The restaurant itself was nice and the atmosphere was laid back. The food wasn’t that great to me and the waitress left our table for long periods of time. Overall I’d go back again but it wouldn’t be a top choice on my list of places to frequent.
My husband and I took this opportunity to sneak in a date while our children enjoyed their Middle school’s Valentine’s Day dance.
We would’ve gone to BJ’s brew house, but hubby found this gem located 3 minutes from the children’s school and we liked the menu, so we booked a reservation.
We walked in and were instantly happy with our decision. The service was good, the server was patient and the food was exceptional!
I had the crab dip and OMGoodness was it amazing! The fried founder was off the charts too, my husband said his steak was one of the best he’d ever had and he crab was full of lump crab meat! We’ll definitely be back.
We went to EJ's twice in 3 days, so this review will be for both. Deidra was our excellent waitress! Between 3 of us we had the very good and spicy crab cake as well as fish and chips. Also, excellent homemade potato chips. The first night we ordered a dozen oysters which were delicious. We were so glad to be able to walk from the DoubleTree straight into EJ's. A big bonus. And lest I forget, there was a nice selection of local brews on draft. My kind of place.
The server was timely, personable and knew the menu. The manager was cordial and helpful. The food was over priced, with small portions. Out of 6 meals ordered 2 were received well, specifically the mussels and my sons linguine and clams. Everything else was way too salty, and lukewarm. All in all a dismal failure that I will not ever repeat again.
When we hit there we had to wait for the hostess to come back to the hostess stand to check us in. We waited for 15 minutes for the hostess to check us in. We had reservations. So we just went to the bar.
The food was incredible! I’d go back for the crab cakes and Mac and cheese. However, their check-in/reservation system makes no sense. We walked in and said we had a reservation for 2 for 7:30 and the hostess just wrote our name on a list and told us it would still be a wait. They didn’t have an electronic list for reservations so I’m not sure what the point of making one was, they clearly weren’t prepared for the reservations and the hostess also obviously had no idea which reservations were made for that night and when to expect them. The reservation situation was odd considering it was a Friday night and Valentines Day...I expected them to be more prepared. We ended up just sitting at the bar.
The service was shamefully disappointing. When we arrived there was no one attending the front or the hostess station. We waited somewhere between 5-10 mins just for the hostess to come back. She asked if we had a reservation and them asked our names. We told her our reservation name and she walked away without saying anything else to us. We then waited 30 mins before inquiring about our place in the queue. She showed us a hand written list that had several people ahead of us despite the fact that all the people who were already waiting when we arrived had already been seated AND we had reservations. As she presented her list to us she said "I'm getting to them as I get to them." I had already watched her manager reprimand her for not attending to two tables so that was the final straw. I didn't stick around to patronize a place where the staff was disrespectful and disorganized. So 0 stars for service and since I didn't get the meal I came for 0 stars for the food. Just don't even bother u less you like being disrespected.
The wait time was very long. It appears that they were short on staff.
Overall, a great experience. We were in town attending a hockey tournament. While certainly busy, given the Valentines Day buzz, the staff did a terrific job of meeting the needs of their guests. We were impressed with the food. Especially the crab cakes. We highly recommend the restaurant, a must if you’re in the area.
We came here for Valentine’s Day. When we got there the hostess said the wait would be 15-20 minutes because they were behind on their reservation list. Our reservation was at 6:30pm. We got seated about 10 minutes later. When we got seated our waiter didn’t show up for a while. When he did tend to us we just ordered our drinks and entrees. The waiter was nice but the service was very slow. They seemed really understaffed. So everything took longer than expected. Otherwise we had a good time and enjoyed our food. The crab imperial was delicious and I ate everything.
Third time here... your Cioppino keeps me coming back! I have had this same dish every time because I love your version so much! It is a bit pricier than some I have had elsewhere, but it’s absolutely delicious and a very generous pot portion! Also the large baguette that comes with it is perfect for soaking up the zesty broth- so don’t mind paying the price. My husband is a big fan of linguini with white clam sauce,so decided to try yours...but thought it was too buttery or bland, and no Italian cheese on it or offered. All in all, we like your casual atmosphere and offerings and will come back again.
We chose to dine at EJ's because of its location- just off I-95 and close to MD 200, and previous reviews were good. Friends were traveling on I -95, and MD 200 is convenient for us, so we met there for a Thursday night dinner. The food was amazing! Of course, we had to try the crab cakes, since they were award-winning, and they were delicious as promised. One of us is not a fish or seafood-lover, so he ordered the Caesar salad and a side of mac & cheese. Both were very tasty. The service was excellent, and we were allowed to stay at the table awhile, which was much appreciated.
This is a restaurant well worth a visit!
This was our first time coming here and I went solely of the OpenTable reviews. The restaurant was not very full for a Saturday night at all. We all enjoyed the food, my husband didn't like the crab cakes as much, the seasoning was an little different, we usually go to Timbuktu's since it's close to home. The service was excellent and the manager came around and greeted us during the meal. I hope they catch on more, it is definitely a hidden gem.
The fish was excellent and the raw oysters at $1 each was amazing. The only problem was the waiter we had messed up the order. The manager straightened things out. If you could clone the Manager and get rid of some of the wait staff the place would be Excellent

We live close to this gem. Found it thru a random search for seafood in the area. The entire experience was amazing. On arrival you'll note the place is very unassuming. The staff are friendly and attentive. The best crab cakes I've ever had! Definitely would return.

The crab cakes were really great and the Mac and cheese was yumm as well but the service.... not so much. Maybe more of a take out place.

Been there many times but not late in the evening. not so busy there but service was off. Waited 15 minutes for some drinks and water, food brought out all at once, minimal waiter involvement, so asked 2 different people twice for something. It was finally brought when not needed.
Food was good, good seafood choices....service needed improvement that day...

The crab cakes were absolutely FABULOUS. All lump crab and no filler whatsoever. Flavor was so on point! I can’t wait to return again, seriously! They tout best crab cake in MD, and I see why. If you check in on Yelp, you’ll receive a free 1/2 lb of steamed shrimp, so make sure to do that too. They’re the perfect texture and flavor. Good enough to eat alone or in just melted butter. Staff was also very friendly and personable. Our waiter, Grant, was extremely kind and patient. The manager, Bill, made sure to come over and greet our table to check on everything, as well as tell us the restaurant/family history. Definitely worth the visit. And like I said, get the crab cakes!!

This was our 1st time here. We saw good reviews and wanted some seafood. We had a late reservation on a work night so it was not crowded. We s had a reservation but were told we didn't but we didn't need one. The hostess did not bother to check but seated us promptly. We arrived 1.5 hours before closing and ordered oysters Rockefeller. A few moments later we were told the oyster bar was closed for the night so nothing with fresh oyster was available. This was what we came for so that is why the rating is 3. Had this been listed on the menu, in house adds or shared when we came in we'd have gone elsewhere. We settled on crab cake and ceasar salad. Both were fresh, seasoned well and tasted great. The sides, mixes veggies and baked potato were both toddler size (both fit in the palm of my hand) but since it was late we did not complain. We will come back at an earlier time to give it another try.
Great first visit to EJ’s. Server was attentive, but also very busy with other tables. The cream of crab soup was to die for. Couldn’t believe how much lump crab was in there. The server said they weren’t stingy with the crab and he was right. We were early enough to get the early bird specials. Fried shrimp and fried flounder were lightly breaded and tasty. The hush puppies were only so-so. Not what we expected or are used too. Overall a very nice experience and we will be back to try other entrees.
The crab cakes were wonderful! Also loved the cream of crab soup. My husband also liked everything he had. I only gave it 4 stars for ambiance because it lacks a “wow” feeling and is just simply, nice. I read about the crab cakes on a Burtonsville Facebook page. We live in the area and didn’t even know you were there (we had been to the restaurants before you however) soooo maybe more advertising or somehow getting your name out there would be a good idea! I will definitely tell people about you!
Their oysters on the half shell and cream of crab soup were excellent. My husband’s soup had big pieces of lump crab meat. I would gladly go back there just for that. Their complementary house made potato chips are the best I’ve ever had. I must add, however, that they got a bit carried away with the use of black pepper. I would go back there to have my fresh rockfish, I would not choose the sautéed kale as a side. The little flecks of red pepper were visible and plentiful in it and although the kale tasted delicious it was too peppery for someone who cannot tolerate pepper. I would recommend that they cut back on the use of pepper and let people add their own. All of the staff that we had contact with what extremely pleasant. Management staff kept checking on whether we were happy, as well as the servers did the same. We are definitely planning to go up there.
We went there for the award winning crab cakes which were amazing! Several of us decided to have the surf and turf and we’re equally pleased with the filets. They were cooked absolutely perfect which is a hard to get when you order Med Rare. They came out with a warm red center - perfection!

Yes, the crab cake was great and decent size. Crab soup tasty. It can be a bit noisy there but it was late so the crowd had thinned. Baked potato has plenty of stuffing. Salad so so. A bit pricey overall but worth it. They have a good raw bar for those who would indulge. Service was okay, not too attentive at first, waited a bit for the drinks.
Food was good but service needs serious improvement. Been there 3x in last 6 months, but service never gets better. Too expensive to have such poor service
Our server was great. It came down to bad preparation of the food. Food was overly seasoned drowning out the seafood. The crab and artechoke dip appetizer had a weird cottage cheesy texture and flavor with no resemblance to seafood.
I have never in my life seen crab imperial with a brownish runny sauce, not buttery as most are. The crab cakes had so much seasoning that they were in edible. Lastly, how does anybody mess up a hush puppy! The after taste was indescribable. The sad thing is, we took my son here to celebrate his birthday. I should have gone with my gut and left after I had to send back the appetizer. Bottom line:

We had 9 people at 2 long tables. We were next to the windows and we were able to have conversations with most of everyone except the people at the end. We thought that was pretty good.
This is kind of a yes and no. I feel that it is a bit over priced in some areas and not others. I went for the crab cake which was terrific with little filler. It was served with high baked potato and fish vegetable. I also noted that they had early bird special till 5:30 for under $10 so they were a bargain. Go for the crab cake !

From the host, to the servers, to the staff, it was one of the best experiences I've had. My daughters loved the place.
It was a Mother’s Day dinner and the food and service was excellent!
The service and customer service was excellent. Fish was a little undercooked and the hush puppies a little overcooked. The salad was fresh and the ambiance was great. Clean restaurant, restrooms and parking lot. Large screen TVs and nice music. Just wish the fish was better.

Food was delicious. Maryland crab cakes full of crab meat. Rock bass was white and flaky and tasty. Key lime pie tangy and creamy. Even their home-made chips were good. Restaurant a bit out of the way but worth the drive.
