The Whale Wins Cafe and Larder offers James Beard Award winning wood-fired fare and casual counter-style service all day, 9am to 9pm. We are focusing on safely meeting the needs of our Fremont and Wallingford neighbors with expanded dine-in, carry out, espresso, grocery and bottle shop offerings.

We are taking reservations for indoor dining and will take requests for limited patio seating. Please note, our patio is heated but not covered and our dining room is chilly with the windows open. In the event of inclement weather, we will call you to confirm or modify your reservation.

    The Whale Wins is a charming little place to grab lunch with a friend. The menu is minimal, which is nice, and the food was delicious. We had the Halibut Dip with Chips, the Strata and a bowl of their French Onion Soup. I would highly recommend all three of those menu selections. Additionally, their little shop inside has plenty of eye candy to enjoy this time of year. The Whale Wins is a winner!

    Seemed a little pricy for what I ordered. The range of main courses on the menu is pretty limited. I absolutely enjoyed the small plates I ordered last time around, but main course (chicken dish) was definitely not spectacular. I'd love to see a beef option, or maybe pasta with a meat option.

    Outdoor covered heated patio dining was comfortable and appreciated! There is still a population of us who still are careful to keep safe distances from others and The Whale Wins is a favorite place of ours to dine because of this reason. The food and customer service are very good . I always recommend The Whale Wins whenever I can. They hit all the marks for me.

    We made a reservation for 2 well in advance but we ended up seated in the store. A little strange we thought. The service was good and we felt taken care of. They quizzed us about dietary restrictions (pescatarian) but then later recommended pork chops and chicken entrée. Funny. The food was really well prepared. Not really sure how the menu comes together. It felt more like ordering from a bunch of food trucks rather than a menu at a restaurant.

    We love the cassoulet at Whale Wins and made reservations as soon as we learned it was back on the menu. Service is always top notch and the ambience is lively without being too loud or buzzy. One of our favorite places in a town with lots of dining options.

    UPDATE: We received a prompt reply the next day from the restaurant apologizing for the experience and saying that the cassoulet was newly reintroduced to the menu and that they immediately reviewed the preparation with the chef. They removed the entree charge from the bill, so I think they did the right thing. The cassoulet was dry and way overcooked. It's as though the chef, if there was one the night of Halloween, took a very long break while the dish was in the oven. The coho salmon was OK. The lettuce salad was delicious, as were the desserts.

    Roasted chicken flavor was not memorable meat was not tender. Gnocchi was so salty felt like burning my mouth. Picked veg not long enough in the pickle. Roasted potatoes overly salty as well. Eggplant was quite bland, flatbread lacking in flavor and a bit tough. Overall food was disappointing.

    Love the “shared plates” concept. My friend and I shared a double pork chop that was super tender and flavorful. And there was enough left to take some home. Cucumber turnip salad delicious!

    This restaurant is the best! I loved everything about it. I enjoyed watching the chef slide pans of food in and out of the wood-burning oven. The food was original and delicious and not overdone. We started with chicken liver pate and sardines on toast and they were delicious. My entree, sable fish , was soft and rich and perfectly cooked. My spouse had a pork chop that he loved. The wine list is small and we’ll curated. One dessert, dates in olive oil, was a miss, but overall, we had a delightful and fantastic dinner at the Whale Wins. We felt like winners! The service was charming without being intrusive. Don’t miss the larder, which has items for purchase, including wines and vermouths as well as candles and packaged foods. We don’t live in Seattle but if we did, we’d be regulars.

    Cute location. Great cocktails. Service was friendly but missed requested dietary restriction modifications. Value was so - so. My halibut was maybe 2.5 oz served with a side of spring onions. Very good, but not worth $34.

    From start to finish, the meal was wonderful. The Lettuces is the best salad in Seattle. The anchovie toast is a flavor bomb. The Hama Hama clams left me wanting more. Every time we go back, we are never disappointed.
