House Made Duck Confit
Escargots Bourguignonne classic style
Love that this place is still rocking... the food is medicre
Service was over-attented. It's amazing how that's a thing. What bugged us the most was how they kept reaching over us to grab or sit items when they could have went around and aside my friends. My friend turned 49 but they arranged the candles as 94 to top off everything. Lol. The food wasn't flavorful but the quality was good. I really appreciate the manager working with us with a few issues being brought up. He's a super guy 😊. We had a good time overall amongst ourselves but this is less likely a returning location.
I've dined outdoors several times over the last few months and have had very good experiences. This time I requested a corner table (I called the restaurant as well as added a note in my reservation), which we didn't get. There were corner tables available in the outdoors areas. Additionally, we were seated on the side street, not on Park Avenue South and the staff (maybe of other restaurants too) pulled multiple, large garbage dumper/bins along the sidewalk throughout the evening. Also, one of the waiters started taking down the tables around us while we were still eating. And they didn't have the heat fully up on the lamp over our table.
Those issues aside, the staff was attentive and we really enjoyed the food. And we were protected well from the rain even though we were outdoors.
A delightful French BISTRO in the friendly "corner saloon" style,
but all the traditional dishes are done really well- like OUTSTANDING
ESCARGOTS for instance. Both inside and outside service, gracious
Great outdoor dining spot, neighborhood favorite.
Glorified French themed ‘diner’ menu. Generous portions. Good value given it’s prime spot on Park. Attentive service.
Another nice evening here. Good wine, very good food, and very nice service. Looking forward to my next visit.
Been going here for a long time. The food and staff are top notch. Can't go wrong here.
We had a wonderful meal. Great servers, outdoor dining and authentic French food.
This is my favorite neighborhood hangout. I love the staff and the food and the space....
The service was attentive and the ambience, especially as we were in the street, was surprisingly good - quiet and protected. As to the food, three dishes were wonderful and one was quite disappointing.
My wife's salmon tartar was even better than the sashimi we had a few days before. The avocado mixed in with the fish was a masterful touch. My escargot was, and I am not exaggerating, perhaps the finest rendition of that standard French dish that I have ever
tasted. The escargot themselves were tender and tasty and the tiny breadcrumb were crisp and copious. But copious is not a strong enough description of the amount of melted butter which bathed the escargot. It took many slices of bread to sop up this golden elixir. I've eaten this dish in France many, many times. This iteration was the best!
Alas, the short ribs Bourguignon was very disappointing. The sauce was grainy from what must have been a thickening agent, the ribs, stringy and tough, the onions very few.
But three out of four isn't bad. I'll come again and order both the escargot and the salmon.
This place is never outstanding, but rather consistently good. Like your corner bistro! Friendly, attractive, tasty. Just what you want
Amazing food and Amazing service. I am french and the food was delicious and authentic. The service was also beyond.
let's get rid of the plexiglass partitions between tables - they are very limiting and do nothing
This was my second time there in about a month. They have a really good outdoor set up and we sat in the corner, which was extra warm. My friend really enjoyed his burger, especially since he hadn't had one in quite a while. The duck confit was also good although a little overcooked. I think the duck l'orange is the better of the duck dishes.
My only quibble is that they were supposed to do a little something for my friend's birthday (which they'd confirmed on the phone that day from the special instructions I'd put in my reservation) and they didn't do anything.
I'm so glad you're open for dining! I used to come here regularly when I lived in the city in the early 2000's. Things felt almost normal again! As usual the meal was delicious, service and ambiance excellent. I could pretend I was in France for a moment!
Food was okay. A bit cold with the doors open in middle of March. Fries from Mussels and fries looked and tasted old.
Food was disappointing -We just moved down from the UES and always enjoyed Cafe D’Alsace - the meal on Saturday didn’t even come close, sorry
Everything was good. Food and drink were fine. Service was okay.
Terrific food and a pretty good heat set up with us covered on three sides with lamps directly over the tables. Loved the duck and creme brulee!
Solid bistro, nice ambiance, good service. Big space for covid times.
I think everyone's food was good, but overall, L'Express missed the mark. Someone checked me in but didn't seat me. The waiter filled our (wine & champagne) glasses right to the brim. The music got loud requiring us to speak louder which was therefore riskier. There was only one bottle of each thing we ordered. Suddenly at 10pm we were told we had to leave. Seems like it would be easy to train the staff, stock the wine cellar, and give diners a 15 minute warning before closing.
I'm saying I wouldn't recommend to a friend but am hopeful it was just an off night.
L’Express has always been a favorite neighborhood spot and the restaurant has impressively adapted its outdoor-dining area to make Park Avenue South feel a little bit like a French street cafe. Outdoor dining is always at the mercy of weather and general NYC noise, but we were able to ignore the elements and enjoy the bistro fare we’ve missed so much.
The outdoor seating is great. The food is fine and reasonably priced. We did have to wait quite a while for service and to receive our orders but not egregiously long.
Great social distanced dining exoerience!
Staff was attentive but didn’t rush us. I had stake tartare- not too spicy/salty. My friend had salmon which she said was very good. The fries were not as crispy as I would had liked. Overall very pleasant experience
Brunch hours are noisy.... but that may be part of the fun
Our steaks were delicious. Mine was very tough though, had to really cut it. My boyfriend's cutlike butter though. We would most likely return.
Always a fantastic "go to" place with the plus of being 24 hours. L'Express is very consistently good- with pomme frittes to die for, and a great staff- wonderful old school NY meets old school Paris vibe.
Service was great, French onion and soup of the day were great, but burgers were lacking. Meat not seasoned at all unfortunately.
Love L’Express! We go there as often as possible!
Great V day dinner
Had a wonderful dining experience at L’Express. It gives you the feel of being in France with the close tables, the wonderful food, and invites you to be friendly to the people at the table next to you (like in Paris).
The only thing about our meal that I wish was better was that they were short staffed on Valentines day and our waitress was definitely overwhelmed. Otherwise, a wonderful experience and great food.
Couldn’t have had a more delightful and delicious Valentines Dinner!
LOVE THIS PLACE and always get the steak tartare entree! YUMMMMMM
Duck breast was on the menu. I ordered it...a duck leg was served. I should have sent it back, but it was a birthday and I didn’t want to make a fuss. My husband ordered steak tartar entree. It was the size of an appetizer.
The food was not good. I wouldn’t return or recommend it.
Our waitress was very nice, but she’s not the cook.
This is a perfect place for a drink after work with friends
Excellent service, very good food and ambiance, we could use a bit more light as diners were forced to use their cell phones to read the menu.
The food is always fantastic. But it was so noisy and chaotic that we couldn't hear our friends and couldn't have a good conversation.
The salmon burger special was very poor. The waiter was nice and attentive, but he spilled some of the wine when he poured it in my glass.
