Matchbox - Pentagon City
Spanning two levels, with a mezzanine that accommodates up to 150 hungry guests, there’s plenty of space for intimate dinners, large parties and get-togethers. Have a seat at the airy 8-seat pizza bar where bubbling, thin-crust pizzas make their debut, or wave to the people below from a private booth in the sky. It’s hard to ignore the industrial glass and steel elevator, or feel the warm, primal fires from two wood-burning ovens.
Exposed pipes, warm reclaimed timber walls, cool concrete and steel make for an attractive place to gather.
Fun, handcrafted signature cocktails and a unique selection from award-winning local brewers and winemakers complete an experience you won’t find anywhere else.
Friday: 11:00 - 11:30pm
Saturday: 10:00am - 11:30pm
Sunday: 10:00am - 10:30pm
This is a fun, kid-friendly pizza joint, with great brick oven pizza and a good beer selection (for the adults. of course!).
Our waitress was outstanding. I hope that we have her again when we dine again. The pizza (meat lovers) and the bbq burger were amazing.
I frequent various Matchboxes but mainly the one in Chinatown. It was good but they are starting to feel upper-end chain trendy. But still a good rock solid predictable experience.
I love Matchbox and this one is very convenient for dining in the DC area. This chain is never a disappointment.
Service was great, food delivery was ok. Had to send one dish back twice before it arrived hot. Since they have runners it was not the fault of the server.
Great brunch options.
We went in and the wait time was about 45 minutes. We are from out of town, and the mall would close at 9:30. We asked if we could take the guest pager, and they said that it wouldn’t work past right outside the door (it was raining). We decided to make a reservation online so that we could see the mall. When we came back for our reservation, the hostess told us we couldn’t do that (decline to wait in line and make a reservation online) and that we would have to wait an additional 45 minutes and said she would call her manager over to sort it out, but she never did. We heard great things about the pizza and decided to just wait. We got a pizza to share and the crispy half chicken. The pizza was good, but the chicken had no flavor and was dry. Our waitress was really nice and attentive though.
First visit in over a year since we moved away, crab and avo appetizer really impressed us...happy to get some local beer, while trying out their crab cakes and mini burgers.
Great service with helpful suggestions, we’ll be back!
Food was really good. Their happy hour menu is super affordable and really yummy. Got a pizza and shrimp and grits. Service was a bit slow, our waiter was also bartending but still a great experience and I’d go back.
Love sitting outside and the food was very good. Great location in pentagon city
Food was okay, but service was extremely slow.
The food was amazing and the service was awesome! We’ll definitely be back.
A lively, trendy place with great service and really good, reasonably priced food options. They have many personal pizzas you can share with your group. The only complaint was that the music was WAY too loud. We almost considered leaving it was so loud.
The food was delicious, fresh and flavorful and Pedro was superb!
The food is good here and they usually give us a nice booth by the window. The servers are very friendly. The service can be a bit slow though. I think there are too many tables for each server. You should allow some extra time and not be in a hurry. We made reservations at 4:30 which is in between lunch and dinner. But things got busy rather quickly and service slowed down. There is a pretty good happy hour from 4:00-7:00 I think. The calamari was almost half off, and you saved over a 1/3 on the cost of the burger sliders. And during happy hour any 10 inch pizza was half off I think, and you could make half your pizza one way, and the other half another way, even if you wanted different sauces on each half of your pizza. We didn't order pizza though. We had the ribs which were good and you're given a huge hunk of corn bread with a butter glaze. The sliders were good too with a gigantic mound of fried onion strings. We liked the sweet jalapeno dipping jelly for the calamari. The calamari was cooked until tender, not tough at all. I recommend this place, just don't expect quick service and be sure to make reservations. It gets very busy.
Great food and reasonably priced for the area. Our waitress was awesome!!
The gluten free pizza was delicious and the happy hour wine was tasty!
I didn't care for the chicken and grits. It was an oily mess and executed poorly. The "butter sauce" overwhelmed the grits. It made me sad.
Very good customer service from the manager to the service. Food was also very good. Music could have been turned down a little.
Outstanding fried chicken sandwich - novel use of devil egg spread on a crispy yet tender breast
Food was fantastic! The music selection was great! Service was poor. It took 20m to bring water out. There was a hair in my friend’s soup (that was obviously not hers) and I know this isn’t a big deal but the same server that took my daughters order for Sprite came back and refilled it with water, seemed to me she was in a hurry and had no attention to detail.
Waited 30 minutes after our reservation time to be seated.
20 minutes before waited on and nearly an hour by the time we got our food. Split the check and waitress misplaced one of the credit cards. Took another 15 minutes to sort it out. Wasn’t that busy. Understaffed. Good is good. Perhaps a one off night, but not a pleasant experience.
Food and service were great as I expect from Matchbox! I've been meaning to try the chorizo burger and it did not disappoint.
Delicious food, but very slow service. Also, no acknowledgement when note on Open Table was left re son's 5th birthday (7/14/13). Know some places don't offer a dessert but a mention is always appreciated.
Matchbox in Pentagon City was a treat! My family and I went there for Happy Hour on a Friday night. It wasn’t too loud or hard to get a table. We ordered Souther Charmers which definitely charmed us! I am gluten free and really enjoyed their gluten free pizza. I couldn’t decide between the Pesto Chicken Pizza and the Fig and Prosciutto pizza so they did 1/2 and 1/2 for me. They were both delicious! The Fig and Prosciutto is definitely something to try. You won’t regret it!
Had a good experience with Matchbox at Pentagon City Mall. I met my girlfriend there for brunch and some shopping. We were both sad to see the menu online didn't match the in-house menu and so we couldn't get the eggs benedict. I ended up getting the garden scramble which was good (especially the potatoes) but they need to expand their Brunch menu if it's going to be a thing.
The Lemon Pound cake was very delicious. They recently introduced their brunch menu and I would recommend trying it out. The Peach bellini was also tasty.
All-around outstanding! Came here after a reference from a friend. The arancini was exceptional, and the prosciutto-fig pizza is a MUST. Friendly and attentive service, mid-range reasonable pricing. We are very glad we went to Matchbox!
The location was convenient; the food was above average; the service was excellent. The only problem was noise - my NIOSH decibel meter app read in the mid-80's. That's a lot for lunch.
The experience was good, noise was a factor but in was during Happy Hour.
I’ve never had a bad meal here. Great Smokey flavor in the Chicken Pesto sandwich and the fries are great.
It was great and the kids loved the food!
Food was great!! Server was wonderful!
Went on daughter’s recently recommendation, glad we did. Great service, seated quickly and helped, attended to, supported throughout the experience there. Loved the food and the look of the place, even as busy and noisy as it was.
Matchbox is one of the few sit-down restaurants inside the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City mall. If you want table service, and not eat at the food court or one of the self-service restaurants, this is your only choice besides Harry's Burgers and BBQ. Because of this, it gets pretty busy. You should definitely make reservations. We came on a Thursday night at 7:15 and had reservations. Those without reservations were told that there was a 45 minute wait. I've eaten at a couple of Matchbox Pizza places before. This was more modern and of course, very new. The server was nice. This time we didn't order pizza and what we ordered was pretty good. The mini-burgers (you can order 3, 6 or 9) came with an amazing amount of fried onion strings (very good). They came on a brioche bun. The calamari was perfectly cooked, still tender. Very good! We also liked the jalapeno jelly dipping sauce for the calamari. Barely hot, it went very well with the calamari. We also ordered the steak frites. I asked for medium rare, on the rarer side, and it came out pretty well. Usually the steak comes out too well done for my taste but this was on the rarer side. My only quibble was that the frites were a bit too thick to be frites. I ordered asparagus as a side but for $5 it seemed to be a very small order. There were maybe 8-10 stalks of medium sized asparagus to maybe 50 cents per spear. All in all, the food was pretty good. We were very glad that we made reservations as our wait was only a few minutes. We were a party of three and we were given a nice large booth near the window. The booth could easily seat 6 people so that was very nice!
We all had sandwiches - grilled chicken, the bistro burger, and in my case the "Nashville hot" fried chicken sandwich. Each one came with a side of fries - a somewhat small serving of them by the way. But overall the meals were fine.
The service left a bit to be desired. We arrived on time for our 630 reservation for 3. We were twice told our table was "almost ready". After almost 20 minutes, it was clear that the hostess was struggling to find a table for us - soon enough, she and the manager personally had to clear, wipe, and set a table for us (right next to where we had been standing while we waited).
Once seated, our water glasses were not refilled unless I flagged the server down and requested it. And my order for a soda without ice took multiple requests to be delivered correctly. Overall, the service was quite slow.
Food was good waiter was unattentive
pizza is top notch and i'm a picky New Yorker. The giant spicy meatball is a must order item and big enough for 2-3 to share as an appetizer. Sauce is amazing.
Inventive cocktails and a strong beer list.
Stayed for several hours, worked with two waiters Shoman and Brad ( may have missed pronounced the first name ). The service was excellent, waiters were attentive, knowledgeable concerning the menu, and flexible with requests on the orders. Was with a party of 4 and had a top flight dining experience! Food was good, cooked to requested temperature, and out in a reasonable amount of time. Recommend to others and looking forward to a return visit.
