- NNasirLondon •5 reviews5.0Dined 6 days agoThoroughly enjoyed my visit to Starling Bistro and am certain that I will return. This is great value, unfussy, but very high level cooking. The kind of place you can return to over and over rather than save up to go once in a blue moon. I had booked a few extra days off after a family holiday in Nice and for the first two of them I stayed at home, on the last day my wife was heading into the office and the little one headed into nursery so I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and decided to book the great value set lunch menu. Starling had been on my list ever since it opened having followed Nick Beardshaw's journey on Great British Menu a few years ago, so I was delighted I had found an occasion to visit. I've only dined solo on business trips so this was a bit of a novelty. I was sat at the bar and the restaurant was relatively quiet. The staff were very welcoming and pleasant and the vibe immediately settled me right down. I've done chefs table seating before and as ever it was engrossing just watching these high level professionals set to work. I ordered the Pumpkin Soup, the Breaded Cod and opted to pay a £10 supplement for the Balloon Girl dessert. I also ordered the milk bread with the herb butter. The soup was delicate, walking the line marvellously between sweet and savoury. The bread was an exceptional choice to help mop up the remnants. The Breaded Cod with Warm Tartare sauce was delightful. I've had a few exceptional fish dishes in my time and often find that the sauces are the highlight of entire menus. This Tartare sauce was superb, evoking your run of the mill tartare but elevating it. Top marks. Maybe I had hyped up the Balloon Girl dessert too much, and while I thoroughly enjoyed it, it wasn't tracendent, but that's more than likely a me problem. Now I've had it I'd be happy to try the other dessert offerings here which all seems like they could be special.More infoStarling££££• British• Esher•4.7
