"ingenious restaurant ... by delving into the past, it seems Sheehan has found his moment of triumph." -Bill Addison, Eater's Best New Restaurants in America
"irresistible small bites and Boston's best bread program" - Corby Kummer, Boston Magazine
"Loyal Nine is one of the most interesting restaurants in town" -Devra First, Boston Globe
East Coast Revival cuisine. Casual setting, shellfish + vegetable focused. Local craft beer from top brewers, 100% grower-producer wine list, craft cocktails. Large dining room good for large groups, private dining options, patio + garden.
Shared supper is great fun.
My (adult) daughter and I sat at the counter facing the kitchen and split about nine of the small plates. Every dish - every bite - was perfect. The dishes are creative, the components are fresh and locally sourced, the presentations are lovely and interesting, each dish works on its own and the menu works in a way to put together a coherent meal. The wait staff, and in the case of the kitchen counter, the kitchen staff, are knowledgeable, professional and friendly (and willing to answer all kinds of questions). The cocktail list is fun, pairs well with the food and the drinks are well-executed. The wine list is filled with unusual and tasty bottles and glasses at reasonable prices. This is one of my very favorite restaurants in Boston.
Super tasty and creative dishes, maybe not a great value, but definitely good eating.
The food is good but too complicated and trying to be innovative which moves the focus to the melange of ingredients and mode of preparation rather than the essential flavors of the food. The restaurant was very loud. The bathrooms were not very clean.
Very polite, funny and accommodating service. Too bad the chicken was lukewarm and overcooked even after having sent it back to the kitchen. Atmosphere was wonderful and dessert was perfect.
Great place, great atmosphere, amazing food. We had a wonderful time.
We love Loyal Nine. Fabulous food, wonderfully creative, colonial-inspired menu, superb service. We took our son and two of his friends out for a birthday meal and had such fun sharing all of the wonderful vegetable sharing dishes as well as several main course dishes. Bravo Loyal Nine!
Loyal Nine is a very special place. Chef Marc has a very unique, thoughtful, and creative approach to truly traditional (and delicious) New England cuisine. The Shared Supper always delights and satisfies, but remarkably unlike other tasting menus, the diner walks away feeling a fullness and satisfaction (they really take care of you with plenty of family style deliciousness) without heaviness. The staff is also comprised of some of the most deeply hospitable, knowledgeable, and caring humans. It's one of my favorite restaurants in Boston/Cambridge, without a doubt.
Excellent food, fine service. Quite noisy, plus music which was on the loud and bombastic side.
Service was pretty bad. No one checked on us. But the food was good, though expensive for what you get. No Pina colada at the bar was irritating.
Loyal Nine never ever disappoints! Soo many delicious dishes that are always bright, seasonal, and creative. Cocktails, beer and wine lists are extensive. Staff are always welcoming and very knowledgeable re: menu items and recommendations. It’s a great spot for a low-key date night or a fun night out with friends.
What a great place to eat and wonderful experience. The food was absolutely amazing. The servers made sure all our needs were well taken care of and were well educated on the food and options. We will definitely be returning when were are close to this area again and will recommend this to anyone we know in that area.
We met a friend for a dinner on a Tuesday night and thoroughly enjoyed out time. We chose a la carte from the menu. Each of the seven small plates were fabulous. We had a hard time choosing favorites. Loved the carrots, which were sweet and smoky with just a little bite. The roast chicken was tasty. You can't go wrong with the duck and pork belly. Rounded out the meal with an amazing chocolate chess pie.
The atmosphere is a casual and rustic and not pretentious at all. I wish there were more people in the house. It was a little too quiet. Why wasn't it packed out? Maybe it's a Tuesday night thing.
The noise was so defining that we had to shout while sitting across from one another at a small table The food tried to hard; Sunchokes with tiny spots of sea urchin and several chips of chicken skin -- an inexplicable combination. The wine list is inexpensive and excellent, served by a knowledgable sommelier.
Originally wanted to check out the café but ultimately decided to drop by for dinner. I’m glad I did because the small plates were delicious and filling. Hope to come back again!
There were very few patrons the night we went but still it took 35 minutes to get our first drinks. There was only one server taking orders. The charcuterie plate was disappointingly fatty. The steel cut oat dish stood out along with the cauliflower and cheddar fritters. I wouldn't order any of the other 6 dishes again.
Really good food and an attentive staff. The menu had a nice mix of veg friendly dishes, and everything tasted fresh. The brownie was to die for!
We've been here a few times and had yet another great experience. The food is fantastic - very creative and yummy, with very appealing presentation, too. Lila was our server for the third or fourth time, and as always, she was wonderful!
The shared supper at Loyal 9 was perfect with friends out celebrating birthdays. The servers were really knowledgeably about the wines and suggested pairings based on upcoming plates and very happy with the allergen awareness, letting me know what plates I could or could not have. Food was fabulous, highly recommend!!
Delicious and original food and wine, friendly and spontaneous service, nice ambiance in upcoming neighborhood. On the expensive side.
The food and coffee was amazing! But we had very slow service and were left waiting several times (to be seated, to order, to get the check, etc). Thankfully we were in no rush and overall still had a great experience!
Interesting concept in Cambridge - "vintage" dining in a simple but homely space. Our drinks were very good, and the food was well prepare and tasty. The ingredients and preparations were not run of the mill!
Service was outstanding and attentive. I really liked the menu design + interior design. Loved the wooden tables as well as the nice plates. For food, my two friends and I ordered these dishes: honey roasted kabocha squash, fried hakurei turnips, thyme roasted carrots, roast chicken, grilled pork ribs and walnut + cranberry pie for dessert. Everything was amazing, but my favorite dish by far were the grilled pork ribs. It was so flavorful and fall-off-the-bone delicious!! Would totally order that again. Highly recommend this place!
We had gone for Valentine’s Day dinner. This time they missed the mark. The food was just blah, the menu was poorly setup. We asked for no shellfish for my date and they still had a very seafood heavy menu without fish. There were no rabbit or quail or even turkey or chicken options.
The restaurant has been good for non special day dinners, I’m thinking they are not very well setup for that.
Interesting and delicious food. Exciting to try new things. chocolate Brewis was amazing!
The food was good, just too salty. The turnips were completely over salted almost to the point of being inedible. The chicken was better, but still too salty. Experience would have been better with less salt.
Amazing experience! Service and ambiance were perfect to stimulate good conversation and overall enjoyment
Exquisite tasting menu at a very reasonable price. We left stuffed with very happy tummies!
Cocktails on point; food innovative and satisfying; service friendly and sufficiently efficient. A great spot!
It was really bad. Even the drinks were watery. The food was overily smoked and all the food had a very similar, unappealing flavor. The food is colonial inspired and that sounds fun .... but it was not.
Thoughtful, creative, satisfying and delicious? Bar none, Loyal Nine is the top fine dining experience I have had in the past few years. Instead of picking starters and entrees, we embraced the supper menu, an omakase of their reimagined colonial menu for my husband's 55th birthday celebration. They accommodated his food allergies beautifully. Standouts included the hake, duck, beans, black bass, charcuterie and sunchokes. And while it is food for thought, you don't have to think if you don't want to. It's just yummy. Loyal Nine gives any city's top tier tasting menu a run for their money.
Had a foodie friend visiting from Portland, Oregon so sought out a restaurant that seemed to offer unique and creative food options. Although the food was OK, unfortunately not worth the price. Small servings, as indicated, but really nothing exceptional or noteworthy in terms of flavour. Nothing was bad, but certainly expected far more for the price and the reviews. We ordered a good variety of appetizers, vegetables and meat options and all were meh. Last but not least, terrible coffee served after the meal.
For such expensive prices, the food was mediocre at best, and often times just not tasty. It was constantly underseasoned, with bizarre pairings (cooked brussel sprouts, apples, and raw sea bass?). The only good dish was dessert of a pear crumble. Nothing about the dinner was great. And certainly not for the $60 price tag. Service was a delight, however, and the cocktails were nice.
Really a fantastic meal. Everything was really well done, was tasty and intriguing. Service was great as well.
Great service, comfortable ambiance and wonderful food!
We were very underwhelmed by every item we ordered. It took them about 25 minutes to take our food order after they sat us down. I think they want you to take your time there, they serve each dish one at a time, even though its's small plates style.
very good food, and great service, but if you are hungry or have a big appetite, you will spend a lot of money on many small plates.
Amazing meal as always
Extremely creative chef. Amazing beer selection and the food was delivered quickly. No complaints. Will definitely be back
