The Puffing Billy is located in the beautiful village of Exton on the east side of the Exe estuary.

We offer a dynamic, seasonal menu of locally sourced produce inside a cosy, recently revamped stylish interior. We change our menus regularly and have a daily changing specials board utilising local produce. On Sundays we offer a superb selection of roast dinners.

Our bar offers a wide range of drinks which include an interesting range of soft drinks, regularly changing real ales, an extensive wine list, over 100 spirits and a full coffee menu.

Dogs are welcome in the bar and timber area of the restaurant, the garden and outside. We do not allow dogs in our main restaurant.

We welcome customers who wish to come in for a drink or a coffee in either our bar area, secluded rear garden or at the front of the building where you can watch the world go by. We have bike parking for our more energetic punters and for the little ones there is also an excellent play area across the road.

Midweek open-air meal with friends after a stroll from Lympstone. Charming and efficient service from Henry and his young colleagues, and delicious seaside food (mussels, fish 'n' chips, fishcakes). The perfect summer lunch in a favourite location.

We normally very much enjoy the food and atmosphere at the Puffing Billy but were left feeling disappointed this time. Although we were aware things would be different at this time with Covid-19 playing a part the food itself was not as good quality as we have previously experienced which was a shame.

Went during the war out to help out government initiative following Covid -19.
Very busy although well organised with social distancing.
Food was good. Menu limited but that is understandable during current climate.
Overall a good experience.

Ordered two roast pork Sunday lunches. Meal looked good on arrival. However, the majority of pork was fat with very little meat. Food was not hot and the broccoli was hard.

Beer and cider offer was poor as these had sold out.

Very disappointing visit. Not worth the drive.

Had previous great experiences at the puffing Billy with great food. Unfortunately this time we were incredibly disappointed. All 4 meals did not come close to meeting expectations and the menu was uninspiring to say the least. It was a lot of money for a Wetherspoons type menu and quality. We will definitely be giving it some time before considering a visit in the future

Very covert 19 aware. Waiters polite and efficient, lovely lunchtime selection of sandwiches. Need to book to dine inside or take your chance of a vacant outside table. We felt safe and enjoyed the experience twice.

Food arrived cold and had to be sent back. Salty fatty cottage pie - not nice. Were offered free dessert or tea/coffee. Ordered a tea and a coffee -got 2 coffees. Greeted on entering by a barmaid wearing a mask - puts me off straight away in a pub. Garden seemed full of loud beer drinking men. My friend and I are new to the area. First and last time.

The food quality was average for the Sunday roast. The salted caramel sauce on the sticky toffee pudding was salty to the point it was almost inedible.

This is the third time I have had the Sunday roast. On the previous two occasions the food was superb followed by average.

This place is too hit and miss for us to return.

Disappointed by the beef roast dinner which had a considerable amount of fat and gristle on it. Not up to the usual standard.

Great food, difficult for staff but did a first class job while being mindful of social distancing.
Special on the day Pork roulade was full of flavour.
Usually a vibrant occasion was slightly subdued, but not their fault, less diners = less atmosphere, but would recommend to anyone
We missed 3 special birthdays in last 3 months that we had booked to go to the Billy. Worth the wait and we will be back soon.

Some menu items were not available. Broccoli was uncooked and yellowing the trio of sausages were hard and skins were tough. The starters and sweets were very good. The waitresses were very pleasant and we shall be back again soon I hope

Beautiful pub and surroundings, very clean and social distancing excellent, we felt very safe.
The staff were very friendly and efficient but my father had to wait quite a long time for the one sweet that we ordered - sticky toffee pudding, so not too difficult! We had to ask if it was on it’s way and it was then brought out promptly.
The food was absolutely delicious. Shame I can only give 4 stars, I would have absolutely liked to have given 5 but unfortunately it was not very hot. Maybe I’m being a little harsh
under these strange circumstances.
I would definitely go again and hopefully be able to give 5 stars.

We were really long forward to our Sunday roast after being in lockdown for so long, especially after having such good roasts from here Before. Unfortunately this time it was very disappointing, our food was cold and the roast potatoes tasted like they were days old and been reheated. I am not one to complain or make a fuss usually but I had to send it back. The waitress was lovely and very apologetic but the fresh meal was much the same. We won’t be rushing back as also on the higher end prices anyway.

Very disappointed. Went to the Puffing Billy for our first roast out of lockdown. We ordered the roast chicken, and were served a plain chicken breast. When we asked why we were served a chicken breast rather than roast chicken, the waiter advised they hadn’t made the changes on the menu yet. Afterwards, we could hear the lady working behind the bar making comments and snide remarks about the fact we had asked about why we had been given chicken breast. If we had wanted a plain chicken breast, we would have cooked it ourselves and not paid £13 for it. Not good at all.

Only the 2nd day open after Covid 19 restrictions and all measures had been put in place to meet social distancing and we felt very confident to be there. Starters were delicious, fish cakes and terrine but the main course of roast beef and roast chicken was tepid although generous in portion size. The pavlova dessert was rock hard and inedible. We did not follow this up with staff at the time as we had an elderly guest with us and also attributed this to possibly getting back into the swing of things!! The experience did not live up to previous reputation and recommendations from friends.

It was our first meal out since 'lockdown' started. Booking the table was easy and I was surprised to discover that there appeared to be plenty of capacity.Social distancing and hygiene rules were applied by the all the staff although the same could not be said for some of the patrons! We did feel that the menu was a little limited(no fresh fish other than battered fish of the day). The food we did order was beautifully presented and very hot.All in all an enjoyable evening out!

We made a snap decision to try for a table and were delighted when they could fit us in. The pub was busy but doing everything by the book and I'm glad to say it all worked well. It is not quite the same as it was but that is to be expected and I think the staff coped very well indeed with all the new systems in place. Lovely supper and great to be cooked for after all this time.

It was a great disappointment. The service was very slow 1 hour 30min for starters. The food was very poor indeed tasteless, cold and inedible. We were not charged for the main courses they had to go back or were not edible. It was the first night back after COVID closure but notwithstanding this not being able to cook a steak and serving cold low quality food is not a great start back. Waiting Staff did there best.
