’t going to try anymore.
Start to finish service was great. Our server was a delightful woman with a million dollar smile. We had stuffed pheasant breast, seered tenderloin and duck fat fries. All were amazing.
Our only criticism is that the bar got a little loud. The atmosphere of the restaurant side is quiet, but a bar is a bar and the two share the same room. Maybe a 3/4 wall would help without closing anyone in. We will definitely go here every time in DC.
Great service, great food. 50 characters in length.
Exceptional service and had so many options for both vegans and non-vegans. Amazing food!
Excellent food from bread to dessert. One of the few restaurants in DC where you can talk without shouting and can hear what your companions say.
The food, ambience, and service were amazing. I came for a Saturday night date during restaurant week. The vegan offerings were delicious. Especially the pasta. I loved the food so much I came for brunch the next day. If you are vegan and looking for a delicious meal this is the spot for you
Charming "underground level" restaurant that serves up excellent vegan, vegetarian, and meat/fish recipes. Can't wait for their new expansion at ground level and outdoor seating in the summer. They have specials for theater goers and Washington DC Restaurant week. Compliments to the chefs and bartender. Near theaters, museums, DC arena, MetroRail/Bus/public transportation.
I enjoy eating here, because there are very few restaurants downtown that you can actually carry on a conversation without yelling at one another.
Food overall was wonderful but was a bit disappointed with the service.
Food was good although not exceptional. Atmosphere was a little odd (sort of upscale basement) and the service was friendly but slow and a little confused.
forgot our togo order and likely threw it away
We love Cedar so brought our out-of-town relatives. They raved about each course during restaurant week and as owners of a small winery were very impressed with the wine flight paired with each course selected. They have continued all weekend to comment on how delicious the food and wine were and the server who waited on us so attentively. Cedar also has a deal with a local parking garage to validate for $5 parking--a real bargain on hockey game nights.
Cedar is one of our favorite restaurants. The food and service are consistently excellent and the menu offers something for everyone (vegan and vegetarian included). Cedar is often overlooked because of it's located downstairs and isn't visible from the street. Yet, it's one of the best restaurants in DC!
It was restaurant week and my girlfriend and I wanted to try one of the participating restaurants. After some time of deliberation we agreed on Cedar’s. Upon entering the establishment the atmosphere felt very warm and welcoming. We were seated within minutes of our reservation time and from there the service remained exceptional. It was a pleasant evening filled with great food and service. We were more than satisfied with our choice.
Enjoyed ourselves but...the noise level is high. We had a hard time talking to each other. My eggs Benedict arrived cold. Perfectly cooked but cold. The elk sausage they brag on was dry, and the dish only had a few pieces. Disappointed. Staff is lovely. I really don’t like that it isn’t handicapped accessible at all. That’s not good. At all.
The food was great until I almost finished the creamy hash and found a long hair in my mouth when chewing.
Lots of vegan options, which was great because I had 2 vegans in our party.
Lamb chops were excellent, Brie was excellent, vegan entrees were excellent, vegan Caesar salad excellent, squash soup good.
Dessert wise, the vegan mousse was good and the other two were lacking. The gogi berry one was bordering on bad.
Overall excellent experience, as usually the 2 vegans are complaining about lack of food options 50% of the time.
Good ambiance. Excellent server, and great support staff. Our group drinks lots of wine and ridiculous amounts of water. We were always topped off.
We will return, and I do recommend it.
Loved the vegan restaurant week menu! It is always so refreshing to have options as a vegan and everything my husband I tried was delicious. My favorite was the veggie ravioli, but we both also loved the vegan caesar.
I have to say the Cedar Restaurant is by far one of the BEST restaurant experiences I had in the past few months. I highly recommend this restaurant, the food is delicious, absolutely delicious. The Cedar Restaurant is now one of my favorite restaurants in Washington, DC. I learned about the restaurant during DC Restaurant Week in January 2019, which is now on my list of great restaurant dinning, a win for sure.
Hidden treasure. Highly recommend for restaurant week. Cedar has complete vegan and non-vegan menus. We mixed the two for a thoroughly enjoyable meal without feeling uncomfortably full: arugula and mushroom salad, fish of the day (grilled trout and rockfish, moist and flakey) and sorbet for her, for me a winning pecan and blueberry vegan dessert that was alone worth the price of admission.
The butternut squash soup was a disappointment, feeling as if the seasoning was missing - or thinned out. It was sad, lacking the beautiful flavors I've come to expect from upscale elite chain restaurants found in Non DC areas.
The Lobster was cooked perfectly and the Fettucini noodles cooked al-dente to perfection.
The chocolate dessert was bitter - which may have been to design. But not enjoyable. And the ice cream appeared to be home made - that was perfect.
The staff was beyond pleasant and was the saving grace for an otherwise average experience.
Fantastic service and wonderful ambiance despite being in their temporary downstairs location. My friend and I were thoroughly impressed by the vegan 3-course meal we had during restaurant week; probably some of the best vegan food we've eaten in D.C. We'll definitely be back!
My guests loved their meals (mussels, quail, chicken); my trout special was fine but not exceptional. Service was slow though the restaurant was not busy, and the waiter sometimes didn't seem to be focused on the task at hand. If you like chocolate, the mousse on almond flour crust is very tasty.
We ate at this fabulous restaurant before going to the Warner Theater for a show. I called as they do not open until 5:30 (show at 7) and the manager was so calming and reassuring that we would not miss a minute of the show. He told us to come early by 15 minutes and so we did. We ordered drinks, dinner quickly after that and the waitress was as helpful, kind and accommodating as the manager was.
I don't know what I expected, but they surpassed whatever I had in mind for the evening. The food was as amazing as the staff - from vegan to gluten free to seriously yummy steak (mine obviously). We lingered over our entrees a bit too long and before we knew it the manager came to tell we needed to go, that he had packed up our desserts for us to enjoy after the show.
5 stars from us!
Food was not very well prepared and the service was quite slow.
Cedar never disappoints. My favorites DC restaurant. First, the flawless service. From the host, to the wait staff, to the way the bartender pitches in. Second, such a fun & delicious cocktail list! Third, they have gluten free and vegan options. Last, the food is fabulous. Cedar, it never misses!!
Great service and food. Great bartender. They had a very good pre-theater menu although
we ordered from the regular menu. My husband was very happy with the lamb chops and
I loved the vegan options. Bartender made a great French 75.
