Founding Farmers - DC
While our restaurant is supplied by hundreds of family farms everywhere, that doesn’t mean we know every farm, and that doesn’t mean we never have to buy product from the traditional (corporate) supply chain, but it does mean we’re working hard to direct our purchasing dollars where it aligns with our values.
We’re serving the best food we can, made from scratch in our kitchens every day. Our innovative, American dishes are made primarily with pure ingredients honoring the farmers and their hard-earned bounty.
The restaurant is upscale casual, which welcomes business casual dress, and dress that would be appropriate in a nice restaurant; this includes jeans and athletic wear, and warm-weather clothing, including shorts.

the food is always good. I find the tables a bit close together for my liking, but given how crowded it always is, I get it.
Founding Farmers is fantastic! The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The food was excellent as were the drinks. We will be back!
It was our first time dining there and Leah took great care of us. My father didn’t enjoy his drink and she quickly got him another one and checked in often to make sure we enjoyed our meal. She was also knowledgeable and gave us great suggestions
It took forever for our server to take our order. Some of the food was cold when it finally came out. And the food was definitely not worth the price.
Very good! So busy. Definitely make a reservation which we luckily did. Our server was okay. Didn’t write anything down but I think he should have. Forgot to give us water, sugar, double checked our order on his way back. Def not a sea breaker because he was so busy. I don’t know if they were short staffed but it was crazy in there. Servers all seemed stressed. Great food, a little over priced. But overall would go again!
We had a wonderful brunch there during our DC family vacation. Everything was delicious especially the beignets and the thick cut bacon (Black Pepper Maple). The only thing I was disappointed was both kids ordered Chocolate Milk but the server said they were out of chocolate sauce.
Usually one of my favorite places to bring out of town guests to for Sunday brunch. Last Sunday they missed the mark. The food wasn’t up to par and the service was blah.
A friend visiting Washington recommend this restaurant and we are so glad we visited while we were there as well. Food was great, waiter was knowledgeable, and the atmosphere was so nice.
Had Saturday morning breakfast. Was very good. Gets busy after 1000AM so recommended seating before 900AM, or a reservation. Great atmosphere.
It’s worth the hype, but it’s not cheap! The food was good, but quite pricey for breakfast fare. $7.50 for 3 pieces of bacon was a wee bit much. Timing was the biggest issue we had. All of our food came out at one time. We’d ordered beignets for our “appetizer” but they came out with our breakfast entrees, so they were cold when we finally got to them.
I ordered the vanilla stuffed French Tost but it was waaaay too bready for me, very big pieces of bread. But my eggs with cheddar and my hash browns were great! Also, it was my husbands birthday and he got thenthick cut black pepper maple bacon and the beef pastrami hash and loved it. The plate practically looked licked clean. It was his birthday so that’s what matters most to me—he was happy. Also, he ordered a specialty cocktail and loved it (it had ginger and fresh cucumbers).
I will recommend rsvp ahead of time to cut down on the wait time. Excellent food. I will always return!!!
Very slow service. Food was decent. Super loud. Something is off with this restaurant, food is delivered by others than your server, which led to mistakes. Our server seemed catatonic.
Good food, but wouldn't call it exceptional. Had to wait 15 minutes to be seated while having made a reservation. Tasty cocktails and giant deserts! :D
Excellent, friendly service. Broad menu and good food.
I am from Los Angeles every visit I must eat at founding farmers in this great city. I enjoyed almost every part of the restaurant except our seating. I had a party of 7 and we were seated next to the front door. While others were waiting to be seated, they were standing, leaning and resting at our table. It was uncomfortable, but food and service was excellent.
This was our second time here in a week. Last Sunday we had an amazing breakfast (see separate review) and this past Friday we had an awesome dinner. Started with the cornbread skillet with honey butter and sea salt - delicious!!! Then we had shrimp and grits (outstanding) and rotisserie chicken (so tender). Ended the meal with the chocolate cake - OMG!!! It was mind blowing.... The cake was incredible - so moist and rich - the icing was crazy delicious... But the homemade ice cream - we’ll that made the amazing cake absolutely mind blowing. If you are in the area, you must come here. Breakfast, lunch or dinner - all are fantastic. Make a reservation in advance. If you are not a planner, wait for a table. It is worth it. I promise you will not be disappointed. Looking forward to returning to DC so we can eat here again.
Food was really good overall. Didn’t care for the “special” dessert. The waiter really pushed it hard, so we ordered it, then when we told him we didn’t care for it, he said “I guess you should just pass it around the table.” Really?! We spent over $300 on this one meal...I thought the least he could do is take back the dessert that HE adamantly recommended. We’ll be back because the rest of the food was just that good (shrimp/lobster risotto gets 2 thumbs up), but I was disappointed with the dessert and the waiter’s response.
As usual waited for an additional 30 minutes for our table after our reservation time has passed. Our waiter was less enthusiastic and looked like it was not one of his good days. He came with water and quickly left the table without even greeting us. My compaction tried to say something, but he completely ignored her. We had a question on the wine list and he was't very helpful. In fact we were continuously trying cheer him up with some level of success.
Had a noon reservation and arrived on time. Place was mobbed. Gave our names and waited and waited. When we reminded them of our presence and of our reservation they counseled “patience” since “a lot of people showed up at noon.” I understand that but that’s why we made a reservation. They seated us at 12:20 with only a begrudged and half-hearted apology. They then escorted us to a dirty table that had not be bussed.I don’t think a 20 minute wait to be seated at lunch is remotely acceptable.
Food was good but my wife’s burger - which she has ordered medium well - came out medium rare, but she was hungry and ate it anyway.
Altogether a disappointing experience. But they seem to have plenty of business so I’m sure they won’t care about losing mine. But don’t go if you’re in any kind of hurry or expect your reservation will get you seated in a timely fashion.
Food and cocktails outstanding! Our waitress Kevrika was also awesome!
Only downside was very rude female bartender. We arrived early and had a few minutes before our table was ready so the Hostess recommended we get a drink at the bar while we waited. The bar was very full so we stood behind a gentleman waiting for a take out order. Bartender would not even look at us. Finally we got a cocktail menu from someone else and then I stood there with my credit card out hoping that would work. I finally just asked (without her looking at us) if we could please order a drink. She barely acknowledged us and said just a minute. 5-10 minutes went by and she did everything but take our drink order (talked to co workers, filled water glasses, cleaned off the bar). My husband even asked if this was one of those restaurants where being rude is part of the experience? I told him I didn't think so... Finally, I think the gentleman with the take out order felt bad for us so he offered me his seat and once I sat down she took our order. Not sure if it was worth the humiliation, but the cocktails were amazing...
The food here is great and our waitress was very nice. The only drawback is it is very crowded and busy and even with a reservation we had to wait 15 minutes to be seated and then service was slightly delayed due to our lovely waitress being overstretched. So - reservations essential! But the food and staff were great. A nice spot for a special occasion.
I always enjoy Founding Farmers. The service and food are excellent. On a few occasions (and this time), I have had the steak and enchiladas. I would highly recommend this dish. However, I can truly say that I nor anyone I have dined with have had a bad meal from this restaurant.
Excellent food and service. As usual with DC restaurants, it was loud. If you want to have a nice conversation, we recommend that you sit on the same side of the table.
Third time in the restaurant, and again a good experience. Only thing is some confusion with the reservation that caused a 15 minute delay in having my party accomodated, but the service was otherwise as good as always. I got the rotisserie chicken which is my favorite dish here. Simply cooked, tender, and tasty. Recommended, but better to reserve as the place is always crowded.
Made reservations and waited about 20 minutes past to be seated. The Clementine cocktail was amazing! Fried green tomatoes and dates were also very good. Split Prime Rib, green beans and Mac and cheese. Very good. Mac and cheese was just a 5 out of 10 for me. Great restaurant but make reservations.
Nice restaurant. Loved the food and atmosphere, however our server was either new or didn't care much about her job. Had to way her down for drinks, follow up on missing items and even had another server start assisting us, as she noticed we were waiting a long time.
Had to wait 25 min despite a reservation
Get the chicken and waffles!
The deviled eggs with seafood combination were divine!
Our server Adrian was outstanding! Very attentive to our needs and kept our water glasses and our bellies full! Food was also delicious
The food is excellent, but pricey. The staff were very kind and accommodating when we showed up a few minutes late for our reservation. There's a wide range of menu and drink options. The decor is contemporary and very tasteful.
A very popular restaurant with decent but not astonishing food. Nice service and atmosphere.
Excellent breakfast that is somehow more tasty, lighter and enjoyable than the standard breakfast fare. Fantastic coffee.
Wasn't successfully checked in. Waited 45 minutes when it was obvious a mistake had been made. Totally ruined the evening. Food was tasty, but far too salty. Our part of five was seated at a fourperson table. It was noisy, not energetic. Very disappointed.
This place is so popular!! Location is not special but worth the journey. Butternut squash ravioli was superb. As was the corn topped with paprika and cortilla cheese. Dwanye made us very welcome.
Excellent recovery on a Steak / great ambiance
The service and food was fantastic! Our server (Jeff or Jack) was great at making recommendations and very personable. We would definitely visit again.
A friend who frequents the Kennedy Center recommended this place as her go-to for pre-theater dining. The corn bread is outstanding and the fried chicken salad was delicious. Food arrives quickly, you can actually have a conversation since the noise level is low (we were seated upstairs), and the staff are efficient and friendly. I'll be back.
Loved the bananas foster waffles! Highly recommend making reservations because it is busy!
