A great local spot that caters to local government employees and the nearby university. Good food at a solid value, especially for DC. I love the casual vibe and the service is solid, even with the difficulties in getting staff these days. Highly recommend reserving a table in advance, since they can get super busy, especially on peak days/times.
Nice Restaurant with lovely terrace outdoor protected seating, superbly located in the heart of Foggy Bottom, and GW (The George Washington University), diagonally across from Monroe Hall. Parking challenging but solvable. Good student / University vibe.
We made a reservation weeks ahead of time to celebrate our college-age daughter’s birthday with her friends. We also called ahead of time about the policies for bringing your own cake.
When we arrived, we were told that the only available table for us was very close to the jazz band playing and that it might be loud. We took it and it was loud. To Tonic’s credit, a short time after we were seated, they offered us another table in a different quieter area, which was much better.
The food was decent, but our sense was that the servers were brand new and weren’t sure what they were doing.
I communicated with the staff about the cake during the meal since they hadn’t reached out to me even though I had spoken with them when I brought the cake in before the guest of honor arrived. At the appointed time, 2 servers delivered the cake in the box, with no candles and no singing. It was literally the worst restaurant birthday celebration I have ever seen. They also charged a $25 cake fee, which we were told about and were happy to pay, but we thought we’d get a little more festivity for our money.
The bottom line is that I would not recommend Tonic for a special occasion. It is much more suited to a drink and an appetizer.
I get that the service industry is short-staffed and our waitress truly did her very best; however, that is no explanation for the poor quality of the food.
Drink orders: Ten minutes after order, waitress returned to inform husband they did not carry Stoly's Vodka. Even longer to receive Titos and Club.
Club soda for me: no straw, little ice.
I ordered a burger. What could go wrong? STALE bun and tasteless/unseasoned, dry meat. Awful. Salt shaker contained a cube of salt, as it was left in humidity all summer from the looks of it.
Hubby had pulled pork platter: scoop of BBQ pork, small square of cornbread (that did somewhat absorb the pat of butter), small dish of lukewarm mac & cheese, and the crowning glory...ONE onion ring.
I had never been to this restaurant before. Their outdoor seating, which is first come-first served, is really fun and perfect for a nice day outside. It was very popular, so quite crowded, but we didn't feel unsafe. They are VERY understaffed, so it took forever to order/pay at the bar, and we had to wait for our food for some time, too. The food is okay, mostly bar food and lots of tater-tot options. I'd recommend it for the outdoor space, but don't go if you're in a hurry.
Cool place to eat. Ambiance and esthetics were awesome.
I was looking for a non-stuffy place to eat before the Jim Gaffigan Stand-Up Comedy Event at DAR Constitution Hall on Friday night. This was the perfect place! My husband enjoyed the beer flight, very cleverly served in an actual plane. I enjoyed the Mangorita…tasted like liquid sorbet-SO GOOD! This restaurant is enveloped in the George Washington Campus. It caters to a younger crowd, however, it’s an amazing place where you can explore their “lending library” and outdoor patio. But the BEST part is you can have the lightest, crunchiest, flavorful TATER TOTS dinner you’ve ever had! (Best thing ever you might miss from youth) Tim’s Chicken Tots are amazing in the Sweet Thai Chili sauce, too! Afterwards, it was a very short walk to Constitution Hall. Absolutely will do this again!
Great food ! Service was friendly and accommodating.
Had hamburger, delicious
Nachos were soggy
Fries were great
It was awesome! Thank y’all!!!
Burnt the gluten free pizza, messed up the vegetarian order. Waited 40-60 minutes for the food to arrive.
The server was very kind and funny. The food was delicious.
I've eaten here two times already, and I will be back for more.
Just wasn't good. Went for brunch, won't be going back. Egg yokes on the coffee cup when it came out, something on the fork when unwrapped. Grits and eggs Benedict had no flavor, pancakes were bland. Best flavor came from the tatter tots. From cleaniness, flavor and service it was all a miss.
Service had great energy!
The tatertots & sauces are yummy!!
It was ok - maybe happy hour would be better
Good basic American fare in a very nice terrace with great and friendly service and generous portions.
Tonic is a wonderful diner to eat and bring guest to. It is an accommodating and warm environment with a great menu and friendly staff.
Great staff. Very friendly and attentive. The place has multiple options for seating that offer different experiences. Indoor, outdoor, multi floor and various layouts.
The food was great! Looked good and tasted great! Nice mix of items on the menu and all at very reasonable prices. We went for dinner, and I saw things on the menu I wanted, soi came back for lunch and dinner the next day.
I moved away from DC several years ago. This was the first time we have all been together since the beginning of the pandemic. Great place for our large group to get together. Service was outstanding!!
The food, the server was great!
The food was absolutely amazing. Good menu selections, and all for a reasonable price. The service however could’ve been better. We only saw our waitress twice, when ordering and when the food arrived. She never came back to the table to check on us. Had to go ask for the check
Service was great, food portions were big. Devil’s backbone beer was smooth.
Great food, solid service, and good prices, especially at Happy Hour. Fun, casual ambience. This is definitely a solid local watering hole where you might run into government employees, college students, hospital workers, or private sector folks, all just hanging out and having a good time. The staff is working extra hard these days, so definitely important to recognize the extra effort they’re putting in.
Food was excellent! I had the Memphis burger. Wow!
The server-in-training and her trainer were both great.
Slow inattentive service. Good drinks decent food fair prices
The food it was amazing! And The service it was fast! Will go back for sure!
Good menu variety. Indoor and outdoor options are nice.
I reserved a table for 10 but we were provided only a table for 8. And were informed that the TVs could not be changed, leaving us with Grey's Anatomy as our ambience. And no actual service at our table - had to go back and forth to bar.
My wife, my daughter and I dropped in mid-afternoon on July 6 for lunch. Food was very good (salmon for my wife, veggie burger for my daughter, regular burger for me) and the service was attentive but not overbearing. Ambiance was very good as well, Wimbledon on one TV, Tour de France on another, Euros on a third.
Restaurant was unprepared for the number of tables they tried to serve. We arrived and were seated on theme, ordered fairly quickly and just waited for over an hour. “Kitchen is backed up” actually says “ we took more orders than we could handle”. Our need to leave forced us to immediately box up our meals when they did finally arrive after 70 minutes. The food was not particularly enjoyable cold.
Great place for lunch. Their signature Tater-tots in multiple incarnations is comfort food waiting to be eaten. Everything on the menu is excellent but the Memphis Burger is popular. Both of my colleagues ordered one. Highly recommend, but make sure you make reservations. It can get busy.
Brunch on the back patio was fabulous! Great service and frosé with lots of shade and comfy lounge seating good for our group of 6. Very accommodating to for my pup as well. Would definitely go back!
Tonic Happy Hour is one of the best deals in DC. Love that it's so close to GW.
Not somewhere I would go back. Food was fine but service was bad. Water and drink glasses were always empty.
Wow! That is all I have to say, the hubs and I were looking for a cute place to grab a drink and enjoy dinner. To say we found a new favorite is an understatement. The food was spectacular, I now dream of the chicken tots. We sat on the patio and enjoyed the surrounding quiet Neighboor’s vibes. Truly can’t wait to go back.
Ordered a breakfast burrito with no bacon, they offered tofu instead. Then they charged me $5 extra for it. Also had my beer blown off the table (outside) when a big gust of wind came through. They said “no worries accidents happen, we will bring another one” and then charged us for both beers. Crap experience, crap service, mediocre food.
Great Brunch and the outdoor seating was spread out and plentiful!
Great service! Great food. Love their specialty cocktail, the Painkiller😊 there was table near that were so loud we struggled to hear to order and conduct business. That part was extremely annoying! The charm and ambiance was amazing. The vibe of the neighborhood was beautiful. Definitely recommend!
