Chef José Santaella has trained with some of the best chefs in the world, including Ferrán Adriá, Eric Ripert, and Gary Danko. His apprenticeships and successful catering career paved the way for Santaella, his signature restaurant in Santurce's La Placita Marketplace. The decor is rustic yet elegant, with exposed walls, Edison light fixtures, an interior garden, and a sparkling bar. We ate here last year so were eager to go back when someone we saw recently said it was his favorite restaurant in San Juan. We had a wonderful meal - lecon, salmon and shrimp were eaten and we shared the chorizo in puff pastry for starters that was excellent. Good drinks as well. Really a great restaurant.

Had the best time at Santaella. We were running behind and they were beyond lovely and accommodating despite a full dining room. Our waiter (cheeky?) was just beyond amazing. He made incredible recommendations, took such good care of us and introduced us to Chef Jose Santaella. We were there for my niece’s graduation so him going the extra mile beyond made our night. Now for the food! I genuinely cannot wait to come back to this restaurant as everything was delicious and flawless. We started with tuna lollipops (fresh and fun), pulpo (cooked perfectly and the chorizo with it -I could have eaten an entire bowl), and the Brussel sprout salad (fresh, amazing dressing and delish Brussels). We then moved on to our entrees. 2 of us ordered the sea bass (the most delicious sea bass I’ve ever eaten -fresh, flavorful and incredible) and the red snapper (beautiful and tasty). We ended with the Nutella sandwich and salted caramel pot de creme. Just when I thought I was full-we couldn’t stop eating the desserts. Everything was perfect-gorgeous ambiance, fun bar, great drinks but the food and the service is top notch. I can’t wait to go back!!!

It would be great to offer vegetarian options on the menu. Also, to have separate frying pans for seafood. This will allow allergic guests to taste fried appetizers from the menu. The white rice served was not fresh, something you notice on the first bite. Ambience was very nice. Good wine. Excellent service.

Everything about this spot was amazing. From the appetizer to the main course meal……I’d eat this everyday if I lived here. The Boa Buns and Tuna sticks are the best for a light but very tasty start. The chilean Seabass was an absolute work of art. Five star review all the way!!!!!

Santaella is a must-try restaurant in San Juan and definitely worth returning to over and over. The meal was fantastic, from the fresh seafood to the classic local dishes. The cocktails went amazingly with the food—try the watermelon mojitos and the perfect lady! Overall, we had an incredible dining experience.

Santaella is one of my favorite restaurants. I was disappointed, however, by the service. While the waiter was a nice guy, he did not actively look after our table, less so cleaning residues of food after our different courses (especially from dinner to dessert). We felt rushed.

Went for my birthday yesterday with my husband. It was recommended by my brother and his wife. Really packed. Very popular place. We had to wait a few minutes to be seated and it didn’t look like people wanted to leave lol. Food and drinks are exquisite. I went for the recommended options of our server Damian and he was not wrong! I really enjoyed everything and I would definitely recommend Santaella. The caramelized dessert was truly amazing recommended by our server Damian as well! Unforgettable evening, thank you!

Ok.. Escargot were the best we have EVER had! The tuna skewers were awesome. We were between the whole fish and the pork shank Chose the fish. It was good but wish we had had the shank. But it was less calories for sure! The wine we ordered was fabulous. Our waiter was exceptional!!! And all of the staff were great. What an amazing experience on our first night here. You have to go there!! YUMMY!
