Bus stop located on 14th Street near the National Press Building.
Had a delicious meal ... filet with crab cakes, mashed potato and sautéed Brussels sprouts. The wine selection was good, the service attentive and not intrusive. Location was fabulous and the ambiance felt traditional but updated. Will be back next time in DC.
Excellent food and a wonderful weight staff made for a wonderful time.
Great location to eat outdoors on Pennsylvania Avenue
I have dined here many times over the years and have always enjoyed the food and service. For some reason, the food tasted old, overcooked, off flavorings - in general disappointing. I will try them again in the hope that they were just having an off day.
Very nice lunch with family and friends. Highly recommend due to the historical nature.
Be sure to enjoy the city’s most authentic restaurant.
The Occidental Grille holds a place in DC history, & it represents poorly! The service was HORRIBLE! My husband's $49 steak was NOT cooked as requested. Not only did they not come back to see how our food was, but when we flagged someone down, to "find" our waiter, the waiter then questioned my husband's opinion of how the steak should have been prepared. It was replaced, & still no one waited to see if it was acceptable. Would like to think that this restaurant would be First Class, but not so1
Our seats were right on Pennsylvania Ave, so we were subject to inquisitive tourists getting on the Hop On bus, a homeless man begging and anyone curious about how to get in the courtyard. When we asked for common drinks/brands, the bar didn’t have it or just ran out. We settled for simple drinks. We endured this for a while since it took “forever” to get the meal. Though the food was good, the elements above made the waiter (who tried hard) look bad, and the atmosphere detracted from what should have been a nice afternoon eating outside. There are better options with better quality elsewhere.
Beautiful white table cloth restaurant w/ generous seating on the interior as well as exterior. Very pleased at the service. Our waiter was jolly & engaging but made sure the table stayed clean, we had proper utensils before each course and expertly devised/served each of us portions of our whole stuffed Chilean Sea Bass.
Fantastic - great service and food was amazing!!
Was having lunch with a dear friend and former colleague from out of town. Dined inside on a day when many people were dining outside and really enjoyed the quiet atmosphere. So we had a good long talk, along with some excellent food. I had the swordfish, which was superb. Would love to have it again so I will definitely return.
Anniversary dinner turned out to be average dining experience. Had to send a couple of items back as not as ordered. Expected more.
Very enjoyable place to eat, sitting outdoors and watching the people go by...lovely setting and very nice food.
The food was delicious, I had a shrimp po boy, but it is so large that it is awkward to eat during a business lunch. The ambiance is great. My only issue after the hostess left our table, a waiter never showed up, the staff was not very attentive but the food and place were great.
We go to DC at least once a year and we always make sure to eat here. It’s become one of our favorite places to eat at
Grilled salmon ordered “medium” was severely overlooked and dry.
Waitress was rude and the food was way overpriced for the quality, taste, and quantity. Would not go back.
We were spending a couple of days in DC from Ireland. We wanted to eat in nice places. We had lunch there on Saturday 7th July. Both the food & service was excellent. We researched for other places to go that evening. Decided that it would be interesting to eat inside this time! We weren't disappointed!
The lady that was the Maitre d' at lunch was there again. The ambiance was wonderful and the food was excellent. As for the service, again it was excellent, friendly & charming. Should we visit DC again Occidental will be on our list.
Best service I have had in DC. Fantastic food. And a quiet and beautiful place to enjoy good conversation.
Historic venue, excellent atmosphere and service. Very limited menu and VERY expensive!!!
Great food. Great Experience.
Sat outside. It was a great atmosphere. Enjoyed the oysters. Halibut was outstanding. Sorbet was a great dessert. Server was very nice and helpful in selecting a wine. Fabulous experience
The server was excellent and knew the menu well!
Service was great. Food was mediocre at best. Reminded me of an over priced Olive Garden.
We had an excellent early dinner before a show; crab cakes are fantastic! Service was excellent; attentive but not bothersome. Excellent value for top quality food. Highly recommend!
Good place to go for lunch in the downtown Washington area, near the White House. Service is generally good, efficient and friendly. The last time we had an unusually good waiter with a great sense of humor (but sadly, I don't remember his name). Regular American fare, consistently good.
It's a great appeal. Fantastic photos. Leather booths nice linen. Grest service and the food was delicious with great presentation. We thoroughly enjoyed.
Fathers Day. Food wasn’t great. Frittata was plain, just egg and dry with four cherry tomatoes on top. Short ribs were dry and appeared to have been microwaved too much. Pastry assortments appeared store bought. Hadn’t been to Occidental in a few years and won’t be going back anytime soon. Made reservation late so that should have been an indication that on a busy Fathers Day, reservations were readily available. Restaurant was almost empty at a usual busy Sunday brunch time. Waiter was nice and hostess was gracious. The setting outdoors could not have been nicer. Wish the food had been better.
Although I have eaten at Occidental Grill before and enjoyed it, this experience was not as pleasant.
It was Father's Day and my husband and I sat on the Patio. Our Server was not very friendly and had no sense of humor. She did not smile or make us feel welcome.
The drinks are expensive which I expect but glasses were dirty. I declined water because my drinking glass was dirty and I did not want to confront our moody server.
I ordered a Hamburger small in size for $20. The Blue Cheese on the burger overwhelmed the taste of the meat. You could not choose an alternative to fries or chips. For $20, I would expect a veggie or small salad to be available.
The Big Bus Tour has apparently picked the Occidental Grill as a pick up and drop off. Right next to us was a line of tourists waiting to board the bus. This was distracting and uncomfortable.
I will not be returning to Occidental except for Happy Hour.
service was extraordinary and the food was divine. this was brunch: duck and waffles were flavorful and savory; steak and duck eggs hit just the right spot. the duck eggs were poached and were thick and creamy. desert were almond bread pudding which was a comfort and not too sweet and vinegar pie which was adventurous and surprisingly sweet with a zing at the end
Stuffed sea bass is a must. Would highly recommend it.
The food did not make up for the terrible service. The waiter made us feel rushed when ordering, was not overly helpful, was no where to be found when we wanted more drinks, didn’t bring all the sides at the same time. Not impressed.
This is my husband's and my go to place whenever we are in DC on business. We intentionally book an extra day so that we can enjoy the outdoor cafe dining at Occidental! Love the drink list, food and exceptional service by staff. A must visit o er and over again!
Great outdoor dining
Slow and inattentive service on rear table inside (Sat 6pm) throughout otherwise great meal. Waiter totally forgot to bring a second drink order. Desperate to get to a 7:30pm show, eventually had to leave table and track down anyone to get our check in order to pay.
They don't have any non-alcoholic beer choices at all.
Exceptional experience with friends from Australia. We could not have been happier!
Noise level is lowest in neighborhood. Outdoor seating is, alas, a bit noisy because of the tourist bus stop. But either way, it's a relief from 14th Street or "The Line".
The Occidental Grill has an amazing menu that reflects the season with foods in season. Our special occasion was great due the outstanding service, ambiance and food. We will definitely recommend this restaurant to others with special occasions or just a nice business lunch or dinner.
The service was outstanding. My duck breast was awful. I enjoyed everything else about the restaurant except my meal. I don’t usually write reviews, but I was so disappointed by the poorly prepared duck breast. I labored through some of the dish, but ultimately had the server take it away.
