What Insiders Are Saying
The Progress, on Fillmore, is a great time and a good scene, with excellent food.
I've eaten there a dozen times and loved it. I'm sure I'll try it again, but our dinner was really quite bad and very expensive too. I wouldn't have minded the cost if the food had been on point, but it wasn't. The service was also not good with a long wait to get our order in.
The Progress was outstanding overall. Our server was very helpful with recommendations and conversation. The pace and progression of the dishes were amazing; It felt like choosing your own tasting menu. The tables were a little close to each other for my liking, but I can understand that in San Francisco. I will certainly be coming here again, and I am excited to try their sister restaurant, State Bird Provisions.
Like State Bird Provisions, The Progress knocks it out of the park. Good for almost all occasions. The family style approach is a perfect fit for the menu. Get the duck, it’s a really special dish.
Awesome atmosphere and experience. Fantastic food and service.
Wonderful birthday dinner. Oysters, duck platter for two, pasta and sautéed broccoli were all outstanding dishes. Service could not have been more professional and responsive, and wine recommendation was impeccable. Fabulous meal.
Great ambiance and the cocktails were fantastic! We had a party of six and the dishes to share were a little small for a group that size, but would have been perfect for 2 or 4. Also, the lamb chops were a must have!
Went there for my boyfriend's birthday and had the best time! Probably stayed there for 2.5 hours and could've stayed another hour -- we didn't want to leave! Between the amazing food, the attentive service, and lively atmosphere, it was the perfect spot for a special occasion and we will absolutely be back :)
Excellent meal. Great service. Can’t wait to go back.
Food was delicious, try all of the vegetable options, each was unique and tasty. The big items really need 3+ people to avoid be overwhelmed with one food choice.
Our server — Julia R — was spectacular. She was able to correctly represent the flavors & presentation of each dish. before our order. This was a triumph given the number of menu items we wanted versus limited ourselves to for the evening.
In short, her attributes include articulate, enjoyable, accurate in her representations, . . . all while getting orders, bills, and requests in properly.
Damn good — we’ll be back.
Loved vibe but was hard to hear my colleagues.
Last time I went every dish was wow. This time ...
Some of the dishes were exceptional— the trout, the snap peas. Other dishes were meh — the mushrooms and the asparagus.
Next time I will consult with the waiter before I order like I did during my first visit to make sure I order better.
Very yummy food, but be prepared to pay quite a bit for it.
The food and the servers were excellent... Just don't expect to have a nice evening with your company as they will kick you out after two hours (in as polite a way as possible!)
I've had many fine meals, however my night at The Progress just became my favorite since my dinner at Bouley's in 1994 after I participated in a Patis France Competition in NYC. What these two restaurants have in common is a total experience. From the door opening to the final cocktail, I was mesmerized. The friendly staff, the aroma, the textures and flavors of every dish, not to mention the perfect wines we were ecstatic. An evening like this we will remember for decades to come, that is something special.
We also would like to mention the extra care they gave us when our time was up at our table they so thoughtfully moved us to a booth at the bar for our dessert course. Our hats are off to the entire staff!
We can't wait to return next year:). Congratulations on a truly wonderful restaurant!! We've been spreading the word:). Thank you. Ami
Great food! We'd all been to State Bird before. Half the group liked this even better!
Great night - food, drinks, staff, ambiance all special. Thanks!
So sad that the rabbit is not on the menu!!!! But still, the lamb shoulder is pretty tender and the skin is crispy, the duck and rabbit tastes like pork?! But the ink noddle's sauce is so good that i wanna order one more dish!!!
This was an excellent choice, recommended by a friend. We had a really enjoyable evening and would definitely recommend it to any other friends who come to San Francisco.
Great family style dining - delicious small plates and interesting menu.
Decided to come with my husband for our wedding anniversary and so happy that we did! Our server helped us pick a bottle of wine to go with our order. The duck was our main course and we we were not disappointed. The anchovies were also amazing.
The duck platter was amazing, but seriously, the squid ink noodles would be reason enough to come here. They will change your life!
Great food and service but we had a very awkwardly placed table on the far left corner of the room. We had a party of 3 and were given a rectangle table where two people sat on the long side and one person sat on the shorter side. It was hard to have a convo and I feel they just squeezed us in even though there were other tables and I had made reservations a while back.
Our new favorite place in San Francisco!
Food was exceptional, service outstanding. Our server Julia was absolutely the best. We will certainly tell our friends to go there....a great mix of people and noise level surprisingly low....a win-win for everyone...
The food was out of this world. When I come back to visit San Fran, I will be coming back!
Mind and taste buds have officially been blown!!!!
We tried an assortment from the appies, salads, veg, meats & dessert portions of the menu. Every bite was phenomenal. Drinks were fantastic too!!!
Julia, our server and all other staff we encountered were top notch. Very informative. They were all at the top of their game.
Only problem is we don’t live in San Francisco so we can’t keep going back whenever we please.
Very creative menu utilizing all local ingredients with many coming from their personal farm, others coming from long term relationships with local farmers and gatherers. Superb wine list with offerings from around the world at a value, especially considering the uniqueness of the list and the broad selection. Great wine by the glass choices as well.
Great service, Sofie was our server and she killed it. We got some gifts from the kitchen and they were great 10/10 will be back.
Great food great service wine corkage fees need to be re-evaluated. Great staff.
The best I have had in the SF area in a while. The chef is super creative. The wine list is not that great.
Amazing food, great atmosphere. Everything we ordered was divine.
This was our first visit to the Progress. With great PR we went with high expectations and we were not disappointed. Our small bites were innovative and very tasty. The charcuterie was fabulous. Though the bites came bit too quickly the main platter was very delayed. Once it arrived the lamb chops were plentiful with a range of rare to well done when Med rare for all was preferred. We had a great time and look forward to trying other options with friends and family.
This place has great drinks and great service. The food was a little salty and heavy and always excessive when it comes to experiencing new foods.
The Progress is our favorite place to take friends and out of town guests as it never fails to impress. The food is always great and the unique combination of flavors make for a delightful discovery of tastes. On this night we had the lamb platter and various side dishes. The lamb was simply delicious. Looking forward to the next time we have or invent a reason to come.
Yummy. Snap peas were a bit and so was the asparagus. Halibut was so good but the clams in the dish didn'tneed to be there. Cocoa nib panna cotta.....delicious. but this is a place where you can feel.like you are sitting with another couple because tables for two are so close together. That's annoying although we needed up sharing dessert with the strangers because they were literally one inch away from us.
Fantastic food! The only negative is the noise, but what’s in the plateS makes up for that.
The Progress has such potential and some of the dishes were extraordinary, but the execution was sorely lacking on others and it was often significantly overpriced for what we got. However, it should also be noted that we were a party of four and they emphasize sharing everything but with one pescatarian in our group and another who didn't eat seafood, it was a struggle and when I left I was hungry. Also, although the service was excellent it was also fairly overzealous and at times intrusive as it became the running joke at our table that if there was an empty glass for more than 5 minutes, the wait staff would become visibly upset - although they weren't such sticklers when it came to finished plates, which was also quite puzzling. The drinks were wonderful but for the price - slightly more than $150/pp including tip, I'd rather have an amazing Omakase meal at any number of excellent sushi restaurants.
Excellent service and well balanced delicious food especially the anchovies!!!
