The American Hotel
Of course, The American Hotel is more than just a hotel, it houses an excellent restaurant as well. There are multiple dining areas depending on what kind of experience guests are looking for. The Main Dining Room is a lively and rambunctious room that holds about 80 people while the Drew Room is a quieter, more private area for those looking for an intimate evening. The food is quintessential American cuisine from across the United States.

Love this place
Always one of our favorite go to restaurants. The salmon and seared tuna entrees were fabulous. We usually sit on the porch or in the secret garden, but loved the small back room we enjoyed last night. Can’t wait to have their duck again once Fall rolls around. Love that dish too. Although, we have never not enjoyed the many dishes we’ve tried. It’s all fabulous.
Excellent food and really enjoyed the outdoor patio.
Fabulous, as always... I have never had a bad meal here. Lovely.
Beautiful restaurant, awesome food and great service!
The food was fine but I deducted points for what may seem like a small matter. We ordered sandwiches which were expensive and asked for buns or good bread. The waiter said they only serve it on white bread. He was kind of apologetic saying he doesn’t make the rules so clearly
Others had the same problem. Seems insensitive to customers for the restaurant to do that.
Superb food with excellent service
We had a delightful meal ! Wine was great !
I think this restaurant is great if you’re over 70 seeking mediocre food. I wonder if it was a coincidence that my wife, who is a POC, went in first to get our table and we were stuck at a tiny table half embedded in a fern up against the server station. Many tables by the windows were available. Just saying…won’t be returning.
The food was a disappointment actually. It came out too fast. Whole meal felt rushed as if kitchen has it all premade. The mushroom soup tasted more like bean soup. The Dover sole was well presented but too firm, not melt in your mouth fish as one expects, especially for the price. . Our waiter Joseph was outstanding and we loved the rooms.
As usual great food and service. Wine list is best out here as is the menu.
I went for breakfast on Sun morning. It was if it was an inconvenience to the servers to ge there. The food choices for Sun bfast are eggs, eggs Benedict, french toast and maybe 2 other things. One kind of mimosa- classic. Our table was right by the steps and very busy. I felt like I was eating on the street. Not worth the money. I heard a better dinner place. Skip the breakfast.
As lovely as I remembered. Sitting on the porch for breakfast on Main St is a genuine treat.
Best of the best!
Wonderful, wonderful service
Didier is great
Fabulous wine list
We had a Drouhin Laguiche Montrachet Grand Cru 2002 that was perfect
Fav restaurant in sag harbor. Very charming. Excellent and extensive wine list. Some servers are better then others. Every plate is fantastic. There aren’t any mediocre items on the menu.
Excellent food! Quite pricy but worth the investment.
Perfect lunch setting
Our favorite year after year
Visited my sister in Amagansett and she suggested The American Hotel. I took her for lunch while shopping in Sag Harbor and thoroughly enjoyed everything.. Food was exceptional, service delightful…. Highly recommend.
The food was great and the location is conveniently located in downtown.
Always great and fabulous professional staff!
Dennis et al are terrific!!/outstanding
Food is always terrific! Crab cake is amazing! Steak is always delicious! Special salad was an interesting blend of sweet and salty- I really liked it! Shrimp was plump and delicious too. Wine list is amazing! Service is always very good to exceptional!
Had a lovely evening with my family at The American Hotel. Our server Joseph was super professional and had a great sense of humor. The duck pate was incredible as well as the steak au poivre.
Manager and wait staff friendly and professional!
Our service was awful; we ordered an omelet and a Diet Coke at the same time. The omelet came 15 mins later and the Diet Coke came 5 mins after that. A glass of wine took almost 30 mins to arrive.
Our food was over cooked, the crab cakes were fishy, the medium burger was rubber and looked like a hockey puck.
I usually love the American hotel, but today was not up to par.
Food was fair
Ambiance was spectacular
American Cuisine in a European like atmosphere
Good food. Nice bar (yummy Bloody Mary) beverages. Like everywhere else it seemed short staffed but the waitress was great and doing her best to get to everyone. It’s hard to choose between sitting in the garden, bar or front porch.
Our first family foray into a restaurant after the Wuhan virus hit the world, and the experience was most pleasant. This is an old-fashioned place, a throwback to sleepier social times. Diners from New York City will enjoy the cordial graciousness of the dining room and the service. The maitre'd was most obliging, seating us immediately even though we were notably early: no attempt was made to "milk" us at the bar on a pre-dinner wait. The food was correct, not cutting-edge: everything entirely in order. Perfectly fresh oysters and shrimp (in the shrimp cocktail), and perfectly cooked flounder, salmon and crab cakes after. The duck sandwich was tasty...even hearty. $100+ per head (including tips) with wine ordered by the glass. A decent place for a (mildly) special occasion.
We had lunch outdoors and my friend asked for a different table than we were given and the waitresses response for not giving us the table was that “special people” like that table. We both laughed and thought that was a ridiculous response. I found the food to be ok but the prices are outrageous. They charge $8 for an ice tea. I probably won’t be going back anytime soon.
Hi aspenchic, I'm really sorry to hear you had this experience! We try to be very democratic about the tables in our restaurant and unless a specific table has been reserved, are always happy to switch things around and accommodate. I'm not sure where the miscommunication was but it will be addressed, and I thank you for taking the time to offer feedback!
Lovely place. Made a reservation in advance and the Sat us in an adjacent room. Not the lovely dining room
A unique, historical and tradition spot with a country club feel . It is always a terrific time!
This was my 2nd time at the American Hotel. The food was delicious but their menu is VERY limited and in dire need of an update. They are very unaccommodating with food requests. The restaurant SMELLED very musty in the main dining room— the odor was so offensive we asked to be switched to another section. We were then seated in the the room with atrium ceiling, which also has a peculiar smell as well. I realize the theme of the restaurant is that it’s an old hotel and that’s the charm but the smell is unacceptable especially with the prices they charge.
Pretty old, stodgy place. Not a great ambiance. Food was okay.
I’ve been to the American Hotel but this dinner was not one of the better ones. My fathers meal came about 10 minutes after everyone else’s. He ordered the steak well done and it came out medium rare. No explanation in fact our waiter had disappeared for the entire time. Other staff just looked the other way. I poured our own wine which is not a problem but the wine bottle was not on the table. Waiter finally came back smd still did not say anything. Walking out the hostess was silent as well. I have much better service at restaurants in NYC and Atlanta. It is really a place to see and be seen.
Wonderful meal. Our server was great and the food was outstanding. Will definitely return.
Great character & history
My wife and I very much looked forward to our dinner at the American
Hotel. We ate outside in the garden and our table was quite nice.
The starters, both the little neck claims and the shrimp cocktail, were excellent. My halibut was just decent, but my wife’s duck, which I tried, was over cooked, tough, and pedestrian in terms of preparation. Our waiter, Dennis, noted that my wife was dissatisfied. He kindly provided us with two deserts at no charge. Dennis was highly professional. The service was first-rate. Nonetheless, my main course was not up to what we expected, and the duck was most disappointing. We do not plan on returning, since there are restaurants in Sag Harbor where we have had much better experiences.
