What Insiders Are Saying
We can always rely on Cotogna in the Financial District for an excellent upscale Italian meal.
Just a great spot ... food, service, ambiance. Highly recommend it for date, just a dinner, business meal!
This place never fails to impress! Food is always lovely fresh and inventive. Yum!
Our service was exceptional! We celebrated my daughter‘s birthday and everyone made her feel so special from a birthday greeting at the door-to a custom placemat- to a birthday dessert. Delicious food, warm atmosphere —this is a “not to be missed restaurant! “
This is a great restaurant. We had some of the best spaghetti we ever had. Thanks for an unforgettable dinner.
Excellent food and service. Would happily eat here again.
The food here is always amazing, and there are still things I haven’t tried....because I want to eat what I had last time! The quarters are a little close and it can get quite noisy. Great place for a yummy dinner with friends.
Refined Italian cuisine of great finesse. Wonderful Sunday Night Supper experience.
We would eat here every week but resevations are difficult to get. Food is...WOW! I had picked a dish thinking it was one thing but turned out to be something completely different and totally loved it!!! Can’t go wrong with anything on the menu!!!
Service was amazing. Anna our waitress was absolutely lovely and had a lot of great recommendations about the menu. The food was delicious - everything we ordered was out of this world amazing!!! I love this place!
They sat us near the door. Incoming people loomed over us, talking and jostling for our entire meal. The layout of that corner of the restaurant is terrible.
as always cotogna is superb in every way
Love this place. Creative delicious food, beet salad, pasta, pork chop, service that’s on point, Leo was our server, and a casual environment that’s also elegant at the same time
We were very excited to dine at Cotogna based on numerous recommendations and were very disappointed. The restaurant seemed to be having an off night. We waited almost 90 minutes for our food. We were visibly frustrated and they did not even offer us some bread. Our waiter was frustrated but instead of trying to make it better he just appeared more frustrated. The manager briefly stopped by to tell us our food would finally be out but clearly seemed overwhelmed. They did buy us dessert. The food was fine but not what we were expecting.
My husband and I were on a quick getaway to the San Francisco, we were able to snag an early reservation the same day after it came highly recommended by locals. Our server was friendly, attentive and helpful. Would love to go back next time in San Francisco to try more of the menu.
Let me start by saying that I have eaten at Cotogna many times and love it. It is one of my go-to places. And the meal I just had there overall was very good. But I have two small complaints.
One is that the quantities of wine poured were completely inconsistent; I got a very large glass of red, my partner got a quite small glass of white, probably half the volume of the red. Very easy to see; the height of the wine in the glasses was identical, but the width of the red glass was much larger than the white glass, so a very different pour. Even our waiter thought it was odd.
Second, I had the wagyu beef main. I've had lots of wagyu beef in my life, but this was quite tough, in fact almost impossible to cut without a sharp knife. Tasty flavor, well presented, just surprisingly tough.
I'm not trying to scare anyone away from Cotogna. This is a terrific restaurant. Usually flawless. A bit off this time.
Best dinner I've had in SF! The service was so good and the atmosphere was cozy and special. The trout was outstanding and perfectly cooked.
The menu never fails to amaze us
The pizza is still the best in SF
Overpriced for what you get. We had the prosciutto with Gorgonzola and a fried gnoco, that was totally flavorless. Only one of the pastas (out of two) was good. Wine list is limited and only by the glass (at an Italian restaurant?!). Service was very slow. Drinks and food would come late. Would not return. Would not recommend it.
Cotogna has been our "go to" place since it opened. We love the friendly staff, the casual ambiance and the terrific not your usual Italian food. The wine list has some excellent choices by glass or bottle and what could be more fun than watching the ballet that occurs in front of the wood burning pizza oven and grill. Once in a while you can enjoy a pig being roasted in front of you and enjoy its succulent meat(unless you are vegetarian and there are plenty of good choices for your too)!
Anxious to try the new Wine Bar opening soon
Cotogna came highly recommedned by two different friends who live in SF. It exceeded my expectations and delivered across the board. Great food, great cocktails, fantastic wine list, friendly service, informal atmosphere and everything one could as for in a dining experience. This is the type of restaurant I am happy to return to again and again.
So disappointing. We go to Cotogna 3-4 times a year. It is our all time favorite SF restaurant, until now. After amazing cocktails at the bar, everything went downhill. We had to wait 35 mins for our table which was crazy. The dishes we love tasted mediocre from pasta to dessert. Service was so-so, not stellar and tasteful as it has been in the past. Both of us felt the same about the whole experience. It can’t be because it’s the holidays. That’s no excuse. The restaurant was half empty all night and it was a Saturday. I hope this isn’t how things are going to stay at Cotogna. It’s a very special place.
This was not our first time eating at Cotogna, and we really like the food here. But, on this occasion, I was a bit disappointed with the margarita pizza ($20): almost no cheese and the tomato sauce was not spread around the entire pizza; so it was like eating bread--but a very good bread.
The Fried Chicken ($24) was amazing, ten out of ten; the Beet and Apple Salad was also very good.
If you are a couple you will most likely get banquet seating, which is not my favorite. However on this occasion we met a very nice couple who sat next to us and we had a lovely conversation.
Bottom Line! We will eat at Cotagna again, but have them beef up the pizza a bit.
The food was delicious. The pizza was wonderful. Vert tasty and light. The olive oil was beautifully refined. The deserts were great. The service was spot on.
Everything was wonderful. The only recommendation would be to not have the tables so close together.
great cuisine and service!!
one suggestion .......wine pour could be improved and consistent amongst all diners
Absolutely fantastic as always! I loved the spaghetti with cauliflower and so did my husband and he doesn’t even like vegetables!! The servers were super warm and welcoming. A wonderful experience at a very busy time of year.
Chose this restaurant based on reviews on open table. Small energetic restaurant with nice choices on menu and excellent wine choices. Excellent staff. Enjoyed the table side gelato servce
After all the hype I wasn't very impressed with the restaurant. The service and ambiance are amazing but the food was not inspiring.
The food was fantastic! The server was spot on! Great atmosphere. Will go again.
Cotagna is one of my absolute favorite restaurants. Outstanding pizza and great wine! Lovely, rustic atmosphere in the beautiful Jackson Square area. Our server was gracious beyond belief. When our pizza took longer than she thought it should to come to the table, she offered to comp us the dessert of our choice. Not only was the toffee pudding unbelievably delicious, we also really appreciated her kind gesture - BIG tip!
Always great! I particularly thought the pasta with portobello mushrooms was special. The sauce was light and subtle. I would eat there every day if I could.
Table was not ready so they bought us a round of drinks and sent over a pizza. Very nice to accommodate in that way.
Food was excellent. Our server was great. I believe his name was Ryan. Nice selection of Italian wines by the glass.
it was cool
Several of the the dishes were missing that spark of flavor. Under-seasoned to bland. We had the beets with mozzarella, the spaghetti and other pasta dishes. The only dish that was flavorful was the pizza.
Nice atmosphere and wine selections. Service was fine
We were here for our 49th anniversary. There was a notation on the placemat and all greetd us and acknowledged us with warm wishes. The food was exceptional and the service was excellent. It was a lovely experience.
I live nearby and love coming here outside the rush lunch or dinner times, but they still are packed at 5pm. You need to reserve way ahead. But it is very much worth it, food is simple rustic Italian, delicious pizzas and pastas, and above all the gelato cart that is not on the menu. Portions are small for prices that are in the steep side, but this is SF... service is always good, our waitress was not the happiest but did her job.
Holiday in the City - wonderful ambiance & fantastic meal. The crab soup with homemade crackers & rigatoni alla Nonna Spencer were exceptional. Hubby loved the beet salad & grilled rabbit with beans. Apple quince tostada with browned butter gelato to share. Patrick makes a fantastic drink - The Philip! Very, very nice. Highly recommend. Definitely will be back for pizza ... & more!
The most incredible vegetarian carbonara romanesco pasta. Out of this world!
Love it every time
