I went to the Sunday plant based brunch. It was one of my favorite meals I’ve ever had! I’m a vegetarian, not having to check the food I ate was phenomenal! Mt daughter, who isn’t a vegetarian, loved it just as much. We met the chef as we walked in, he was a fantastic host, his energy made me excited to be there. The location is beautiful and the wait staff very nice and helpful. Can’t wait to go back!

It was their first night and it showed...badly. When I arrived there was loud music playing. I thought I had entered a sports bar instead of a good restaurant. The staff was young and seemed more interested in interacting with the younger customers than in satisfying the older clientele. I was shown to a table with wooden folding chairs. (I later learned they were hired for opening night. A big mistake. They should have gotten something better.) After getting up and seeing open tables, I asked for something else. I was shown to an alcove with padded seating. It was much better. It then took me two emphatic requests to have the raucous music turned down--something that happened only after I asked an older employee. The food came out--just barely warm. It could have been much better if it were hot. They did have the nice touch of grilled oysters as a gratis item. Our overworked waiter was friendly and responsive, but he needs to work on his English. Given the problems I thought the final tab was on the expensive side. And here they need to decide what they will be: a fine restaurant or a noisy sports bar. You can't have both. But what they do with a bit more work could determine if they will be a nice place, or just another eatery with a loud TV.

I sent this message directly to management a month ago and received no reply. It is an important evening for us to spend so much money on a meal and we saved for it and were very careful in our selection of where we wanted to go. We chose your restaurant based on your posted menu which promised a pasta dish that was creamy corn and shiitake. We got eggplant and a tomato ragu. We were also promised hen of the woods and bok choy. We got maybe a tiny sliver of hen of the woods but mostly what seemed like trumpet. And I didn’t see any bok choy. These may seem like small matters but for vegans these are delicacies we treasure and look forward to having prepared by professionals. When the changes weren’t even acknowledged, and our trumpets or maybe oysters were presented to us as hen of the woods we were surprised. The butternut squash soup was a real delight.

Was disappointed with my food. Bland fried artichokes tasted like flour-y mush. Swordfish was beautifully prepared but skimpy and possibly had been frozen. Veggies were okay. On the other hand, my friend said her fried tomatoes and beef were very good. Service was excellent and staff was very helpful. That could not have been any better. Front curtain was drawn and our table in the middle of the inside floor seemed dim. Martini was excellent.

My wife and I went for Restaurant Week DC. My wife started with house made fusilli pasta with sweet corn coulis, shitake mushrooms, and roasted sweet peppers. She loved it as did I with my shrimp and grits. Shrimp was very flavorful and perfectly cooked. Grits were buttery and creamy. Main course for her was the BBQ salmon filet with sweet corn succotash, also delicious. Mine was the hanger steak with onions, potatoes, and some French green beans. The waiter said the chef recommended "medium rare" which I accepted. It arrived tasting like charcoal, very tough, and clearly well done. The waiter quickly replaced the entree with perfectly cooked medium rare meat which was tender and flavorful. For dessert, we both had the chocolate lava cake with ice cream and raspberry coulis. It was an excellent way to end a very enjoyable meal. Had not the cook ruined the steak on his first attempt, I would have given Equinox 5 stars. The waiter was excellent, attentive, and responsive. The bread with tapenade and olive oil was as good as it gets.

The dead shrubbery on the patio gave me pause and proved a harbinger of things to come. The drinks were weak, the shrimp and grits tasteless and the hanger steak was tough and difficult to cut, let alone chew. Only the carrot cake for desert was worthy of the once highly reputed chef. The very large rat that seemed to have the run of the patio put a capper on the evening. How the mighty have fallen!

I hate leaving bad reviews for restaurants, especially when they are working so hard to come back from Covid. However, in this case, it is easy to leave a bad review because it is evident that this place isn’t trying at all. The food was terrible. Where to begin. We ordered wine, which was turned, a ‘21 bottle of Sauvignon Blanc should’ve been good but not this swill. The artichoke was deep fried with no flavor at all; none. Hard to tell if it was even artichoke or deep fried cotton balls. The octopus was mushy; I’ve never had mushy octopus. The entrees for table were less than to be desired; the scallops were overcooked, the duck was overcooked and fatty, the salmon, honestly was fine, and the short ribs were short of meeting anyones expectations. Service was barely there even though the place was half empty, I can’t imagine why. The clincher was our party of five had 20% gratuity included. Nowhere and I mean nowhere was that indicated to be the case and when we politely asked, they said they weren’t aware exactly of the policy; they were aware enough to charge us the auto-gratuity. In a world where restaurants are struggling, people are getting tip-fatigue and are looking for value in quality fare, and good service, it’s hard to understand why this place is still open. It looks like it should’ve shut down the same time that Crockett and Tubbs had to roll down their pastel coat sleeves (for the younger crowd, that is a Miami Vice reference).

Food and service were excellent. Decor is outdated. Needs a spruce up. Also, it was dissappointing to have to use a QR code to order at a fine restaurant. There were seven of us starring at our phone to order, which is not what anyone wants to do when you go out to dinner and want to actually TALK to people and NOT look at a phone. But we were delighted with our server and the food. The vegan options were awesome.

The gazpacho was a treat, starting with its nontraditional yellow color. The salmon was somehow both moist and just flaky enough, with the accompanying vegetables adding some crunch. My companion's braised short ribs were outstanding -- firm and flavorful. The service was warm, pleasant and quick. A great place near the White House for an early dinner.

We've eaten at Equinox a couple of times (including Thanksgiving), and the food has always been excellent. It is one of our go-to places when we want a fine meal. Never a bad dish and the composition of flavors and presentation has always been spot on. Highly recommended.

Amazingly, this was our first visit to Equinox. The restaurant has been around for more than 20 years. We were seated in the garden room, which was not crowded and was quiet and comfortable. My wife and I each ordered the tasting menu with wine pairings. My wife ordered the plant-based menu and I ordered the "market" menu, which included some seafood and meat. We each tasted every dish. There was not a dud in the crowd. My wife and I both chose the gazpacho soup as our favorite dish. We very much liked the salmon and the short ribs as well. The wine pairings were very good as well, including many things I do not have in my own cellar.
