Our server was impeccable as was the dinner. We had a lot of questions and she took care of everything.

Prior to booking your reservation, check the Brunch menu directly with the restaurant. We were expecting steak and eggs per the website menu, and were disappointed when we arrived and realized steak and eggs were not part of the brunch menu. Our burger and shrimp and grits orders were very good! All of the food was very good, with the exception of our late arriving fried okra.
Ris is uniformly excellent and I always know my friends or associates will enjoy their meal. The service is also excellent. Two of us had the grilled Salmon Niçoise with perfectly cooked green beans, tomatoes,
olives, anchovy, pan crisped potatoes, beet pickled egg & caper aioli. Superb and the salmon was perfectly grilled and delicious. Another in my party had Chicken Milanese with lemon-parmesan crust, prosciutto and arugula salad, garlic roasted potatoes, aioli. He thought it was the best chicken milanese he had ever had and he's a foodie from NYC. It was not at all noisy and the ambiance is gracious. Don't miss the cocktails or the butterscotch pudding with a cocoa crisp & whipped cream. ~ TADS
Fantastic food and ambiance! We were there with a party of nine. Every dish was incredible from the starters to the main course to the desserts. On top of that I love gin and had a gin martini perfectly served with a gin recommended by the bartender based on my taste. I can’t say enough good things. We are from California and were in DC moving our son to college. Very close to GWU. Will be back!!
Does not disappoint. I didn't know, but ordered and enjoyed a pre-theatre menu. Waitstaff was very accommodating in getting us out quickly. Very lovely dinner!
Very disappointing. Food was not remarkable whatsoever and for the prices charged, we should have experienced some level of 'wow factor'... not worth the money is the clearest descriptor I can put forward for this restaurant. Menu is very lacking in true originality. Its not difficult to find small regional chains that do just as good if not better prep and charge half the price.
Venue itself was classy and dignified, service was acceptable. I wont be a repeat diner...too many other good places to enjoy to give this a second chance.
Service was great but food was not what was expected. Chicken Milanese breading was burnt and chicken had a lot of muscle/tendon which made it gross to eat. The sauce was too thick
The service was very good, and the food was excellent: well prepared and delicious. Our group had steak, fish and vegetarian dishes, all were wonderful. The handcrafted cocktail was wonderful. Would absolutely come back.
Another great dinner at RIS. Wonderful food, friendly and attentive service. We were given nice out of the way booth that allowed for easy conversation. An extra thanks to the host staff after retrieving my forgotten umbrella while I waited for my Uber.
Excellent service although the food was just ok. I was expecting a nice presentation.
The server was great and very funny and courteous! Even though it was the restaurant week and we wanted the chef to be creative to assemble an entree that would be vegetarian with no garlic and truffles and use whatever they have for other meat dishes. It turned out to be great! We were very pleased with the meal. Will go back again!
During restaurant week (August) very slow service from the kitchen
return visit for RW-loved the food-salmon tartare, chicken salad sandwich and dessert. Unfortunately the butterscotch dessert was very late in arriving. I had to leave my table, request check and dessert to go. Very busy place when I left, kitchen should have had more staffing.
Great neighborhood asset. Service is personable. Food changes seasonably. There are menu options for vegans, vegetarian and omnivores. Superior butterscotch pudding.
The food in general is not bad. Our waiter was also pretty nice and attentive. When this other waiter asked if we were done with the main course, my friend asked to pack up the side dish he didn't finish but quite liked so wanted to take home and we got some very judgmental (in an amusing way) response from the waiter, as if he wasn't suppose to care about the side potatoes and vegetables at all. Interesting end of the dinner.
It was our first time at the restaurant for restaurant week and we were very pleased with our dining experience. The portions were big and the food was delicious. Overall, it was a great value and very enjoyable dinner.
Dined here as part of Restaurant Week and a friend's recommendation and I was not disappointed. From the moment we arrived we were greeted by the Manager and immediately seated at a quiet little table with a view of DC. We were early and the restaurant was quiet as it was before the normal dining hour; however, while we were there we noted the arrival of others for their reservations and several groups. Noise level was vibrant but you could hear the conversation of your party.
The food was simply amazing to include grilled artichokes, chicken milanese, and in lieu of dessert I opted for a wonderful glass of their Sauvignon Blanc. Would I choose to dine here again...absolutely and will recommend it to friends and family as a great little spot that is off the beaten path.
This is my second visit to Ris and I have to say that my second visit completely rehabilitated the impression from my first dining experience at Ris. It has been well over a year since my first visit but I will definitely be returning to Ris more frequently now.
With respect to my most recent visit, my impressions improved from the start when it seemed that the host greeted me like a V.I.P. (warm welcome, pleasant smile, and verified that my reservation was for a business meeting and confirmed that my table was satisfactory). I was there to celebrate my guest’s recent sale (real estate) and the reservation was part celebration/part business.
We later learned that the host was actually the maître d’ (Stephen). This became more evident when we asked his food recommendations and he explained the dishes to a fine detail of a chef or as if he were the chef that had prepared the menu. This was a pleasant change from what I am accustomed when the wait staff merely repeats menu ingredients quickly.
Unbeknownst to us, we dined during restaurant week and so we ordered off the restaurant week menu. What we appreciated was that Ris offered a wine menu (about 5 options for reds) to match the price point for the food menu. This made ordering the second bottle of wine a no brainer since we were Ubering home.
The main meals (chicken milanese and the hanger steak) were fine but you definitely need to save room for dessert. We tried the butterscotch pudding and the flourless chocholate torte and I'm one hundred percent sure I will visit just for the dessert..perhaps during a happy hour. Perhaps a future menu item could be a pudding/flourless chocolate torte? Just a suggestion.
My dinner guest commented that she would be bringing clients to Ris in light of the excellent service and since the ambiance was moderately loud for a restaurant and conducive to business meetings.
Overall, I will definitely be recommending Ris.
Well you don’t expect a lot from restaurant week and I’m glad I didn’t. The only two options on the menu for 35$ was two courses and a glass of house wine or three courses of which the only main course option sans 3-5$ add on charge was a cauliflower dish. As two comparisons, we ate at both La Piquette and The Occidental. La Piquette had a full menu with only one add on charge for foie gras. The Occidental had a varied menu with perhaps two items with add on charges but gave each of us a glass of champagne and coffee afterwards for no additional charge. To be fair all three places had side dishes as an additional charge. All that being said RIS was not a place I would return to.
RIS is the best restaurant in DC—creative carefully prepared food with great flavor, served beautifully and in a gracious, welcoming, lovely atmosphere.

The iRISistible summer delights by Chef Lacoste totally and fantastic service by Kareem won me and my dining companion over. Being restaurant week happened to make it an even more terrific value!
The primary attraction for us was the Scallop Margarita, which we enjoyed 16 years ago when Chef Lacoste was at the helm of 1789 Restaurant. It was every bit as good as we remembered it. However, the Miso Salmon Tartare and Hoisin-Glazed Jumbo Shrimp stole the show as the tartare's outstanding spectrum of flavors, aromas, and textures made for a truly standout dish, while the shrimp was a true delight in range of flavors, colors, and refreshing layers (shrimp over salad over rice). The other entree, Lemon+Parmesan-crusted Chicken Milanese, was deliciously abundant and yet another example of superb execution and stellar composition.
For dessert, the Flourless Chocolate Torte--super recommendation by Kareem--was wonderfully straightforward with dense and deep chocolate paired with refreshing berries (fruit, compote, coulis), mint, and whipped cream, and the Peach Cobbler (special request for the bright Passion Fruit Sorbet instead of plain Vanilla Ice Cream) was warm and comforting (the lovely biscuit topping was the highlight).
From start (Kareem thoughtfully brought us hot water for our lemon tea in an attractive earthenware pot) to finish was a lunch of masterful cuisine and welcoming, helpful, and professional service!
I booked an early brunch and when arrived there was practice no one else so it was nice and quiet. The servers were out of the way nice, they made very good recommendations and the food was great.
The restaurant was gracious with the delayed arrival of our other guest. Two of us ordered the fried scallops featured every Friday. I was disappointed with the portion size (four scallops) for the price ($25) compared to the feature fish of the day for the same price which was far more generous. I will definitely return but will skip the daily specials.
Excellent dining and food choices were amazing! Our server for the evening Kareem ,was beyond excellent with service , information regarding the menu and just an all around great guy!
Went for a late brunch. Great food, but service was a little slow. I think the waiter held off on firing our entrees, and when we mentioned that we needed to leave in 20 minutes for a show, the entrees arrived at minute 18. Probably a communication issue on both sides, but 50 minutes between apps and entrees is long by anyone's standards.
We have been here now three or four times for brunch on Sunday, before our Sunday Kennedy Center matinees. This restaurant is about a 15 minute walk from the Kennedy Center, so it is very convenient.
The atmosphere is lovely, the waitstaff attentive, and the food very good.
For brunch, we were served a lovely bread basket full of muffins and other sweet rolls. They were delicious. They also have bottomless mimosas in different flavors. There is a two-course brunch menu, with salad, yogurt, fruit and granola parfait, a cinnamon roll and other choices. For the main course, I have had the heuvos rancheros and shrimp and grits; the hamburger is good, too.
This is a perfect spot to go before the Kennedy Center.
We wanted to have a nice dinner on our last day during our Washington visit.
The restaurant was outstanding, very very warm-hearted and friendly welcome through a wonderful waitress! She was adorable and her recommended dishes the best we ever had. Just for the scallops margarita I would come back! Love this place, everything is fresh and had a great taste! Delicious dessert! Perfect wine!
Kareem makes your visit authentic. He has such an engaging personality and takes the time to exceed your needs and to share what the restaurant is known for and specials. I’ve been going to Ris for years. Never disappoints

We went prior to a show. Our res was at 5:30 and we arrived early. We were placed in a corner in a tiny booth in an empty restaurant. The booth was physically uncomfortable. It took 5+ minutes for the maitre d' to "find" another table for us. The restaurant literally had one other diner at that time. We explained that we were leaving early for a 7:30 show and said we'd be out quickly, and yet we couldn't figure out why it was so hard to find another table for us. The waiter explained that two large groups were coming (for the back room) and yet it was still difficult to find us a table. This seemed unusually difficult given the time. Unfortunately, this colored our point of view a bit. The food was delicious. Too bad the empty dining room was so confounding.
Once again Above and Beyond service!!!! This place is incredible. The servers are out of this world. The food is too good to be true. The flavors are incredible. The taste is phenomenal. We brought our family for a birthday party and they loved it so much they are having the next birthday there. That says a lot. Incredible chefs, incredible people. They put love into every bite. We are customers for life.
It was my wife's birthday and they went out of their way to make it special including personally printed menus. Menu selections were unique. Food well-presented.
Everything was outstanding, including the tequila cocktail.. We had the 3 course pre-theater menu. Portions were generous, the food was extremely fresh, and the execution was creative and very flavorful. I will definitely go back and have recommended it to multiple friends already. Thanks for really fun evening!
Three great "amigas". We went to celebrate my friend's birthday. The food was delicious, the attention to detail and the service was superb. Stephane provided the right service and stopped at the table only when needed to be attentive enough, but not overwhelming. The fish of the day was delicious been grilled to perfection. The butterscotch pudding was the right amount and tasty...
...but of course dessert was served to the B-day girl (lemon & olive oil cake with a little candle and very discreetly, we sang "Las mañanitas" to my friend as she have requested it. The nicest thing was to see Chef Ris honoring our table by coming to see us.. We had a fantastic girls night out
