Tar & Roses
With our heart beating in Southern California, we want to create a welcoming ambiance for all to come and celebrate food. Jonathan Gold of the Los Angeles Times, claimed that Tar & Roses "...may also mark the first time in our nation's history when cauliflower became more delicious than prime steak," and we love to push the limits when it comes to traditional ideas of food. With our rotating selection of local craft beer and our ever-changing menu, there is always something new and exciting to try.
When you step into Tar & Roses, you'll feel like you are coming home. We invite you to come share a meal with us.
What Insiders Are Saying
Tar and Roses exudes a classy calmness not often seen in this part of town.
Increíble!!!!!!!! Nos pedimos unas ribs deliciosas
Ambiance and service was amazing. Very tentative. Definitely going back
Absolutely fantastic food, highly recommended.
Great service, and pleasant ambience.
Great meal: Peas roasted w/mint, Chx liver mouse, Duck. Wow.
Great food, cool, laid back knowledgeable server. Difficult combo to pull off, but did a great job.
Food exceeded expectations.
Hostess was a smidge offputting when I asked for a better table.
UCLA graduation celebration - this was an outstanding restaurant, we could not have had a better meal, a better time, and a better experience. Thank you!
This was our first time here. The restaurant was excellent in all aspects: greeting experience, food, service, location, and ambiance. The only disappointing matter is that they do not have a full bar (only wines and beers). Otherwise, a wonderful place to dine and enjoy.
Tar & Roses has been one of our favorite restaurants for years. It is a place we take out of town guests to show them the best of quintessential LA cuisine. This is the first time we’ve been there where the food wasn’t up to snuff. Even the oxtail dumplings were a bit off. The seasonings were unbalanced all night and the amount of heat they added to the dishes masked their flavors rather than enhanced it. Hoping this was just an off night.
My 3rd time at this restaurant and loved it.
Sat at the bar, enjoyed awesome wine, appetizers and THEIR FRIED FISH OMG ! I definitely would return to try more dishes.
The noise level was excruciatingly PAINFUL & caused major lack of dining enjoyment. Will not return.
Delicious food, even for a vegetarian like me. The squash blossom gnocchi cannot be missed if you are veg. The service was great. A little loud, but overall a great place for Sharing delicious food
Amazing flavorful dinner and awesome service the whole team from host to support staff and management is impeccable! The whole fish is to die for ! And the strawberry crostata is a cant miss dessert!
Amazing food and atmosphere. Loved it! Went for my boyfriends bday and we were both happy
Everything was delicious- had the lamb kebab, duck confit bao, trumpet mushroom with soft egg and soft shell crab with mango and green papaya. Service attentive and all are so warm and friendly. Love this place! Wish it was closer to the South Bay.
We love this place!
T&R delivers more consistently than your paperboy in the 70’s to your friendly milkman in the 80’s, than your FedEx parcel man in the 00’s and Amazon Prime in the 10’s!
From London, to NYC and Rome to LA, T&R is the best restaurant we have been to. From 2 Michelin star restaurant to local trattoria and everything in-between, T&R fills our hearts with sheer, unadulterated joy.
The anticipation of visiting excites you like a 6 year old on Christmas Eve which only gets better when Santa brings batteries to go with your favourite toy car or for you Millennials a fully charge device that you can enjoy instantly!
When we are away, we miss T&R like a long lost friend who fills us with laughter, confidence and a sense of wellbeing which always ends with you asking yourself why you bother meeting up with anyone else and how on earth you don’t do it more.
The pride, passion and service of the T&R team in delivering outstanding, mouth bursting flavours of food that (on this occasion) began with cheeky minty peas as a snack, to the divinely rich and meaty ribs, followed by a rib eye steak seared over oak and perfectly cooked so it both lets in your mouth and provides a flavour that is makes your eyes roll backwards in pleasure! All matched with a fine selection of wines. All of this is somehow pipped by the unique Strawberry Ricotta Crostata and honeycomb ice cream, that cause your to giggle like that first cinema date and forces you to go back for a second helping so you can indulge to excess.
Go, go again and tell the team I miss them dearly!
This is definitely a cozy, energetic hip restaurant for great get-togethers with a friend from the past. The ambiance is energetic full of conversations galore among the dining guests in attendance. It has a modern, architectural but very cozy atmosphere and the staff all the way from Manager to waiter to busboys pay attention to every detail to ensure you have good experience.
The food was very tasty and vibrant. Although there are no large portions served here, it's definitely a menu that you want to order as many different items and share. We had the Duck breast (so tender), Oxtail appetizer (much like a potsticker, and a house specialty), Squid ink Pasta (tangy), and beef (also tender). We also appetized on the Peas with Sea Salt & Mint (much like edamame but larger). Everything was cooked to perfection. We celebrated our daughter's graduation and they complimented with a cup of very good honeycomb ice cream (I would come back just for that!).
Innovative and delicious food. Excellent service. Can be a little noisy.
This place is amazing. It is a must try.
We were off to a shaky start because they were way behind on their reservations and kept us waiting about 25 minutes past our reservation time. I know whites wasn't their fault—people were lingering too long. However, staff was super gracious about it and once we were seated service was truly excellent and the food was too. Our table was a bit of a bummer because it's just a little too bathroom adjacent...if there was a way to screen that off somehow it sure would be nice. But A+ for service and kitchen
Always a slam dunk - oxtail dumplings and seafood pot were amazing! Great service too.
We ate all the things, and it was delicious.
New favorite restaurant! Every plate was amazing, the oxtail dumplings were delicious. Cant wait to be back.
Bone marrow NO NO
Soft Shell Crab NO NO
Food is OK but ambience is very marginal
The branzino Was very good as it was the previous times I’ve been there. However the artichokes which used to be roasted are now deep fat fried and were literally saturated with Oil It actually made me a little sick to my stomach. I told the manager and she said oh I’m so sorry. But did not see fit to take the offending dish off the bill which is the usual practice. There are many lovely dishes there however this visit was a true disappointment. I don’t see returning in the near future
WOW!!! Incredible service and incredible food! We ate at the bar and Paige was the best server EVER!! I highly suggest everybody eat here. We had the seafood pot, the bruschetta, the cauliflower, the soft shell crab, and he killer strawberry dessert. I cannot wait to go back. FABULOUS!!!!!!!

The server was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and wine list she was one of the best servers we had on our trip to Santa Monica. The food was absolutely amazing everything came out super fast and with so much attention to detail. If you want to be treated like a king for a day definitely come here.
Everything was extremely tasty and the server's recommendations were on point!!
Every time we go to Tar & Roses we have a perfectly delicious meal that leaves us with happy bellies and a wonderful feeling of a lovely night out. The spring take on the venison with the parsnip puree and the blueberry sauce was perfection. We always get the oxtail dumplings, which are magical and this time we tried the fried artichokes, which were perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. We love sitting in the patio, which is a lot more quiet and intimate. Always a great evening!
Wow! Great food and great dining experience! We are spoiled with great food in SF, but Tar and Roses was a special experience. Ever eaten st a place where you love every dish you order and want more? Also, great service from waitress to bus service to visit by co-owner/manager to our table. Craving to go back again.
Visiting from San Francisco for a weekend and read about T&R. We shared a variety of dishes starting with the yellowtail crudo and oxtail dumplings. The crudo was delicious - fresh, tart and bright with citrus, avocado and red pepper. The dumplings were juicy and flavorful. Next up were fried artichokes and roasted garlic drizzled with harissa yogurt—better than French fries! And spreading the garlic on a side of grilled bread was our inventive whim. The ribs were savory and would have fallen off the bone if they had any—not sure what the fried basil brought to the dish except color. The branzino with lemon risotto was amazing—and went really well with the mushrooms with a soft egg on top. The strawberry tart with honeycomb gelato was a grand finale to a wonderful meal. Our waiter was helpful and attentive. The only downside was the volume of noise and the tight spacing between tables.
Absolutely wonderful spot to eat in Santa Monica. Pricey yet not exorbitantly so. The service was top notch and the food could not have been better. Great all around
Experience was great, just didn’t like the fish and no cocktails which we wish we had
Tar and Roses hits it out of the park, every time. Simply one of the great dining experiences on the west coast.
Really love Tar & Roses. This restaurant is run beautifully, and the dishes are top notch, eclectic, artistic. To sit by the kitchen is to witness poetry in motion, and is just as memorable as the dishes themselves, which are prepared beautifully. The servers who take a moment to describe new dishes + wine pairing recommendations truly make all the difference. Such a lovely dreamy spot when the service aligns with the overall experience.
Visiting from out of town. Food was delicious! Service and attention to detail awesome. Definitely recommend. Fun restaurant!
The food was amazing. Each small plate had flavor, texture, and crunch. The chef put much thought into every aspect of every plate. The service was amazing and the atmosphere was beautiful. We were seated in the back room which was quieter and had more room between tables.
This was our first experience with this restaurant. We were celebrating our anniversary. The front of the house was very accommodating in trying to meet our special request of having side by side seating during a very busy evening. The menu is varied and interesting. The tapas style items are 'in the range' from a price point-of-view for excellent cuisine. The service level was great. Today, too many American restaurants think that the faster the service, the better the experience. WRONG. Tar & Roses understands that individual items need to be served as complementary items, with a reasonable time to consume the items, and a short break between courses to savor them. No plates getting cold at the table. Very knowledgeable on each of the menu items. Very attentive to the 'little things' that make a dining experience memorable. Good work Tar & Roses. We'll be back (if we can ever get a reservation). :)
One of the tricks on shared plates restaurants is finding the right balance and number of choices to satisfy a group’s tastes. Our server Jeffrey did a great job guiding us and pretty much everything was good to great. Best dishes were their famous popcorn with chilies and bacon, mushroom toast, roast cauliflower and fried artichokes. Branzino was excellent and cheesy potatoes insane. Sticky toffee pudding is a must for dessert. Ask for back room (patio) if you want to have a conversation
