All three floors of the restaurant have been designed keeping historical accuracy in mind making Wayfare Tavern reminiscent of a Victorian parlor and an Edwardian men's club, where anything goes from black-tie to blue jeans. Pull up a stool to the Chef's Counter at the open kitchen and look on as Chef prepares your lunch or head to the Library and Billiard Room for a game of pool. What Insiders Are Saying
Wayfare Tavern is an old-school spot in the Financial District. And we mean that in the very best way.
Fantastic fathers day late lunch/early dinner! Everyone that helped us was so wonderful and the food amazing as always!!!
One of the best dining experiences my husband and I have ever had. Our server, Brad, was very informative and friendly. The chicken, popovers and peach sorbet were so yummy! Already planning our next visit.
We arrived early for a reservation and was shown to a bar table. Started off with delicious drinks. Once seated for dinner, we were greeted with a knowledgeable server who explained everything we needed to know in detail. The popovers were warm and decadent. We had two appetizers, one the sweet corn and lobster deviled eggs—ruined picnic deviled eggs for me forever! Duck confit bone marrow was delicious. Our main entrees were the scallops and organic fried chicken. The scallops had the most sublime crust on both sides and was cooked to perfection. Served with Swiss chard bread pudding of sorts, very tasty. The organic fried chicken was crispy in all the right places and seasoned well. I spent years in the south and no one does fried chicken like a southern momma, but this was a very close second. Sadly, we had no room for dessert, but it all looked divine! All told with drinks, appetizers and entrees it was 100.00. A true bargain. Delicious! We will be back.
We caught an afternoon movie at embarcadero center then walked over for an early lunch date - loved it! We come for dinner a few times a year, but especially loved lunch! Delicious menu and lots of room to enjoy. Great weekend lunch date location , on the DL!!
Food was outstanding! Very cool restaurant.
Fabulous food! The Fried Chicken was quite possibly the best I’ve ever consumed!
A tad on the pricey side. But within range for San Fran.
The service was outstanding and extremely attentive to our needs.
Would certainly return the next time I’m in the Bay.
Service was outstanding. Food was marvelous. Best lunch I have ever eaten in San Francisco
Excellent service from Joe. Delicious dishes. A bit noisy but a fun place for sure! Great cocktails too.
Unique and outstanding food. Make this a frequent destination
The service was outstanding and the food was really good. We had a 5:45 reservation and the place was packed. My group ordered the burger, which was amazing, and the city salad with fried chicken. The fried chicken was tasty and great, the salad was just okay. We really enjoyed our dining experience.
Awesome food and atmosphere!
Partial family reunion and new job celebration. Service from Brad and support staff were excellent, food was uneven, some dishes like the bone marrow, pork chop and fried chicken were very good to outstanding but some dishes disappointed like the meager portion of the burrata/asparagus app and scallop entree left us wondering. Side dishes were uniformly excellent but slightly underwhelmed by dessert choices. Having Brian the GM visit the table several times was appreciated, always enjoy an engaging staff, shows commitment and care. Kudos to all and keep up the good work.
The hostess was wonderful, the server was great but the food was not worth the price. We went for their hamburgers which were very good but the special appetizer of the day, fried eggplant, tasted old, it was Sunday evening and it felt like it had been the special all weekend. Same for the chocolate chip sundae. The cookies were stale. It's expensive for food that I would rate over all at about a B-.
Always delicious dishes and welcoming service. Thank you.
Great lunch at Wayfare Tavern. Food was very good and service was attentive. Sat in ample booth on bottom floor which I preferred to upstairs as better noise level. Nice concierge service for boxed meals wait for you at the door.
Food was good, however we never received half our order. Server did not check in on us...so we left with only receiving half our food. We were from out of country with reservations made 1month is advance.....very disappointing
Based upon two events: One that was focused at my friend and I, and one that I witnessed, I feel that this restaurant has some racism and sexism. I will not be returning. Bias is subtle: It can be seating people who you don’t think represent your restaurant in the back, or at the worst table. It can be accosting two patrons who just sat down at a table they were told they could sit at. Getting mad at us for sitting at a table was completely out of line for the tall male manager. Having that much anger come out of a person’s face toward guests at your restaurant is completely unacceptable. We had a reservation. The table wasn’t ready yet, so we had a drink at the bar. I had been told we would sit upstairs, which is where I wanted to sit. 15 minutes later or so when the hostess came to seat us, she took us to the back, downstairs, against the wall. I said, “I was told we were going to sit upstairs.“ She said, “That one isn’t available. This is your table.” I’m kind of claustrophobic and I don’t like to be right next to the wall, and the table next to us had just gotten free, so I said “What if we sit here?” She hesitated but then said “OK, just let him clean it first.” So a guy came and cleans the table, and then we sat down, waiting for my husband who was paying the bill at the bar. Then the tall manager comes up and says really aggressively, “How can I help you ladies?” I was taken aback. We said, together, we’re actually fine. Then he started to lecture us and query us at the same time. We shouldn’t be sitting at this table, how did we get it this table? Etc. I’m thinking “Do you let people come to your restaurant to relax?” This feels like bias.
San Francisco really does need to ask itself if it wants a reputation of having a lot of jerks living here. I live in China; I live in San Diego; I’ve lived in a lot of places. And there is just an attitude in San Francisco that is not pleasant. Having been here for 14 years, I’m no longer surprised just resigned.
Good atmosphere and service right up until it got busy. We asked our waiter for “two minutes” to make the final decision on our dinner and he disappeared for 20 minutes. We ended up not ordering entrees. So for our special occasion we got a couple of drinks and an appetizer. I’m sure the food is good but we will never know.
A wonderful place for Saturday lunch! The food is excellent, the space lovely, and the service top notch. The pop-overs (served complimentary) are exceptional! Few places downtown are open for lunch on weekends and Wayfare is truly a find!
Outstanding. Great food. Great service.
Food was very good, so consistent, server was sweet guy & told us he had been there only 3 months & didn’t know that the co-owner was Mike House or that the caricatures downstairs are that of Mike & his family...oh well.
Packed. As they say, “keep coming back, it works”!
Excellent. As always.
Food was great. Good service.
Great experience from start to finish. Service was on-point and our food was excellent with good presentation. Will definitely return.
I never write reviews so this one is important for you as I am quiet yet know what I want type of person. I made my reservations for a Thursday night at 9:15 and when we got there the place was packed and they could not find my reservation. The manager took the time to look everything over and found my reservation had been made inadvertently for the next night (Friday). Rather than say she was sorry, she asked us to wait and found us a table. The food is amazing and priced well for such a delectable fare. I would highly recommend your eating here. Great find for eating there over and over again.
My new favorite SF dining! Great wine list! Fresh oysters & huge steak tartar, gorgeous lobster starter & amazing burger, delicious popovers, left no room for dessert!
Really good food and great desserts to top it off!
The pork chop was wonderful and those that got the chicken enjoyed it very much.
Great place to go with friends, Food is amazing we shared the fried chicken, Service outstanding - never felt rushed! contributed to the noise level with our laughing. Looking forward to our next trip back
The cocktails were great, food was great, and the service can't ask for better. Had a great night.
Our waiter was amazing and I appreciated the Birthday Card and well wishes from Wayfare Tavern. I did not expect to be celebrating my birthday still and it was a nice surprise.
Hosts and wait staff made us feel special.
Dinner was delicious and service was stellar. Always a great experience at Wayfare Tavern
Cozy atmosphere, decorated to represent an old style tavern. Very attentive and engaging server, who made excellent recommendations. The food was simple with a twist of elegant, and spiced perfectly. A delicious meal, wonderful atmosphere and great service. A great choice for a relaxing and wonderful meal
The service was divine and very accommodating for a pre-City Hall wedding family dinner gathering. The food was flavorful as others have said. Our table went with the mussels (extremely rich and flavorful, with a hint of spice), the famous fried chicken (perfect size and breading without the grease usually associated with fried chicken), a burger (cooked to perfection, filled with juices and topped with all the right balance of goodies), and a pasta dish (a nice blend of vegetables, creamy sauce, and pasta done al dente). The cauliflower side was amazing, not overly sweet, and at the right size. The macaroni and cheese was light, but filling. I would’ve added a bit more of a richer cheese to give it more bite and creaminess, but I appreciated the fine blend chosen. The atmosphere is loud, but has varied settings depending on floor. I’d definitely recommend Wayfare Tavern to close friends and family if seeking out a nice eating experience.
As always, the food and the service was excellent!
Drew is the most perfect server providing the optimum in service, attentive, friendly and most professional! Drew does a great job representing your restaurant . The food is fantastic and I especially like the Little Gem Salad , both the taste and presentation of the dish! The combination of great food and service makes for happy customers who are bound to return. Thank You
PS Oh, and the warm pop-overs are reason enough to return for another amazing meal!!
Lobster price much higher than on website and not very good, tough. At least 10 minutes to place order. Food came before drinks. One and done.
The service and food at Wayfare is always exceptional. The pacing of the food was excellent and the taste was spot on.
Food was delicious and there were many choices something for everyone, service was great, no complaint except for the background music was to loud.
This was my first visit to Wayfare Tavern and it was a fine place to celebrate my birthday. The service was very friendly and professional and the food was delicious. I loved the deviled eggs as an appetizer as well as the fried chicken entrée and the pop overs.
Even though the restaurant was crowded, I didn't have any difficulty speaking with or hearing my companion. I look forward to dining at Wayfare Tavern again!
