Perfectly prepared dishes and cocktails in a cozy and comfortable setting. A special place to experience a true UWS neighborhood restaurant
Roast chicken which mashed potatoes. Glass of red and crime caramel to finish. Yum. Comfort food. Just what I needed.
We enjoyed our dinner and surroundings. The only drawback was due to the fact that we ate outdoors on the Broadway side of the restaurant. As a result, traffic noise was loud at dinnertime. That had nothing to do with the restaurant but rather our own choice of table. The tradeoff was a comfortable table with great service. We'd probably choose the same table again.
Quality of food has gone down. I remember it being much better. Brunch food was mediocre at best.
Thank you for taking the time to review French Roast. WE are certainly sorry to hear this, most feedback is just the opposite. May we asked what you had for Brunch ?
Excellent food and best waiter service in the UWS
I have eaten here many times. And the food was always ok. This time.the sandwiches for lunch were extremely salty and the Croque Monsieur had way too much cheese melted on the top. The bacon on the BLT was overcooked. We ate only half a sandwich.
Solid level of food and services. Happy hour 4-6PM menu is a good deal.
Wonderful waitress. Excellent burger.
I had a great burger and my wife loved her mussels. Always good!
We both had the short ribs entree, which was delicious. We couldn't quite finish our meals and asked to take the remainder home. When we departed, my friend forgot her bag, but our helpful waiter followed us and managed to reunite her with her bag just before we crossed Broadway.
The food was delicious, it had that something extra you can taste in every dish. Their restaurant week lunch menu was amazing. The salad alone was worth the price.
I'm a regular here at French Roast. Simple reason why: consistently great food and service.
Everything was wonderful! The hostess found the perfect space for our family’s needs and our server was beyond incredible. He was patient with both of our Children and engaged them in conversation. The only thing as wonderful as the service was the delicious food! Looking forward to coming back again soon!
The soup tasted a bit weird -- was it made with some dishwater? The hummus serving is miniscule. Nothing for vegetarians in Restaurant Week-- all entrees were meat or fish.
Well you caught us ...yes we make all of our soups with dishwater .....
Loved the food -- salade nicoise -- and the service. Asked for some bread and it was warm and delicious. My only complaint, and it is not the fault of French Roast, is the noise from the construction right across the street. I should have asked to be moved but I'm such a New Yorker that I "toughed it out!" Loved being able to "pay by phone!"
Understanding that restaurants are struggling and understaffed, the service was extremely slow to the point that we repeatedly had to ask for things such as the Restaurant Week menu (only the regular menu was provided) and then to the maitre'd for dessert and the check so that we would not be late. Salad was drenched with dressing that totally overwhelmed the greens. Everything else was OK.
Based on this experience, i would only return for lunch or brunch.
Meeting a friend. Sat outdoors. Pleasant and good food
Enjoyed outdoor dining and a wonderful meal. The menu is varied and the cooking is excellent!
Delicious meal and great service. Sean gave great suggestions. We were not disappointed by them.
Lovely evening to be people watching & enjoying the fine food outside. Consistent with the quality & service of past visits.
The quality of your menu remains top drawer! Thank you way alot!
My friends and I had an absolutely lovely dinner at French Roast last
night. I had a baby lettuce salad and a FR hamburger, cooked exactly the
way that I requested. Our server couldn't have been nicer, more efficient or
more accommodating. I'm happy to say that considering that it was a Monday
night the restaurant was packed!
Service could have been better. Customer service didn't seem important to our waiter.
Restaurant Week 2021
We went for brunch and both had classic eggs Benedict. Our first time two weekends ago, all was perfect! Eggs cooked to perfection, just enough and not too much hollandaise sauce, yummy hand cut French fries, and very good coffee. The service was also great. But this time, the eggs were a tiny bit runny, not enough sauce, small amount of salad and fries (as my husband d noticed the neighboring table got a larger helping of both!), and the service was very slow. But all that said, I really like it for brunch and we'll return.
What a lovely place to have brunch. We both ordered the classic eggs Benedict, and we agreed it was the best we’ve had in a very long time….perfectly poached eggs, just enough hollandaise sauce and toasty muffin (not soggy). The coffee was also very tasty. Service was great, very friendly staff. We I’ll definitely become regulars here.
Despite diners in the interior of the restaurant at less than half capacity, we had to ask several times for a new bottle of water for our table. It was unclear who on the waitstaff was in charge of our section.
A beautiful night in NYC for an early dinner. Great outdoor set up. Felt like we were in the streets of Paris. Restaurant Week Menu was delicious. Escargot, Steak Frites and Creme Brûlée and some delicious cocktails. Who could ask for more. The attentive friendly service made it even more special. There is a reason French Roast has been around for over 25 years . Their management / chef “ get it” .
Great lunch/brunch menu - better than dinner menu. Plenty of outdoor seating on Broadway/UWS.
The server only checked in after I’d finished my meal- which was just okay, somewhat pedestrian.
I met a friend for Sunday brunch. The omelette was very cheesy and had a good amount of ham. The only thing missing was some delicious French baguette which didn’t come with the meal. Coffees were good but a bit over priced. Overall a good meal
Restaurant Week food was poor. Salad and dessert bad, cheap, cheesburger was excellent.
Service, waitress horrible but the manager/hostess saved the day.
She was concerned and did her best. Waitress horrible, unattentive, never checked on food unless we asked. Took 2 hours, way too much time in between courses.
Kitchen was backed up but her bedside manner was nonexistent; no concern.
One of my favorites on the Upper West Side. Reliably good, unfussy French-inspired bistro food. Good serve and atmosphere.
We tried "French Roast" because of the Restaurant Week. We usually do not go that far up into the west side and the 80/90th streets restaurant scene. It was a good experience. Unpretentious bistro, efficient and fast service, food well prepared with quality products (the humus was OK, the mussels & french fries were great & the profiteroles tasty). Our waiter Darwin was very attentive. Thank you.
It was great. The attendants were friendly and helpful. Food was great! Slightly pricy, but on par with Manhattan average.
Lovely lunch with family—salads, soup, and some fantastic fries ☺️
I eat and drink at French Roast at least once a week. Yesterday I brought a friend and she loved the Mussells. She will now be a fan, just like me...
We dined outdoors at a side street table. The waiter was extremely attentive and helpful, always on top of refilling water and providing whatever we needed. The food was quite good (we had salads) -- but the added grilled chicken was a tad dry. The iced macchiato and iced fresh mint tea were very good. A good value and easy, local place to dine.
Excellent food and very good service. We enjoyed sitting outside.
