Le Yaca began in 1964 in Courchevel, a tiny, country village in the French Alps. Daniele Bourderau & Gerard decided it would be fun to open a small restaurant. When friends learned of their plans, they told the hopeful restaurateurs they were crazy to think people would drive eight kilometers on a winding, icy road for dinner. Daniele and Gerard hesitated for three months and then decided, “yaca le faire,” a contraction of the French phrase “il n’y a qu’a le faire,” which basically means, “let’s do it.” They called the restaurant Le Yaca as a gag, but the name caught on with customers who were amused by the pun and contributed to the restaurant’s lore by inventing “yaca-isms” of their own: yaca y aller (let’s go). Daniele came to the United States and opened Le Yaca in Williamsburg. Daniel Abid bought Le Yaca in 2001. Daniel worked and trained in such prestigious places as “Le Pre Catelan” and “Lenotre” in Paris; “L’Amandier” and “Roger Verge," and to top it all off, “Alain Ducass

We dined at Ember for my birthday and our server was Eddie. He had a welcoming energy and gave helpful recommendations. The entire experience was excellent. The dining room was dimly lit and had a romantic atmosphere. We started with the Tuna Crispy Rice and Surf and Turf roll. The tuna was a 10/10 and we will return for it. The Surf and Turf was an 8/10 but pales in comparison to the crispy rice. My husband ordered the GOCHUJANG BOLOGNESE which was okay but skippable 6/10. Not much in the way of flavor but great if you just want a plate of gnocchi. I ordered the EMBER MISO BLACK COD 9/10. The cod was cooked perfectly and I loved the balance of the acidity from the kimchi. Next time we’ll try the steak and scallops & risotto. For desert we ordered the Yuzu crème brulee and also received a free birthday slice of Oreo cheesecake. The crème brulee was a 10/10. The yuzu topping gave it a nice acidic crunch to balance the vanilla custard. The portion size was huge so definitely enough to share. The Oreo cheesecake was skippable unless you’re an Oreo or huge chocolate fan. The food came out quickly and was hot when served. We were there for almost exactly an hour starting at an 8:45 pm reservation. It also wasn’t too busy for a Thursday night but the dining room was mostly full when we arrived. We will definitely return.

From the moment we checked in at the front desk, we were very well treated including a quiet table and placed with our preferred server. We have been to La Yaca many times over the past 15 years and will continue to return. First rate restaurant.

Very cool dinner experience. While we were eating, a musician came by and played a couple of songs on period instruments. The food was different, being from the colonial times, but was very good.

The food was marvelous (I ordered the Scallops over Fennel; my wife went with Butternut Squash soup as an opener (fantastic), and the Braised Short Rib for her meal). The service was superb, and the setting (Williamsburg, in the midst of William & Mary and the Colonial Historic District) is fantastic. We loved Fat Canary; highly recommended!
