Gertrude's - Baltimore
Chef & owner John Shields, a Baltimore native who is a cookbook author and television cooking show host, named the restaurant after his grandmother, Gertrude Cleary, who taught him to cook as a child. Gertrude's dishes up a sophisticated regional menu of Chesapeake foods and traditions for lunch, dinner, and brunch using local, organic ingredients whenever possible.
The restaurant's interior, inspired by life on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, is beautiful & elegant yet comfortable. The wall of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the museum’s Sculpture Garden floods the open & airy dining room with natural light. During the warmer months, additional seats are available on the terrace surrounding a fountain and reflecting pool.
I didn’t know this place existed and now that I have found it I will definitely be back! The drinks were great. The food was delicious and I loved the cream of crab soup. I was dinning with a vegan friend and any place she can go to and not be limited to 1 item is amazing.
My husband and I celebrated our anniversary, this morning with Gertrude’s Brunch. Everything was wonderful - our server, Jeffrey was attentive - almost intuitive to our needs. Great and delicious food, beautiful atmosphere, attentive service - completely satisfied with lovely morning— glad we decided to try Gertrude’s! Will be back SOON!
Lots of senior citizens. Loud.
Enjoyed seafood salad, fresh and delicious! Wine too pricey at $18 glass
Gertrudes is a fantastic place to enjoy a date night, special event, or just to grab a bite to eat! The food was delicious, the place was packed but it wasn't noisy, the service is 5 star!
My sons birthday lunch was amazing
An outing to the Museum and lunch or dinner at Gertrude's is a regular choice when we are entertaining out of town guests or have a special occasion. Always good food and service. Love their seafood salad. It is one of my favorite restaurants for fine dinning in Baltimore.
Gertrude’s is a amazing space in the Baltimore Museum of Art with amazing, locally-sourced food. It is perfect for birthdays and other noteworthy events as well as a casual meal with friends.
Always a good experience! Have eaten there 3 times this month & hope I have another reason to go soon.
Everything about Gertrude's is top notch. We are so grateful they are at the BMA
Food and service were great. However, not being able to get separate checks was a great inconvenience. I can't think of another restaurant I have eaten at in the past year that has such a policy.
The bartender was also our server even though we were not in the bar area. It means that there were long waits when he did not check on us.
We eat here often, and the experience is usually good. This time was awful. We had a reservation, and the dining room was nearly empty. We asked for a corner or side table since we both have hearing deficiencies. We were shown to a banquette table, and we asked again if we could have one of the tables on the side. The hostess told us that those tables are reserved for “friends of the owner.” Huh. It went downhill from there. I was halfway through my salad when my entree was plopped down on the table. My husband ordered baked chicken and got fried. Shrimp and grits was a huge plate of grits with 4 smallish shrimp. We ordered bread pudding for dessert and got fruit crisp. And shortly after we arrived, a table of 12 people was seated right behind us, so any conversation was impossible. We couldn’t wait to get out of there, and we won’t hurry back.
My first time here and I had the best of service. From the waitress who seated us. To our waiter. The atmosphere was very welcoming and opened.
Gertrude’s is always delightful and as a pseudo-vegetarian it is a place a have a multitude of options and things I really want to eat. Food is always the highlight though the ambience, fabulous museum gift shop, sculpture garden and galleries are an added bonus.
The menu was appealing and the food was good, but was lukewarm and was delivered so fast that it was clear everything is premade, which is why is not hot.
wine by glass a bit expensive for moderate wineries
I had high hopes for this restaurant. But it didn't quite measure up to the hype. I have lived in Maryland almost half my life and I make a mean crab cake. Gertrude's crab cake is supposed to be all-lump, so I thought it might be more authentic than the one I make. Hmmm. It wasn't all lump (I know what lump crab looks and tastes like) and I might as well have eaten a Phillips crab cake. It was gummy and bitter tasting. I was very disappointed. The waitstaff are very nice, by the way. Very attentive but not overly in-your-face. The restaurant is nicely decorated, although, a little too dark. My husband's cod was very nicely cooked. I brought home his salad and it was great, even after being in the fridge overnight. The apple crostata was ok but there's not enough ice cream, which is the star of that dessert. And if you want to engage in conversation --- forget it --- the live music is too loud!
Gertrude’s never disappoint us....
We took friends from Boston....the food is excellent as are the drinks ....
The food is not just good but inventive .....
Food items were fresh and delicious. Service was fast and courteous.
It’s always a pleasure dining at Gertrude’s.
Our waiter was great and met all of our requests! Food was excellent and came promptly. We were also accommodated with our seating request.
It always a great experience and John, the owner always greets me when he is there. One of my favorites!
Get the crabmeat omelette!! Food is always delicious!
Definitely get the tater tots! And, the rockfish with crab imperial was amazing
Had GERTIES CRAB CAKE. Just ok very small
Gertrude's at the BMA is an old favorite but I haven't been there for a few years. Our reservation at noon on a Saturday was for three adults, two of whom use walkers and one of whom needs a gluten-free meal. The staff was very helpful and accommodating and the menu clearly listed the gluten-free options. Warm biscuits were served while we waited for our order. The country breakfast offered customizable options and the Brussels sprouts and bacon Eggs Benedict was very good. It was a particularly busy day and time and the restaurant was very noisy--a group of four couples nearby were very loud and the situation improved markedly when they left. We let our server know that we were attending a matinee theatre production and the service was prompt and we finished our meal with time to spare.
Great food. Good drinks
Beautiful setting, attentive service. The shrimp po boy was disappointing (to a New Orleans native) but the others enjoyed their food.
This was a comfortable setting for 5 for lunch and we could enjoy everyone's conversations. Our waiter was attentive and personable. The birthday dessert was sooo good!
Our dinners were great! Very tasty and ample portion sizes. Will be returning.
We had a great time at our last visit to Gertrudes for Sunday brunch. Chef John Shields came over to greet our table of 8 guests. The food, service, and live music was excellent as always!
A rainy Sunday brunch after seeing a wonderful exhibit at BMA was the perfect way to celebrate our anniversary. We were given a great table next to the window with strung lights and a bit of privacy. I appreciate the locally sourced ingredients on the menu. The portions are just right for normal eaters. My husband enjoyed the basket of little muffins and bisquits with cinnamon apple butter served at the start. The kitchen thoughtfully even added a candle and a chocolate banner with "Happy Anniversary" on our dessert. Little niceties like that made our special day just perfect.
Food and service were very good. The waiter was very attentive.
Gertrude's is very popular, so I always make my lunch reservation a few weeks in advance.
I live in the DC area. Taking a day trip to the BMA and Gertrude's every couple of months is a really pleasant day trip.
The food was presented as a work of art and was a taste treat as well. The experience was festive and the service exceptional. Thank you for a wonderful place to take my out of town guests.
Vegan crabcakes are INCREDIBLY good. Very romantic place and always great service
Consistently good. Friendly, attentive staff, well-prepared and locally sourced food in a great setting.
Gertrude's is always a very pleasant place to have a meal whether it be lunch or dinner. The setting is cheerful, the staff is always very well-trained, the prices are moderate and the food is always well-prepared. I have eaten at Gertrude's many times and have never been disappointed.
On a lovely day it is a delight to sit outside and enjoy the lovely fountain and foliage.
Atmosphere was lovely and the food delicious. Our party of 6 would definitely give Gertrude’s 5 stars.
Went for a birthday lunch by myself. Had the seafood salad with fried oysters. Food was good not outstanding. For 24 dollars the salad should have had more seafood. No one acknowledged my birthday despite me noting it on my reservation. It was busy and they may have overlooked it.
