About

Restaurateurs Vittorio Assaf and Fabio Granato brought their love for French culture and cuisine to New York City by giving the Big Apple an authentic slice of France when they opened Brasserie Cognac de Monsieur Ballon in April 2008. Located in the theater district and frequented by celebrities, businessmen, locals and tourists, the setting is both exciting and charming. The Brasserie style menu offers French classics . Guests can choose to dine in the outdoor sidewalk café, casual original French bakery, classic main dining room, lively bar/lounge or the private Cognac Room as they enjoy meals complimented by 102 varieties of cognac and a gorgeous wine list including first-growth Bordeaux sold by the glass.

Maybe I expected more from a French-style restaurant in the middle of Manhattan, in terms of atmosphere, service and the taste of food. The expectations never matched what was presented to me. Most importantly, the quality and taste of the food disappointed me and my guests. We left the restaurant with half-filled plates and some hunger. The service was friendly and adequate but never personable. The atmosphere was comfortable. The menu selection was what you would expect from a French restaurant. I actually ordered paella, a non-traditional French dish. It was well-cooked but lacked any significant "paella" flavor. It almost felt under seasoned. My guests said the same thing. Overall, not the greatest eating experience, and not the worst. However, with the multitude of food choices around the area, I will be going elsewhere.

I have loved this restaurant ever since my company moved into the neighborhood in 2005. Sadly they are closing this location but will reopen in the fall nearby.

We had post-theatre matinee reservation and not busy when we were seated. Took awhile for server to notice us, which did not start well. But when we waved someone down and asked if our server was coming soon, we got lot of attention after that. My group was pleased with beet salad with chicken, octopus salad and the Cognac Chef's burger. Pleased too that restrooms on on same level as restaurant, so no descent into a basement. Overall, pleased with the food and location.

Brasserie Cognac is one of a dying breed--the affordable French brasserie in midtown Manhattan--and so, despite its flaws, I love it. And now that I no longer live in New York, but come in only on occasional visits, I make it a point to eat there. My last visit, yesterday, was for their Sunday brunch. The service was excellent, as was the choice of entrees on the prix fix brunch. The food was uneven--the poached eggs on my Scottish Eggs Benedict were close to hard-boiled--but I didn't mind, since, overall, I was happy to be in such a civilized place in the middle of Manhattan mayhem.

I think the menu has a nice variety of choices, but overall i think it is overpriced. They have a pre fixe for theater goers well priced, but the choices are limited.

My friend ordered a mixed salad $13, a mimosa $13 just 3 scallops on a smear of bernaise $32 and cappuchino $4.50.

I ordered a Sangria $13 and the chicken paillard $26. Mine was tasteless the chicken was pounded crepe thin.

Oddly, the outdoor tables had clothes and the indoor tables did not.

Probably better off going for their all day menu which had soup and sandwiches.

Charming place, great for people watching. My beef bourgignon was unusual in that it was 2 braised short ribs accompanied by vegetable with little sauce. It was tasty, but different.

One of the worst dining experiences we’ve had in years. Terrible service: no serving ware, had to ask repeatedly for napkins, condiments delivered when meal was half finished, appetizer delivered after main course with no apology or explanation...and it wouldn’t have come at all if we hadn’t hunted down the server. We will never go back.

Very good service, everything else was fair. With a plentiful choice of French restaurants in the city, would not recommend or return. With its location, probably more for tourists.

We were looking for a restaurant near Carnegie Hall and Cognac fit the bill. On Memorial Day it was very quiet and we were able to snag a lovely outdoor table. North of Times Square on a quiet part of Broadway we were not bothered by any traffic. My son cleared his plates and enjoyed every mouthful. My onion soup was unfortunately sub-par: the broth lacked depth of flavor. I really enjoyed my glass of rose wine, though.

Brasserie Cognac never disappoints with its delicious French cuisine, lovely atmosphere, and attentive staff. It's always our mainstay after going to the theater or the ballet and will continue to be. The location is in the heart of midown at 55th and Broadway, and it's a hop and a skip to get to. In a city with thousands of restaurants, Brasserie Cognac is at the top of my list, and surely many others feel the same way. A myriad of scrumptious selections await the Cognac diner, and the biggest decision is what gourmet dish to chose. So, if you want your palate to say "Merci," go to Brasserie Cognac aujourd'hui!

The only thing I would ask of this facility is to highlight the gluten free menu items and perhaps add some gluten free breads so that the fondue ( delicious ) could be enjoyed all guests .

The location was great for a pre-Carnegie Hall meal, but the service from our waiter was a big disappointment. He seemed to lose interest as soon as we declined to order alcohol. It was difficult to get his attention, and when he approached us at all he was very abrupt. The food was okay, but not great, with the exception of the crab cake (per the person who ordered it). All in all, I would give Brasserie Cognac a qualified recommendation.

Always a lovely time. We had a very nice and attentive waiter. The roast chicken was delicious and perfect comfort food for a rainy night pre-theater. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who needs a go to restaurant in that area.

We allotted 1.5 hours for pre theater dinner. We ordered two hamburgers which took 1 hour and 10 minutes to cook. First course took about 35 minutes to serve onion soup that nobody enjoyed because it was so laden with black pepper. Won’t ever go back.

We went on a Saturday night before the theater. They were very accommodating. The service was very good as was the food. Terrific scallops and steak frites. Delicious pork chop, but not very hot. Branzino was disappointing. Not very much fish for the price and too much sauce etc. But we will definitely go back.

Delicious UES French Brassiere with consistency in their mussels meunière, steak frites and we always love to start with cheesy gougeres or share the cheese soufflé. Do try the tartars for a starter and finish off with tarte tartan or a decadent chocolate soufflé

Just an ok meal. Have been eating here a about twice per year for several years and quality going down. Weak wine list and even on this wine list, many selections were out of inventory. Waiter did not have good command of list or what to suggest when a bottle was out. Inattentive service when only half the tables were in service. Not bad, but nothing special about the food.

We have never had a bad experience. We travel to the city at least once a year and we make it a point to come and eat at Brasserie Cognac. My wife loves the soufflé and believes it is the best she has ever had. Sitting in the window and watching the people on the street is a great way to spend an afternoon while you dine on wonderful food and are treated to impeccable service.

I love this restaurant, and have eaten there more than 20 times in the last few years. But this visit was an aberration. There was only one waiter for the entire dining room. He was doing his best, but we waited a long time to place our orders (he kept running away from our table to take care of other things.) Two of us ordered the French Onion Soup, which is a favorite. Instead of a bowl of soup we got a ramekin with about four spoonfuls of soup under the bread and cheese. I complained to the manager and he took the soups off our bill. We then saw other tables being served full bowls of soup. On my club sandwich, the bread was soggy and not toasted. A friend's hamburger was over-cooked, and another friend's mac and cheese was very bland. After we finished our entrees we sat at an empty table trying to get coffee. Our soup, sandwiches and coffee took over 1 1/2 hours -- and we had to basically run to make our curtain time.

The best word to describe Brasserie Cognac is "civilized"; best, of course, when we got there early, bit to never go as terribly noisy as too many restaurants are today.

Service was dysfunctional.
We had to ask twice for basket of bread.
Had to ask twice for a basket of gougères we had ordered. We’re not served any water after initial glass. Again asked 3 times. We also had ordered a ginger ale. It came very watery. Waiter came back and said “sorry no ginger ale today “
Even if the food was good we will probably not be back.
