The Union Oyster House, located on the Freedom Trail, near Faneuil Hall, enjoys the unique distinction of being America's oldest restaurant. This Boston fixture, housed in a building dating back to Pre-Revolutionary days, started serving food in 1826 and has continued ever since with the stalls and oyster bar, where Daniel Webster was a constant customer, in their original positions.

Makes no sense that people that make reservations can't request an outside table over those that are waiting. Also a side salad should be an option for side

This was my first time back in a restaurant since March 2020, so perhaps my memory is skewed; however: I found the food and the service just awful compared to what I remember it being like a decade ago (the last time I was in Ye Old Union Oyster House). We (my 76 year old mother, her 70+ year old travel companion and I) arrived for our 6:30 reservation but still had to *stand* for nearly 15 minutes to wait for a table. Once seated, we were brought water and cornbread fairly promptly, but the waitstaff was not masked as the website promised. We were not told any daily specials (perhaps there were none). It then took an additional 15 minutes for (our very nice, but quite harried) waitstaff person to come back to take drink orders (we slipped in a couple of soups). Drinks came fairly promptly with the soups (maybe 10 minutes), but it took an additional 15 minutes before we could put in entree orders; it was 7:30 by that time. It was near to 8pm by the time entrees were served; and that was disappointing in that the portions were much smaller than they used to be, along with being more expensive. Inflation is an issue, I do understand that, but it felt like the quality of things, even the mashed potatoes, has suffered. The waitstaff did bring complementary cake for my mother, as it was her birthday, and that was delicious! In conclusion: food quality has suffered; waitstaff is kind but clearly overwrought and therefore service is very slow. This nearly 200 year-old restaurant seems to be best as a tourist destination. I would not recommend to area residents.

We went for Summer Restaurant Week. The ambience in this really old Colonial era restaurant was fascinating with interesting displays and signs to read about its history. Our waitress was wonderful and was managing a number of other tables as well with efficiency and grace. The clam chowder was delicious with small tender pieces in a rich creamy base. My companion had a skewer of perfectly cooked large shrimp which looked delicious. I was a bit disappointed with my fried oysters which were small and somewhat tough with breading which made them kind of tasteless. I was surprised that they weren't better. Dessert was a hot apple cobbler. I would go again and try another entree.

Would I eat here again - no. This eating hall cannot be called a restaurant. The clam chowder was the only decent part of my meal. I had the restaurant week 3 course meal from this pub made by what can only guess was a teenage cook. The food is haphazardly thrown together and we were charged outrageously for the disappointing experience. My last night in Boston did not end the way I had planned.

Dirty, spider webbs on wall, everything seemed fryed, 182$ for 2 and litterally everything except the clam showder was fryed… clam showder was way too liquid and seemed not to contain anything but potatos. Service was close to inexistant with a waitress that looked anything but interested in working there or helping with the menu or drinks or anything for That matter… Absolute negative experience.

Our experience overall was good. We were celebrating our 45th wedding anniversary. The food was good and delivered hot. Our waiter was very good, attentive and friendly. The only drawback was our son called ahead to have dessert delivered to our table as an anniversary surprise and we never received it. Not sure what happened.

The clam chowder was bland and Luke warm. The French onion soup was barely warm and very little cheese, didn’t even cover the top of the crock. I didn’t know FOS could be made so poorly, little flavor. Scallops over priced and also tasteless. Would NEVER recommend this place. Very sad to have such a high rating from people.

Loved the restaurant itself, however, our server was awful! She said she had been there 8 years (not sure how) but she never smiled, did not tell us the specials for the night (after we waited a while after being seated to even see her), we had to remind her to replenish our drinks, she did not check back with us to see how our dinners were and she just seemed like we were putting her out. The food was good though!

The clam chowder was very good, and the lobster mac and cheese was quite good as well. The shrimp was extremely bland which made the linguine plate nothing special. The food was “fine”…but for what we paid, we wouldn’t suggest it to other unfortunately. We had high hopes, so it was a little disappointing.

This is not a good restaurant, starting with pretentious host, the poor service, and the bad food. The Oysters were good, but that's the only redeeming quality. Let me describe the experience. The host was rude and acted as if the restaurant existed because of him. We ordered a bottle of wine, for which the server brought it to our table, then left without opening it, pouring it, and asking if it was right. I have never had to open my own bottle of wine at a restaurant before--this was a first! My wife ordered the Lazy Man Lobster, which was terrible, and the description on the menu was not accurate. It was more of sweet, candied bake, where the crust was overpowering with sweetness which also diminished the minimal lobster within. I ordered the shrimp and scallop dinner. The meal was served cold, as if it were sitting on the counter for a long time. It also came with a huge amount of rice with cream sauce which again overpowered the minimal shrimp and (cold) scallops. The used the oldest trick in the book--minimize the protein and load on the carbs. This restaurant is blessed to have a terrific location and popularity, but there is no quality whatsoever. I would have expressed my concern to our server if I thought it would have made a difference. I strong suggest not supporting this over-hyped, over-priced, disappointment of a restaurant. Around the corner in Faneuil Hall, there is a casual patio restaurant with blue/white umbrellas called the Salty Dog. They have much better service and food, and the prices are good. I wish we had gone there for dinner. We will never eat at the Union Oyster House again.

The experience was incredible. I was a little shocked by the high price for just 8 lobster ravioli. It was not that much lobster to warrant $40 price tag, but it was very good. I would not order it again due to the price only. This was my first time in Boston so I had to have a slice of Boston cream pie and it was simply one of my favorite desserts I have ever had. Normally I have no room for dessert, but the pre-meal cornbread, lobster ravioli left the perfect amount of room to really enjoy the dessert and I left very satisfied.
