A wonderful experience for both my friend and I. Kumiko was able to accommodate a shellfish allergy and still keep the essence of the tasting. Will book another tasting when I return to Chicago.

Kumiko is a Japanese bar every sense of the word and the food they have served has always reflected that. Their tasting menu is no different. Were there western influenced dishes? Certainly. But they balanced against the selection of seafood and trio of prawns seamlessly. The agnolotti was a highlight, and dessert was fantastic. And given the knowledge that is Japanese influenced there was only one risky bite as I suspect some diners would balk at eating a full prawn head. It's just different. But for the adventurous it was quite delicious. All in all a delightful dining experience and fabulous meal.

One of the best we've ever had. Everything we ate was delicious. And the drinks were some of the best tasting ones, could not recommend Kumiko enough. Highly suggest ordering the pickled items.

it’s the worst restaurant experience in Chicago. The food is very overpriced and quality is bad. The quantity is tiny tiny as even the waiter almost took our new plate. one menu is around 35 bucks but it’s truly disappointing. If the food is good, I wouldn’t care for the price too much but food is so bad (not healthy as well) Embarrassing to call this as Japanese/Asian fusion food. Please be better……. this was the most pretentious place in Chicago, nobody looks happy and waiters are so rude. They do include 20% service fee mandatory. However, the service terrible. We spent more than 200bucks and it was truly waste of money.

Absolutely recommend this place. The bar is gorgeous, the food thoughtful and creative while still having elements of familiarity. My friend and I both had the tasting menu, and she did the cocktail pairing and myself the sake pairing. Highly recommend sitting at the bar - loved the presentation of courses and drinks and getting to have the bottles available to us to take in our drink pairings. Courses were paced just right, they were very accommodating to the one food restriction/request. The amount of food was just right. While the sake pours and cocktail servings are a little on the smaller side given the price, I appreciate that it gave balance to the meal and didn't leave us sloshed by the end of the meal. There is a time limit which is the only thing to keep in mind as the time can fly here with the transportive feel of the experience.

We've been trying to get to Kumiko for several years, ever since Julia Momose's book, The Way of the Cocktail, came out, and finally made it! Because we were pressed for time and have several food allergies, many of the food items were off-limits to us, so we tried only a handful of small plates, like the Japanese Potato Salad and the twice-fried chicken, both of which were delicious and unusual, and happily tweaked to accommodate our allergies. The cocktails we ordered, both specials to celebrate cherry blossom season, were amazing, complex, extremely well-balanced and expertly prepared using unusual/rare spirits with a specific flavor profile, and other ingredients. (I don't know if I could taste the contribution of each cocktail ingredient, but the end-result is what counts). They were also really expensive - mid $20's each - not quite The Aviary price range, but more expensive than any other restaurant we've explored. We thought they were worth it, but not everyone might agree. We were extremely impressed with everyone we came into contact with on the staff - all are friendly, welcoming, subdued, and have encyclopedic knowledge of ingredients, preparations and basically anything and everything you'd want to know about the food and cocktails featured at Kumiko. There is, of course, a tinge of pretension about it all, but Kumiko earns it! The Open Table ratings do not have a separate category for cocktails, but we would have rated them a 5 for sure.

We initially booked the tasting experience for two through OpenTable. It required payment upfront, which asked for a tip, but it turns out that they’re already included a 20% service charge, which was not made clear to me before I paid the additional 15%, making it a total of 35% in gratuities that I paid in the end. This part feels not at all transparent to the customers. After we got to the restaurant we were told the tasting menu we pre-paid was not available and had to be book 24h in advance (which was not mentioned prior to our booking through the app or through phone) so we had to switch to a la carte. Note: if you don’t do the tasting menu, there isn’t a lot of choice for food. The service could also be improved. Our server was not very attentive and we waited quite a bit after each request while the server was chatting away with other staff. This level of service was subpar given the price point; this would have been completely fine at a fast food restaurant or pizzeria, but if I’m paying $400 for two, I would expect better.

I'd heard nothing but good things about Kumiko for a while, and I can see why! The drinks, food, and service were all outstanding. The roasted sunchokes with whipped tofu and wasabi stand out as a unique and creative yet also undeniably delicious dish. The Unabridged was like cross between a whiskey sour and an espresso martini, another unexpected and very tasty creation. I will definitely be back.

Kumiko is best known in Chicago (and the world) as a bar. Technically, they describe it as a Japanese Dining Bar. With the addition of their tasting menu, Kumiko has evolved to one of Chicago's best restaurants -- with amazing crafted cocktails. Call it whatever you want. Just go. My wife and I went to Kumiko recently for the tasting menu (with saké pairings...cause we love saké). The meal was spectacular -- starting with a trio of bites: 1) raw scallop crudo, 2) a kampachi nigiri, 3) an oyster that was one of the best oyster bites we've every had. Second was a prawn set that raised the already lofty bar: 1) raw spot prawn, 2) blue prawn with torched lardo and 3) a pork gyoza-filled crispy prawn head (edible, like soft-shell crab). Making a crunchy gyoza with prawn shell in lieu of dumpling was genius. The menu kept on rising. All through the evening, expert and caring service guided our night. It was such a lovely evening. My point is that the food / glorious food at Kumiko is what Chicago should be talking about -- since we love our food in this town (hats off to duo chef team Alex and Josh). But, back to Bar Kumiko's claim to fame...the drinks. Yes, you must start with a cocktail at Kumiko. They were suberb of course, cause drinks are why Kumiko exists. But, my wife and I loved the perfectly paired saké. We learned about the range and versitility of saké and we learned about brewmasters in Japan that Julia and team love...and why. Food, drinks, service, atmosphere. Our night at Kumiko had it all. If you've been to Kumiko; go again. If you haven't been to Kumiko; go.

A must try for drinks, but the food left a lot to be desired. The drinks are expensive, but they have something for everyone, even though the whiskey option is limited they still make good drinks selections. The food; however, was some of the most salty food I have ever had. Would not recommend eating here, but a must try for drinks.

went there twice in a week, visited Chicago for vacation and my birthday. received a birthday card with staff signature, which was nice. first time sit at a table for 4, and 2nd time at bar for 2. Drinks are great, each very unique. I like the component flight. the only thing I wish would be better is the 1-hour time at the bar when I made the reservation. So I had to rush 6 drinks for 2 people in 1 hour to try the drinks I was curious of. Granted they did not kick me off the bar, but with gentle reminder the service time was up.

It’s simply the best. No one comes close to how inventive and delicious the cocktails are at Kumiko. My date and I opted for mostly Spirit-Free and you really don’t miss the booze. The food was incredible - don’t sleep on the potato salad - all around. We sat at the bar and received incredibly gracious service and loved watching the bartenders work with grace and precision. This was the second time we went to the restaurant for my birthday, and it was phenomenal. Overall. We were a little put off that we had to wait about a half hour past our reservation, but we understand that that's outside of the control of the restaurant. We appreciate that Delaney, went asked, recommended the yellow tail collar as an off menu item, and it was probably our most favorite dish of the night. We are sad that the Katsu Sando was off the menu, but the onigiri was a welcome alternative.

Overall it was a nice experience but probably won’t be returning. We were seated 10 minutes later then our reservation time and waited at the table for another 15min for someone to ask us if wanted to order. Knowing that we have only 90min reservation at least 30 minutes been wasted. When we finally got our drinks and food we had only 1h left and were kindly told that our time slot is up and the are people waiting for our seats.
