Seated at an out of the way table and promptly forgotten about. Service was non existent and it took a good 45 minutes before our food came out. This was was after waiting 20 minutes before anyone felt like taking our order. Entree prices at lunch $$. So many other places to eat, can’t imagine coming back here.
It was crowded but it took a terribly long time especially for someone, Dr. Brem, who eats there a lot. And, when we asked various people about it... all they would say is "it's on its way." I had to get up and speak to the manager.
The service and brunch at Ris was the exceptional dining experience I come to expect from Ris. I have never had a bad experience at Ris. The kale and Brussel sprout salad provided crunch, sweetness, saltiness and powerful flavors in each bite...a must have!
My only issue was the condition of the rest room. We were one of the first customers at Ris for Sunday brunch. The bathrooms looked as through they were not cleaned for several days. A concern for me as I wonder what the cleaning schedule for the kitchen must be.......
We've been to Ris several times, usually to have dinner with friends before walking over to the Kennedy Center (where we park in advance). Food is excellent, with creative combination of flavors. The vegetarian options are not afterthoughts. It is not far from Metro. We have not tried it at 7-8 on weekends, but mid-week the sound level is moderate and holding conversations is easy as long as an ambulance isn't trying to make it to GW Hospital.
Ground salt - not pepper - was put on salads. When one guest complained that the salad was too salty, the salad was replaced, but there was no apology. We asked to take home the remaining portion of chicken pot pie. We were not asked whether or not we also wanted the remaining salad and the chicken pot pie was put on top on the salad. How can the chicken pot pie be reheated? No consideration. No training.
This was a great find! I’m glad we had reservations, although we came right when it opened for dinner. The grilled artichoke for appetizer was sublime. Both entres were tasty, generously proportioned, and nicely presented. Wait staff was marvelous. Everyone raves about the butterscotch pudding, so we had it, but I found it a little on the thick side for a pudding. Tasty though.
Food was great as was the service! It was a quiet lovely evening to celebrate a birthday.
RIS is an excellent restaurant with great food, great wines, great honey bush tea and great service.
Excellent dinner and service in a friendly and quietatmosphere
Cheery bright delicious imaginative pleasant healthy efficient comfortable attractive thoughtful
Ris is a safe choice. Convenient, food selections limited but offers something for everyone. Everyone likes it. Service is not the best but functional.
Great experience. Celebrated a birthday. Had a booth which was nice and quiet.
A surprise birthday for two of us at brunch. A lovely menu: I had a starter of endive, blue cheese and walnut salad, and then a main of vegetable egg scramble with home fries. Lots of good food, and very attentive service. Good ambiance in which we could talk to each other without raising our voices.
We were looking for a place for brunch with vegan/vegetarian options and RIS definitely fit the bill. The food was terrific and portions were fine, but the service left a bit to be desired. We were pretty much invisible to the staff for the 1st 15 minutes and getting the waiter's attention was not easy throughout. We ordered three coffees and got one.
We were also surprised that coffee/tea was not included in a prix fixe meal and priced at 15% of the meal to boot.
Definitely recommended, but know what you're getting.
Ris is one of the culinary treasures in DC. The food is always wonderful and the seasonal changes are a great way to feature Chef Ris' talents. The addition of the house-made tonics to feature with their phenomenal gin selection is not to be missed. Oh - make sure to save room for the butterscotch pudding!
The restaurant definitely needs more vegetarian options. The one offered was repeated twice under two categories (spaghetti squash) and then there was a green starter salad.
The appetizers were really special, I had the best artichoke I've ever had, which I did not expect to say in a review. This was a great place to go before the theater.
Great atmosphere, great service, great food. An excellent dining experience.
What a great place to dine in DC. Beautiful space, creative food and excellent service
Being a foodie from California, I would highly recommend RIS. Fresh ingredients, great flavor and nice size portions with good presentation.
Service and ambiance great
Food was good but not excellent
I had Friday special of fried scallops and girlfriend had chicken for reference
They might have better choices on menu
Not good enough for me to go back or recommend
The food was excellent - appetizers, dinner and desert. Prepared and served well. Quite enjoyable evening with family and friends. Highly recommend.
Such a friendly neighborhood restaurant! The food is delicious, changes by the season, and the service is personable and prompt.
I enjoyed the ambiance. A perfect place to catch up with an old friend and talk without being rushed. Our server was the right amount of attentive. The carpaccio was outstanding and was the squash with hazelnuts. Sadly my etouffe entree was disappointing. Shrimp and crawfish over cooked.
Excellent food--however had to wait over 1 hour for food; unfortunately, there was a large party being served at the same time. Staff kept apologizing for delay/wait. Was our second time to visit this wonderful restaurant. Just such a shame this happened. Hope it doesn't happen again.
Went there twice on a recent trip to DC. Both meals were excellent. The menu is not particularly inventive but all dishes were prepared perfectly. Service was outstanding both times.
One of those places that you don’t mind the expense. The service experience was beyond exceptional. The food, while differentiatedly good- was also hot! Attention to detail is the star here- in the food and in the service.
I had delicious black bean soup and the crayfish entree with rice, shrimp etc. My wife had a cauliflower entree that was all decked out with a beautiful presentation and she said the food itself was absolutely delicious. We had gone by Ris many times but this was a first actually eating there. The dining room was about three quarters full at 6:45pm BUT we could hear each other. How nice! So many other restaurants in the DC area, we simply can't hear each other or our guests. NO loud music, no TVs blaring or staring. We were blown away by a wonderful, healthy, full meal---even without dessert. The portions were very ample. We will be back as regulars.
A return visit did not match the previous great experience. Special black bean soup was boring. Special deep fried scallops were excellent in a tempura-type batter. But portion was too small. Plate was covered in mundane French fries - no ketchup or confinement for the fries, but excellent Tarter sauce for the scallops. Boring apple tarte/cobbler for desert. Stand-offish server.
This is the best restaurant I have been to in a long time. The food was divine and the service outstanding. The waiter and kitchen were so accommodating to my garlic and onion allergy — very much appreciated. Can’t wait to go back!
Three waiters served us -- with little communication between them. Second waiter told us of specials -- then third waiter returned 15 minutes later to tell me that the trout special I ordered was really a salmon special. My wife ordered cabbage & kale dish that arrived with no cabbage. Service was very slow.
We've eaten here many times, and generally rate it quite highly. But on this occasion, the Sunday night menu was limited, and several offerings we not available. We went elsewhere.
We like Ris very much, have been a few times and admire it's special touches, like the extensive list of speciality gins and their home made tonics. Nobody else in DC is doing this far as I know. The server (Kamal) was attentive, personable and very good. Two of our group had the chicken Milanese with roast potatoes and it was delicious, the only problem with the dish concerned the potatoes. A few of them were undercooked - not acceptable for an entree costing $30.00 - surely it's essential to check doneness before sending out a dish? We told Kamal who relayed the info to the chef. That aside we had an excellent time at Ris and will be back.
I can alway count on Ris for great food, creative drinks, reasonable wine and fresh atmosphere. My favorite place to bring friends visiting from out of town. Ravi always makes us feel special at the bar!
Waiter forgot part of order and was not familiar with menu. Some food items were excellent. But appetizer presentation was poor and not very good. Overall very disappointed.
Our server was impeccable as was the dinner. We had a lot of questions and she took care of everything.
outstanding happily memorable meal --palate pleasing and truly heartwarming--cozy, perfect combination of lively while being peaceful--atmosphere stimulates conversation and every bite of food delicious as well as a feast to behold--creative without being fussy--welcoming, satisfying, habit forming--top notch.
Always love dining at Ris!
Prior to booking your reservation, check the Brunch menu directly with the restaurant. We were expecting steak and eggs per the website menu, and were disappointed when we arrived and realized steak and eggs were not part of the brunch menu. Our burger and shrimp and grits orders were very good! All of the food was very good, with the exception of our late arriving fried okra.
