We had beautiful weather which really helped, not sure what it would had been like if it was raining. The food was very tasty and presented very nicely. Not sure if I would go back again, been there done type of feeling.
From the trip in the taxi to the welcome on the jetty, to the service, food and ambience it was a truly amazing experience. Excellent value - we had a beautiful day too.
Quality and size of mussels disappointing and being charged an additional fee for substitutiing cream for ice cream a little tight on a £50 plus meal. The overall booking experience was not easy and it would have been nice to have a personal contact that could have guided us through availability. The overall experience , albeit on a glorious Autumn day , was very enjoyabble
It was fabulous, from the water taxi to our time on the cafe. Food was lovely staff very friendly couldn’t fault anything and will definitely go again and recommend it.
I do love this place. Food is always good, a little bit pricey, but realistically it's worth every penny. I look forward to going back next year. I had three trips this year :-)
We managed to get a table for 5.30pm in September at the last minute. I felt we were spoilt by the warm low sun and beautiful autumn sunset. Definitely the best time to go at that time of year. The boat ride to shore was dreamy...
The portions were huge and the Neptune Sharing Platter was fresh with nicely flavoured pockets of seafood. The dill cockles, clams, prawns and aioli being our favourite... don’t be shy of asking for a doggy bag :)
Pink grapefruit gin was lovely and the atmosphere always calm, if not a bit rocky.
A perfect way to end the coastal walk.
2nd visit in a few day, always excellent service, food etc. The excitement starts from the moment you get on the Water Taxi to the moment you leave the Water Taxi at the end of a great evening. Love introducing the River Exe Cafe to friends.
If in the area you must go, a very special “Cafe” .
Looking forward to next summer when we can go again, it will be closing next week for the winter.
We had a lovely lunch, best mussels I’ve had for a long time, and the lobster was a real treat. The whole experience from being taken there on the boat, the great quality food, friendly service, lovely English wine, and brilliant weather, could not have been better, other than it was quite pricey. But great way to celebrate our anniversary.
The evening was really delightful with a moonlit boat trip to and from the venue, attentive but not in your face staff. The food was prompt, really well presented and very flavoursome.
Great food, lovely staff and fantastic setting / views
Enjoyed the evening throughout. The boat trip was relaxed and efficient both ways and we enjoyed seeing both sides of the river. The service was very good,in fact the staff at times were doubling up but not a problem. The food we ordered was a variety which we all enjoyed. We picked a lot of mix tasting foods which were great. There was a good range of choice of beverages to choose. We had a very nice evening and have no hesitation to come again.
Absolutely incredible. Loved the experience from beginning to end! The food, ambiance and service was perfect... faultless. I'm so excited to go back. Thank you for making our date night so special.
my wife and I had a very good afternoon at river exe café it was a very interesting experience which we enjoyed my wife would definitely return but I probably wouldn't this is nothing to do with river exe I love fish but my body doesn't after several operations so would prefer a more varied menu to pick from
4 of us visited the River Exe Cafe during Sept, from the service of the ferryman to the serving staff the experience was excellent. The variety of the menu was exceptional. Will come again.
Very efficient organisation regarding the water taxi etc. Good menu, helpful staff. Our guests enjoyed their mussels and the hake. My husband and I had the fish and chips which were very disappointing. The batter was heavy and greasy.
I thought the atmosphere and food were excellent. I thought the service was rushed. We spent a lot of money on champagne, wine etc and because the ferry was delayed due to another customers lateness we were rushed at all stages. We were asked if they could remove glasses and food before we had finished on more than one occasion.
I appreciate it is late in the season but it was the first time at any restaurant that I didn't leave a tip.
It was our first visit based on recommendations from friends and we weren't disappointed. Really loved the whole experience from the river taxi trip over . We were lucky with the weather which added to such an amazing time; but this unique restaurant would be special whatever the weather. The menu is a fish lovers paradise, imaginatively presented and the portions are generous too. A perfect way to spend a relaxing Sunday lunch with stunning views of the Exe.
We had looked forward to our first ever evening at River Exe Cafe for many months....and we were not disappointed!! From the charming river taxi driver ?Matt... to our very sweet and helpful waitress..sorry no name .. it was a special evening. The food was absolutely delicious and we are already planning to return next summer bringing "first timer" friends with us!
What a fantastic time we had and what a special occasion it made. Met on time by the Puffin taxi very efficient and cheery welcome. The location of the café was amazing placed in the estuary and the little boats coming and going. We were lucky to have a fabulous weather that afternoon so were able to sit out in the sunshine. Staff were polite, efficient and cheery. Food was fresh and a good selection on the menu for all tastes which was beautifully served up and delicious. Picked up again for our return journey by the same Puffin taxi. A very slick operation.
A lovely dining experience, made all the better by lovely weather and alfresco eating. A small negative was the stingy amount of bread offered with some of the starters, for example ½ a slice of bread with the octopus stew. We were told we could ask for more, but when we did we were offered little toasted breads for a specific dish. This was only minor and overall it was wonderful. We will be back!
We enjoyed the Fisherman’s Platter which had a really good assortment of fish. We initially were to sit inside but one of the waitresses offered us a table outside in the sun - glorious. Our visit was great and we were extremely well looked after. Will definitely be returning.
Fantastic atmosphere. Great food and brilliant service. What more could anyone want.
Just wonderful, a unique dining experience, food is superb and the views to die for.
Absolutely excellent! Exquisite setting, superb fish dishes and faultless service
Fantastic experience - fab location, great service, easy and well organized for trip out to the barge. The food is not cheap but superb quality and very well presented. Unpretentious and high quality at the same time - a rare treat. This is in the 'special occasion' category for us, given it requires an hours drive to Exmouth and prices are appropriate but still on the high side. However, given the entire experience, the ambience and the food, I shall be booking again for sure.
It was my partner's birthday and we both thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Everything went very smoothly and the staff were very attentive.
We will visit again next year and bring some friends along.
Cannot fault this place. From the exciting ferry ride over, the friendly staff and the outstanding food- local mussels so plump & juicy, crab expertly prepared and fish fresh from the sea
The only comment I wish to make is regarding the fish and chip option.
The batter on my portion was overly hard and not of the usual standard one might expect on the barge.
I left most of it. What has happened to light beer battered fish?
Anyway I think the fish was hake, a fish not best suited for the dish.
I appreciate that COD May be less available in the local market but it would have been perfect.
Apart from that dish the muscles were outstanding, large juicy and perfectly cooked.
Wonderful trip out, amazing food, brilliant service and amazing trip back.
I went with younger friends who I thought would like the whole "event" rather than just a meal out. They thoroughly enjoyed it. I am a bit blase about it now, having been several times. The water taxi trips, the views, eating outdoors at sea (clever that the seating is on the leaward side of the "boat") make it much more than just the meal. It is a good meal too. The young, boatie staff have just the right amount of nonchalance!
Beautiful setting, fabulous food and super staff. You can see why you have to book well in advance! Everything is timed perfectly. A super experience, one not to forget, we went for my dad’s 70th. Thank you all ♥️
Everything we had hoped for any more highly recommended will definitely visit again!
Absolutely amazing! We were a group of 9. From the time of booking until the moment we left the Cafe customer service was outstanding. Staff was very friendly, welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The food was outstanding and the Cafe has a great atmosphere. Thank you to every at the River Exe Cafe for such a lovely time.
A lovely experience...always love it at the cafe! A fun way to get to your destination, unusual for England.
Was slightly cold inside, but everything else great. Would definitely come again.
Overpriced food, which was bland in parts. Very cold inside restaurant. Also very noisy as we were seated directly in front of the bar. Overall wouldn’t return as the value for money wasn’t good and the food was ok but nothing special
Fabulous experience if you’re looking for something out of the ordinary in a magical setting. Fabulous food & charming, helpful serving staff.
amazing! the food was delicious, the service was great, the whole experience was brilliant from start to finish. really well organised & something really different to enjoy. will definitely recommend & go again!!
The adventure overall was marvellous. The transport was great. There was a slight concern on the return trip that the 5.30 taxi barely got there in time for the last ferry to Starcross at 5.40 but we made it just in time. Part of the adventure is the trip to Exmouth before being transferred to the cafe. However, as it is so close to Starcross is is possible to consider taking folk who need to get to Starcross back there after the meal instead of over to Exmouthwhere they then have to make further arrangements for the return trip? If the last ferry has already gone having to take the train via Exeter can slightly take the edge off what is otherwise a very exciting day.
This was our second visit to the River Exe cafe. We can not fault it. Amazing food and location. Planning next years visit for my birthday
